MonteCarlo NFR

.

It was cold in Vegas and Monte Carlo's first cookoff. I have to say they had everything on the Checklist and were there to support whenever we had needs. They had a MGM/Mirage corporate challenge and about a dozen new ICS members entering different competitions. How often do you see 2 tables of Red at a first time cookoff? So we had a great venue with amazing support. Thank you to the Monte Carlo, Danielle, Sarah and all their staff!

.

Fred Wieland Chaired; Jim Maehl Chief Judged; Scorekeepers were Donnie Gordon, Leah Wieland, Louise Dinneweth, Nicole Cami, Bobbie Gaul, Willma Maehl, Kathy Plager and Patti Summers; Bob Dinneweth wrangled the tables; Mike Austin Emceed; and Carol and Dave Hancock showed up for extra support. It was a great time to visit with long unseen friends (Kate brought her husband, John, out for his first cookoff and Jim Lamb came out of hiding). We may never have Circus Circus for our annual Christmas gathering, but we had Rodeo Contestants and NASCAR worthies and lots of friends joining us for our first December gathering in Vegas in many years.

NORM GAUL QUESTION

This year in May, Ed & Mary Pierczynski had their last cookoff at their home. One of the many pictures taken was a group picture of all the ICS World's Champions. I forgot my camera, so I didn't get that picture. If anyone has a copy of that group could you send me a copy of it or if you have it on your computer could you email it to me. Thanks in advance if you could help.

AVI BACK 2 BACK REGIONAL'S

It was a beautiful weekend. We had put Andy Dishong, Jeep Gereghty and Harry Robinson in charge of the weather. They even held off the rain until just about everyone had broken down and left the site before it hit! Susie Baumberger put together another great weekend for the cooks. Ron Burt was everywhere doing everything. Tootie Gray handled the People's Choice and morning libations for the charity (I forgot to write down the $ but it is being matched by the Bill Gates Foundation so we doubled out buck for Children's Literacy). Jim Maehl did his usual Chief Judge wonders. Scorekeepers were: Donnie Gordon, Louise Dinneweth, Val Gereghty, Bob Dinneweth, Susie Baumberger and Willma Maehl. Ron Burt and Sharue Johnson wrangled until we required them to Judge Red on Sunday and of course Capt Jim had to make a comment about Donnie & Louise "spoon jockeying". If we can shuck spoons at world we can jockey them just as easily (and it's not the first time for either of us).

Monte Carlo NFR Regional,

December 5th

.

For those of you who heard about our "Health Department Challenge", it was Much Ado About Nothing". It's the same Health Department, Rules and Inspectors that we had at the Tropicana. There are no problems. The Special Events Coordinator for Monte Carlo thought they wanted the names of all the cooks, when what they wanted was People's Choice cooks. However, I like having all the online registrations... It makes planning so much easier.

.

The site has been moved to pool side! Danielle just sent directions. Capt Jim & Willma's motor home will be parked in that area and the judging tent will be up for registration, so you can't miss it:

From Las Vegas Blvd.,

Go West on Rue de Monte Carlo (Road between Monte Carlo and NYNY)

Take a right (north) between the parking garage and The hotel

Take your second right after the stop sign

.

From the Hotel elevators

Go through the hotel lobby towards the escalators

GO through glass doors

.

The pool area is enclosed, so setting up Friday (after 3p) should be OK. There will be flat bed carts to take your stuff inside the pool area, after which you will need to move your vehicle into one of the parking areas. There is plenty of parking in the same area as the "Cowboy's Trucks & Trailers" for oversized vehicles and anyone else who wants to park there.

.

Randy Travis will not able to judge because he arrives at 10 p.m., we will have NFR riders walking around tasting chili and taking pictures. That was a surprise we were hoping to toss in. However, he will be performing Sunday in case any of you are staying over.

.

Red Chili – Entry Fee $35.00 – Cook 12N-3P

1st Place - $1000 Cash, 2 nites, 2 show tickets, Dinner for 2 at Brand Steakhouse & Plaque

RIVER RESORTS REGIONAL

.

The 23rd Annual Lost Lake Cookoff (aka River Resorts Regional) is in the history books. The saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" really applies to this event. So many of the same folks attend year after year that you could almost call it a cult thing.

.

We arrived on Thursday afternoon to find that we had been preceded by Bob & Ellen Dyer, Ron & Maggie Harris, Jim & Wilma Maehl, Karl & Virginia Smith and Richard & Marty Leitner. We were again privileged to be able to rent a lovely double-wide mobile home very close to the cookoff site, which we shared this year with Steve Wolf, Jim Stoddard and Russ & Judy Barnes. Several more of the chili participants arrived with their trailers and RVs Thursday evening and all day Friday.

