I hope everyone is doing well and in the mood to cook some chili!! We are hosting the Back to Back AZ Copperstate Regional and AZ Valley of the Sun Regional cookoffs again this year on March 13th and 14th in our lovely Ahwatukee Park. We will again have security on site Saturday night so cooks can leave their tents and belongings instead of packing it all up and setting up again. What a deal!!! Entry fees are $35 for Red, $30 for Green, and $15 for Salsa. In addition, 1 gallon of People's Choice is required, which we will be checking folks. If you need tables, chairs or canopies they are available for rent. A table plus 2 chairs is $10 and a canopy is $15 for a two-day rental.

.

As far as lodging, I just spoke with a representative from Extended Stay America (1.22 miles from our location) and she gave us a great, great, deal especially during this peak season. This is a 1 bedroom queen suite with a kitchen with refrigerator for only $64.99 per night. The same suite is also available with two double beds for $74.99. This is a terrific deal. It is a nice, clean hotel and very close to our facility. To get this deal you need to book before February 19 and tell the booking agent that you are with the International Chili Society. She has blocked off 20 rooms as of today. Their address is 14245 S. 50th St., Phoenix, AZ 85044 and phone number is 480-785-0464. SILVER STATE REGIONAL CHILI COOKOFF

Lake Las Vegas NV

.

Saturday, February 13 we will be having a another cookoff in beautiful Lake Las Vegas. The cooks will be cooking in the same area as last time circling the fountain with a great view of Lake Las Vegas. Once again it looks like the weatherman is going to cooperate with us. Looking for temperature to be 60 to 65f no rain in the forecast (perfect chili cooking weather). We will be cooking all three categories plus people choice. If you would like a quick trip to Europe this is the cookoff to attend and you don't even need your passport. They have been giving this cookoff lots of media play so we expect large crowds. So a quick trip to Europe may earn you a trip to the World's Championship Chili Cookoff.

.

Directions to Silver State Regional

.

Follow every direction once you turn onto Lake Las Vegas Pkwy:

When you get to the round-about on Lake Las Vegas Blvd go 1/2 way around so that you are still going straight ahead. At the first stop sign you will see the sign for Casino Montelago, follow the sign (turn right) and go all the way to the parking lot (on left) at the end of the road. The dirt lot behind the employee parking is reserved for cooks. Capt Jim or Dirty Ole Phil should be around to get you to your cooking spot from there. You can drive in and unload, but must take your vehicle back to the parking lot for the day.

.

From North: Traveling South on I-15 turn onto Ramp (Exit 42) towards US-95/US-93/I-15/Martin L King Blvd/Reno/Phoenix/Downtown LV. FRIDAY - Feb. 5, 2010

Willma Maehl

.

Willma had her surgery on Tuesday afternoon, it lasted almost 7 hours. Her doctor is very pleased with the outcome of the surgery he said everything went very well. Her recovery seems to be going very well and she has already got up and walked just a very little which is a good sign. Still in a lot of pain which is understandable for the extent of the surgery. She is in Valley Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada which seems to be a very good facility with a dedicated staff.

.

Thank you all for your concern and prayers they are really appreciated. We are lucky to have so many good chili friends, you guys are the best!

2nd Annual Breckenridge, CO Chili Chilly District

a Great Success

By Steve Tomasek

.

The 2nd Annual ICS Chili Chilly was a huge success via large crowd and a 50% increase in the number of ICS entries vs last year. This indoor event saw cooks travel from CT and UT to join over a dozen Colorado cooks to heat up the ski town for the second year. Again, the Rotary Club folks hooked up with HJ Doug Sovern and SK Donna Sovern to run a very smooth cookoff. Everything was right on time, all tables, chairs, and even table cloths were provided.

.

The winners for Red & Verde received a nice cash prize, trophies, and a two night Resort Quest return stay!

All others received cash and trophies.

.

Here's the results:

Red:

1st: Mick Weiss;

2nd, Erika Knutson;

3rd, Bonnie Tomasek

.

Verde:

1st, and qualifying for World's, Erika Knutson;

2nd George Trujillo;

3rd, Mike Rook

.

