LAUREL MD DISTRICT

MANY THANKS FROM LAUREL PARK, CANTER, AND F.O.P.-C.O.P.S. TO THE International chili society and the

VERY BEST Ever CHIEF JUDGE, FRED BELL

and TO THE GREATEST & "FUNNEST" CHILI COOKS ON THE EAST COAST

.

Thank you all for helping to make the 1st annual Laurel Park District Chili Cookoff a huge success (despite the challenging weather conditions.) Our celebrity judge, Ed Norris, enjoyed his first time chili judging experience, and even stayed to present the trophies to the winning cooks!

.

The Maryland Jockey Club donated $2,000 to the named charities ($1,000 each) but I thought you would like to know that just the People's Choice category raised $480! Not bad for a new event in cold, wet weather. Thank you participating cooks for being so generous with your delicious chilis.

.

CANTER not only benefited from the monies raised, but they also deserve a warm round of applause and many thanks for providing 8 volunteers to help the day run smoothly.

.

The Ed Norris Poker Run Motorcycle Ride was affected by the weather but some brave riders did make the run, and they stayed to enjoy the chili events, and to listen to a great band, Maynard's Flipside.

.

We had a lot of fun, but I have made lots of notes for improvements next year. Most importantly though, we'd like to hear from you with comments and suggestions on how to make the event bigger and better. Please e-mail or call me, whichever is more convenient, and we all look forward to seeing you next year.

.

Wishing you all the best for more great chili cooking, PhoebeJ

Main Street Heat Chili Cookoff

This was the 5th year of the Main Street Heat Chili Cookoff in Mount Airy, MD. Friday's rain had a promise of a sunny day on Saturday. It was sunny, alright, but VERY windy. The new venue would have been great on a windless day, as the cooks were all set up in the parking lot. But before 8 am, most cooks were ready to call it a day because they couldn't hold down their Health Department required tents. So Ellie and Barbara, the chairs for the event, made an executive decision and had the cooks bring their stuff inside the very large room, originally dedicated to judging. It was some fast moving folks that got all the tables arranged and the cooks were ready to go by 9:15. The room was large enough to have plenty of room for the spectators to walk around and have a whole section for the judging. Of course, by the time the Fire department got there, they were not happy and threatened to shut it down. We had 1 hour and 15 minutes to red turn in. Ellie asked the Fire Department to just "Think about it and come back to us with an answer in 90 minutes". Well, they were kind and sat with the fire extinguishers out until the 2 pm turn in. All was well then.

.

We had a large turn out for the cookoff, both in cooks and spectators. And some very happy winners. We had cooks from all over, as well as Diane Lentz and Al Henry helping in the judging area. Our thanks to all those at the Main Street Heat for putting on a great show and we hope to see even more folks there next year. It is a great venue.

AVI BACK 2 BACKS

Don't forget about the Back-to-Back Regionals coming up this weekend at the Avi Casino in Laughlin, Nevada. We will once again be setting up "behind the buffet" (the wind-protected area). Weather predictions are for high's in the high 70's or low 80's with possible scattered rain on Saturday and LOTS of sun on Easter Sunday, so be prepared for anything.

.

Please don't forget about People's Choice -- it was missing from the flyer and website, but we really need your participation. If you can't participate in PC on Saturday, save your left-overs from Saturday and pitch in on Sunday. As usual, the 1st place People's Choice cook wins HALF of the People's Choice proceeds! So bring a spare pot, stove, and some beans and go for the gold! Starting this Thanksgiving, all of the ICS Avi cook-offs will require People's Choice in addition to entry fees.

.

There will be Bloody Mary's and Screwdrivers available at the People's Choice Booth on Saturday morning (and hopefully Sunday, too), for those who want to kick-start their day.