.

Friday is dedicated to preparing for the breakfast that we serve to cooks, judges and groupies on Saturday morning. It is quite a challenge to cook bacon, sausage, potatoes, eggs and biscuits & gravy out of doors and serve it hot to about 75 hungry Chiliheads. There was a bit of a delay in getting the preparation started due to what was at first believed to be a faulty propane grill but which turned out to be an "operator problem"---something to do with when to turn on the propane valves to the tank and to the burners. After the problem was solved, all went smoothly. Everything but the eggs was precooked and packaged up to be reheated in the morning.

.

While the men were cooking the gals were also busy, making a mixed fruit salad to be served with the breakfast (with or without champagne). Then they put together 500 tasting kits for sale on Saturday to the public chili tasters.

.

Before the breakfast is served at 8:00 am those who care to imbibe are treated to bloody Mary's, mimosas or screwdrivers by Armando Sanchez. There is also a large pot of coffee brewed and waiting for those who prefer it. Then on to the serious business of competing for chili, chili verde and salsa. Throughout the day Steve Porter oversees the contests for Junior Miss Chili Pepper, Miss Chili Pepper, Junior Mr. Hot Sauce, Mr. Hot Sauce and Shoot 'n' Holler. The crowd of River folks enjoys all of it, including the chili tasting. People's Choice Chili is optional here. Most of the cooks bring some, if only to allow them to interact with the public, who tend to be a young, fun-loving bunch of folks. Steve Porter remarked that, after 23 years, the guys and gals who used to compete in the Junior contests are now competing in Miss Chili Pepper and Mr. Hot Sauce and entering their own children in the Junior contests.

.

Bob Dinnewith officiated as Chief Judge with Donnie Gordon as the Chief Scorekeeper, assisted this year by Louise Dinnewith, Sharon Ayers and Mary Lou Corrao. Jim & Wilma Maehl and Dennis Macklin helped out where ever they were needed. Allene Macklin lent her efforts to helping with the sale of tasting kits. After a long, warm, lovely day at the Colorado River the winners were finally determined, and they were:

.

Best First-Time Cook: Joe Cole

.

Salsa (15 entries):

3rd, Russell Barnes, CA

2nd, Jim Stoddard, TX

1st, Barbara Ward, CA

.

Chili Verde (12 entries):

3rd, Russell Barnes, CA

2nd, Patricia Sanchez, CA

1st, Barbara Ward, CA

.

People's Choice Chili:

The way this works at Lost Lake is that the proceeds from the sale of the tasting kits is split equally between the winning cook and the charity. This year we took in $966.00 from the sale of tasting kits. For about the last hour of the day, there was a tie for first place which was finally broken by one vote. The results were:

2nd, Lisa Miller, a new competitor who cooked and served chili verde

1st, Tony Inglese, winning $483.00 and successfully defending his title from last year.

.

Traditional Red Chili (26 entries):

5th, Dave Thomas, CA

4th, Charlie Ward, CA

3rd, Mike Austin, CA (who has won this cookoff three times)

2nd, Kathy Plager, CO

1st, Bob Plager, CO

.

This was the first time for Russell Barnes and the Plagers to compete at Lost Lake. We think they may come back!

River Resorts Regional

Hello Chili Cooks,

.

Saturday, October 21st is the date for the 23rd Annual River Resorts Regional Chili Cookoff at Lost Lake Resort. At this point we don't have a lot of entries, but we know that some of you wait until the last minute to make up your minds, so we're optimistic that we will have our usual successful event.

If you're thinking about cooking chili verde at Lost Lake, this might be an added incentive for you. Today we received an Express Mail package from Jeff Ray. Inside the package was a beautiful set of professional knives. Each knife has its own protective knife guard, and the set fits into a compact carrying case. This set of quality knives is valued at about $400. Jeff said to use it at the cookoff as we see fit. So, feeling that the chili verde cooks are sometimes lighted when it comes to prize money and goodies, we have decided to this set of quality knives to the winning chili verde cook, of course along with the usual split of the eentry fees. We will award this prize only if we have a full complement of seven chili verde cooks.

.

We are looking forward to seeing you on Saturday at the River Resorts Regional Chili Cookoff. Please remember to bring your optional People's Choice chili. Tony Inglese, last year's winner, will be there to defend his title. And he hopes that this year will bring him even more that then $599 that he won last year.

Lost & Found

.

I found a banner in the cook's loading area by the motor home at the WCCC. I tossed it in the motor home when nobody claimed it and forgot about it (easy for me to do). The name of the chili is Haunted Chili as in haunted house or ghost. I was wondering if you had a chili cook registered under that name. And if so an address or e-mail address for them. I should have got around to it before Halloween, more appropriate.