Salsa:

1st and qualifying for World's, Kathy Weiss;

2nd, Steve "Deuce" Tomasek;

3rd, first timer, Doug Swartz.

.

Plans are being made for next year's cookoff!

There is a Ramada in Key Largo which is about twelve miles from the cookoff.

When I used this to find out price it was $95 per night. AAA rate would have

"Hap" Gilbert (Mayor of Forsyth) once again pulled off another very successful chili cookoff.

The cookoff was held in the rotunda area of the beautiful Hickory Point Mall in Forsyth.

.

There were 51 ICS contestants and 34 Celebrity Crockpot contestants stirring their wares and handing out samples to the public for donations to the two charities of choice.

It is to soon to tabulate, but, it is believed that we surpassed last years charity donations of more than $7,000 to the Catholic Charities and the Salvation Army.

.

After the awards of the very,very happy winners, most made their way to the Homewood Suites just behind the Mall were all enjoyed a free buffet banquet of pulled pork, Buffalo wings, salads, etc. including free adult beverages as well as a lot of camaraderie and laughs.

All this provided by Ray's Chilli Products, Buffalo Wild Wings, and the Homewood Suites.

.

Special thanks need to be given to "Hap", Kathy, Jay, Rex, Kassie, Doug, and Kim for all there efforts to help raise money for charity and produce one of the best cookoffs around.

FLORIDA KEYS BACK-TO-BACK COOKOFFS ARE ON!

.

Hi Everybody,

.

A quick heads-up for everyone's advance planning purposes.

In response to popular request – more like "popular clamoring" judging from the inputs in Charleston at the 2009 World – the cookoffs in the Florida Keys are back. The dates are set; ICS paperwork is in process.

.

There will be two qualifiersFlorida State and Chili in the Keys Regional. The dates are March 13th & 14th, not sure which one on what day.

.

The location is Founders' Park in the Islamorada area. That is right around Mile Marker 87, or roughly 20 miles down from the last cookoffs in the Keys at Key Largo.

If you go to http://maps.google.com and enter "Founders' Park, Islamorada Florida", it will take you to a business - Founders Park Watersports, which is in the park. However, it will also give you a very a very nice satellite view of the very beautiful park; it also shows the Overseas Highway (US-1).

.

The cookoffs have returned thanks the efforts of Dennis Ward (the State Attorney for the 16th Judicial District Florida – The Florida Keys) who has been leading the effort; added to that list is Carol Hancock, Doug Roy and many others. Already onboard as a sponsor is the Moose Lodge…and everybody there is busy scratching for additional sponsors - not an easy task these days, especially in the Keys which are among the hardest hit areas in South Florida by this economy.

.

These will essentially be "first cookoffs" for this group; but I can tell you that they are hard at work, and I have no doubt they will make them a success in the tradition of previous cookoffs in the Keys. I encourage everyone who can, to please step up and come support the events.

.

As a matter of fact, if you're fed up with the "global warming" the country has experienced this winter, this makes for a great opportunity to get away and thaw in the Florida sun. Plus, you can even make it an 8 day three-fer qualifiers: St George Island Cookoff up in the Florida Panhandle the Saturday before; a leisurely trip down the state with all the attractions, and wind up in the wonderful Florida Keys…with two more shots at the World.

.

By the way, the Islamorada area - Tavernier down to Islamorada - is our (Marshall and my) favorite section of the Keys. Very "Keys", yet with lots of fun stuff to do.

.

As soon as the cookoffs are up on the ICS website, or any new information emerges, I'll put out another posting on Dick's Chili World.

.

Looking forward to seeing a whole bunch of you there,

.

Sergei Kowalchik

WEDNESDAY - Jan. 13, 2009

Jim Miller

I just got home and I spoke to Sandy Miller and she gave me this information

re: Jim's services.

Calling hours for Jim Miller are from 4-6 p.m. on Thursday January 14th at Wilson's Funeral home in Lake Ariel, PA. (Google for address) Sandy had requested that anyone that attends brings a Hawaiin shirt as Jimmy loved them.

A small reception will be held after viewing hours at Jim's favorite place, The Backdraft Restauant not too far away.
