WESTERN REGIONAL CHILI COOKOFF
--AUG. 1, 2009

This cookoff is only two weeks away. There is still time
for you to register to cook. You can go on line to register, or
mail me your application with a check to still qualify for
the STAINLESS STEEL MEASURING SPOON SET, or call me
at 909-3224510. I need to hear from you soon so that I
have time to mail you back your parking pass.
Hoping to see you at the races!!!!!!!!!!!

Chairman, Western Regional Chairman

Canada's Capital Regional Chili Cookoff
.
August 22 is the date for the first ever ICS cookoff in Ottawa, Ontario. It will feature Red, Verde and Salsa. Please also note that City Health regulations require that salsa be prepared on site. Herb and Spice Shop  will be providing a variety of produce for our very special Cast Iron Chef Salsa competition but be sure to bring your special secret ingredients. e-mail me: chilidog@windsor.igs.net for more information.
It'll be a part of the SuperEx, a State Fair type of agricultural fair. There will be a load of things to do beside cook chili. It's a good one to bring the kids to.
Ottawa is the kind of place where you might want to take an extended weekend. There are some pretty good room prices to be found on Hotwire or Priceline. The downtown ones are pretty close to the SuperEx.
You'll be able to park right outside the building...easy in & out. The cookoff is indoors and the Fire Department is saying no to propane stoves. We are still trying to get them to relent on that. For now, you have to use your naphtha gas units. There is a form you need to submit to the Health Department. It's already filled except for your own information. Go HERE, then send it HERE. The rest of the cook information is here.
 .
You'll need a passport to get back into the U.S.
 .
This a brand new cookoff. The people in Ottawa are enthusiastic about your attendance. Their hope (and mine) is that this would grow into a doubleheader.
.
Thanks,
Richard Chauvin

TUESDAY - July 14, 2009

MOUNTAIN STATE DISTRICT
Firecracker Chili Cookoff
The Firecracker Chili Cookoff that took place, July 4 at the Mountain State Art and Craft Fair in Ripley, West Virginia:   Kevin Simmons of Milton, WV took home two trophies and $400 in prize money after judges selected him first in two categories in the Mountain State Art and Craft Fair (MSACF) "Firecracker" Chili Cookoff, held July 4 at Cedar Lakes near Ripley. Simmons grab top honors in the Red chili and Salsa divisions, while his wife Tonya, brought home the top prize in the Verde category.
"All the entries were very good and I understand the judging was very close," said Deputy Commissioner of Agriculture Janet Fisher, who presented the awards to the contestants. "This is a young event, but it's growing and attracting some really strong entrants."
Event organizer Cindy Martel echoed Fisher.
"We had multiple entries in six categories and 18 entrants overall, which is a substantial increase from last year's inaugural event," said Martel. "Winners in the verde and salsa category have automatically qualified for the world championship contest to be held in Charleston in October. This will be the first time those contests have been held east of the Mississippi River."
Sponsors for the contest were the West Virginia Department of Agriculture, MSACF, Cedar Lakes, Cracker Barrel of Mineral Wells and ACE Adventure Resort.

Back 2 Back Regionals in Chicago
Chicago once again will play host to two World Championship qualifiers in August.  On Sat. August 1 the 15th annual Windy City Regional will take place.  That will be followed by the Northern Illinois Regional on Sun. August 2.  Both cookoffs will have red, verde, and salsa competitions in which the winners will move to the World Championship in W.Virginia. There will also be a CASI cookoff on Sunday for those cooks that compete in that organization.
The cookoffs are part of the Retro on Roscoe street festival which was featured in 2007 by Rachel Ray on her program.  Music, classic cars, great food, and a charming residential urban neighborhood make this festival a favorite of cooks every year.
To make the cookoff even more "cook friendly"  competitors will be able to park in a remote parking lot and have their equipment and themselves shuttled to the cookoff and back.  This should ease the burden some cooks have of finding suitable parking in the city.  See the ICS website for exact locations.
We have a throng of hungry tasters that never seem to get enough chili so you will need to make or bring 1 gal of chili per cook.  Our judges recognize good chili as was evidenced by their selection of Georgia Weller as Chicago's representative last year in the World Championship. Thank you Georgia for bringing the title back to Illinois.  This year it could be you!!

IDAHO STATE CHAMPIONSHIP CHILI COOKOFF
Friday, July 10, 2009
 .
Eight teams in Nampa's Hot Chili Nights competition descended on downtown Friday night to bring a little spice to the start of Snake River Dayz.
 .
Bragging rights, cash prizes and a chance to compete in the International Chili Society's World Championship Chili Cookoff which will be held on October 11, 2009 in Charleston, WV, were all on the line for the cooks who tantalized visitors' taste buds for a $3 fee. The chili competition put recipes from Caldwell and Nampa and all the way to Hawaii to the test.
 .
"What20can I say: Rodeo and chili go together," event co-chair Jonette Flores, with the Nampa Lions Club, said.
 .
The event, in its eighth year, benefits the Lions Club's vision fund and its youth leadership groups. It's only the second year Hot Chili Nights has run in conjunction with Snake River Dayz, and the first year it's jointly known as the Idaho State Championship Chili Cookoff.
 .
The chili cookoff took place along with a variety of other events Friday in downtown Nampa for Snake River Dayz, including music and kids' activities. Snake River Dayz continues today with a breakfast, concert and outdoor movie presentation.
 .
In a typical year, the cookoff raises about $3,300. Nine judges ranging from local legislators, law enforcement personnel, business owners, Chief Judge Andrew Pena, and ICS representative Charlie Ward choose the winners.
Tallying the votes was Scorekeeper Barbara Ward. Spectators choose the People's Choice recipient.
 .
"Everyone loves it, and it's growing every year," Flores said. "Everyone is just down here having fun and you don't need to be an expert to be one of our teams."
 .
Last year's winners, Alicia and David Garcia with Garcia's Tex-Mex Grill in Caldwell, returned with hopes to represent Idaho at the world championships.
"I think chili, you have to be neutral with it, so everyone can taste it, all the way from the little ones to the older people," Alicia said. "So we try not to have it too spicy."
 .
Bill Forsyth, whose son lives in Boise, brought his "Not Forgotten" chili from Kapolei, Hawaii, to help represent the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC). "It's got a little bit of heat to it with a little backburn from a habanero we throw in there," he said. "It's just a lot of fun and meeting nice people. I don't care if we win or lose, it's just for fun and telling our story of JPAC.". "They're all a little different but they're all good."
 .

 .
Old Miners Days runs for about a month in Big Bear.  Our weekend of it starts with the Calcutta on20Friday night.  It's dinner and then auctioning off the pre-registered cooks.  Mike Austin & Mark Sweeney take the microphones for the auction and Mark Gains takes the money. The proceeds of the auction are split 1/2 for the Local Cooks and 1/2 for the Best Overall Cook, each amount is then split into thirds: 1/3 for the cook, 1/3 for the buyer and 1/3 for the charity.  It's a great deal for everyone and the sunset over the Lake was absolutely beautiful!
 .
Things were a little slow coming together in the judging area so thank you to Karen Ray and Dennis Macklin for numbering the booths, so Val & I could stay and finish putting things together.  Mark Sweeney did a great job as Chief Judge; Scorekeepers: Val Gereghty, Donnie Gordon, Melody Sweeney and Jim Scofield; Wranglers: Bob Witt, Amanda Izen & Kellie Sweeney and of course, keeping it going all day was Emcee Mike Austin.