HARVEST FAIR REGIONAL RESULTS

by Kathy & Mike Stewart

An autumn day in Southern California can be great for cooking chili. Sunday was warm, calm and clear and the public made a good showing at the Harvest Fair event in San Bernardino. The cook-off is part of a 4-day event highlighting the western heritage of the United States. People camp out at the site all week-end long, living as they did back in the late 1800's. It is considered by western aficionados as one of the best western reenactments in the country. Chairman Ken Joswiak puts in a lot of hard work for this event. Alas, his hard work apparantly does not include unlocking the door for the judging area until 9:30, but we managed.
.
This year we had 21 teams cooking red chili, 9 cooking chili verde and 7 preparing salsa. We were also graced by a large contingent of past World's Champions, Salsa: Dione Cooley, Barry Steinberg, Barbara Ward and Bonnie Ford-- Chili Verde: Karen Ray, Kathy Stewart and Bob Dyer - Red Chili: Bill Ray and Ron Burt. And because this cook-off was a regional, we may have had the 2010 World's Champion in our midst.
.
My thanks go out to my wife, Kathy as Head Scorekeeper and her assistant Sheila Gordon, to all of the judges that came out to help us and to all of the cooks that participated.
.
And the Winners are:
.
People's Choice - Russell Barnes
.

3rd - Skip Cooley
2nd - Patricia Sanchez

.
Verde
3rd - Tish Crawford

Terlingua, ICS Hill, food, chili, friends and charity

.
Greetings from you star reporter, Jim Stoddard. Just got back from "the bowels of Texas" (Terlingua), and wanted to give you all a wrap up of the Tolbert side festivities. Look for the video soon...

.

Attendance on "ICS Hill" (known, as such, because all our ICS cooks cook there) was down this year. We sorely missed Bob and Kathy Plager and Al Henry! This year ICS attendees , beside me, included Bruce Jones, Sue Schools (had to remotely park), Bob Hall, Mick Joplin and newbies Bob and Gail Kyle. Weather was fantastic. Friday was bean, black-eyed pea, rib/chicken/brisket smoking day. Truett Airhart got 7th place in ribs and final table brisket, and I got on finals table, as well, with my beef brisket. Both of us were ecstatic, as this was the 4th or 5th time smoking brisket and had never gotten a place or final table.

.

The charities; ALS Association (Lou Gehrig's disease), Big Bend Education Association, and the Terlingua Paramedics.

.

Food? Of course! Non-stop. Thanks to Truett Airhart, Joey Sutphen and his crew. Large breakfasts Friday and Saturday of scrambled eggs, biscuits out of the smoker, homemade brown gravy and fried pork tenders, jalapeno cheese grits, bacon, ham, fried pies.....need I go on? But wait! There's more! Lunch...dinner....smoked beef brisket and ribs, beans, blackeyed peas, ham, tamales, chili....and then much experimentation with fried foods.....Ohhhhhhhh....

.

Then came Saturday. Red chili day. ICS Hill congregated in front of the Turners Goat Gap Gazette motorhome, as tradition dictates. ICS Hill has never been skunked out of a chili trophy ever since its inception, but it looked like this year, it could be the case. After calling third place, we all reverted to blank stares. But wait....who is that running up to receive 2nd place? BRUCE JONES!!!!

.

Then the wait for the final number to be called. The anticipation, the agony, the hope... "5970514"! It sounded so familiar. I had looked at it a thousand times, but now it looked surreal. I waited, holding my excitement. I didn't want to be wrong. Again, they called, "5970514! Who has it!!!" It WAS me! What a feeling!

.

Good time was had by all. Kathleen Tolbert Ryan puts on a great family friendly cookoff; laid back, relaxed and a great time to chill. We all invite you to ICS Hill next year, and if we can talk Clif Dugan back, we will have three Tolbert Champion flags flying high! I'm serious. Make plans to join us next year! You won't go home hungry!

.

One last thing. We saw many cooks visiting from the CASI side. The feeling is so mutual at the cook's level. We all enjoy cooking chili, visiting with friends, and helping our charities. You chili officers and "old chiliheads" out there who have problems with your members cooking in other organizations? Back off and stop harassing them. They are having fun and will still keep cooking for you. Leave them alone or they won't come back... The past is the past. "Nough said. God bless. See ya down the trail. Your star reporter signing off.

This was a great chili article in American Way Magazine on board our aircraft.

.

P.S. From Bob & Kathy Plager: We are so happy for Jim Stoddard winning the 43rd Annual Original Terlingua International Championship. He is a true Champion now, and we are so proud of him. We just wish we could have been there to help him celebrate his "Big Win".
