Mountain's District Chili Cookoff
by Karen Ray
The lovely community of Lake Arrowhead, CA hosted its second cookoff today to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of the Mountain Communities. Although a little difficult to access, the venue is very nice, being adjacent to the classy and varied shops of Lake Arrowhead Village. There was an impressive turnout of public anxious to sample the chili prepared by the cooks. The turnout of cooks was a little disappointing but understandable. This close to the World's Championship, a District cookoff is a difficult event, at least here in Southern California.
.
The temperature was close to 80, and an occasional breeze kept things comfortable for cooks and judges alike. A good mix of local and regular judges sampled the salsa, chili verde and traditional red chili and selected good winners to advance to the next levels of competition. Chief Judge, Steve Wright, was assisted by his lovely wife, Aggie. Karen Ray, as Chief Scorekeeper, was capably helped by her lovely assistant, Bill. Emcee was Mike "Ughlee" Austin, who handled the contests (Little Miss Chili Pepper, Little Mr. Hot Sauce and Bubblegum Blowing for both children and adults) with good humor. It was nice to see a cookoff with so much emphasis on family participation.
.
Plans are to try to move this event to an earlier time next year to make the District competition more appealing to the cooks. The date most often mentioned was July 12th, which was an open weekend this year. Thanks to all who supported this cookoff. The Boys and Girls Club greatly appreciate your help.
.
And the winners were:
.
Salsa (9 contestants):
3rd, Nibs Waters
2nd, Sheila Beller
1st, Claudia Wheat
.
Chili Verde (7 contestants):
3rd, Judy Barnes
2nd, Chris Nicoll
1st, Mary Nicoll
With Mary's father, Nibs, already qualified for Chili Verde, the whole Waters clan will be competing for chili verde at the World's Championship!
.
Best Booth:
This was a "spirit" award as well as a decoration award. It was judged by the Boys and Girls Club volunteers who were helping out at the cookoff. The prize of $100 and a plaque was given to the team judged to be having the most active participation and the most fun, as well as a nicely decorated cooking area. It was very deservedly awarded to Russell and Judy Barnes, Sancho Blanco Chili, who always enhance a cookoff with their presence.
.
Best First-Time Cook: Janet Welch, whose all-girl team gained the most votes among the first-time cooks. We hope we'll see Janet at some future events.
.
Traditional Red Chili (11 entries):
.
5th, Gene Wheat
4th, Irene Menchaca
3rd, Mike Stewart (see ya at Mentone, Mike)
2nd, Sheila Beller
1st, Red Brecke, after a dry spell of nearly two years!
.
Congratulations to all. See ya down the chili trail.

Tony Dalbis

by Ben Hunt

Long time chili judge, Tony Dalbis, is facing removal of his left kidney on 8-31. He has a malignant tumor.

He would appreciate his chili friends offering a prayer, or two, on his behalf.

I have known Tony for over thirty years and he has never been a quitter. He needs to know that we are all pulling for him in our thoughts and prayers.

I am sure emails offering support would be greatly appreciated, also.

His email is:

Flying to OMAHA

by Jim Maehl

A new airline with flights to Omaha from SoCal

If you have not made your flight arrangements to Omaha or suddenly finding yourself going at the last minute there is a new airline that has nonstop flights from Ontario California and San Diego. If you can book 2 weeks in advance you will find fares for less than $100 each way. This airline will give you something to eat on the flight and they also feature one dollar beers, instead of the usual five bucks. The airplanes they use are regional jets which mean they are a little smaller (EMB-145ER & EMB-135ER) but they fly as high and as fast as the bigger ones. They also have comfortable leather seat. Express Jet is the name of the airline.

.

Check out their web site at: http://www.xjet.com/

Good luck and good chili cooking, Capt. Jim Maehl

A GREAT BIG THANK YOU

from BOBBIE GAUL

THIS IS A THANK YOU FOR ALL MY CHILIHEAD FRIENDS FROM THE EAST, WEST, NORTH AND SOUTH, THAT SPONSORED ME THIS YEAR FOR THE "RELAY FOR LIFE".

THIS IS AN EVENT THAT IS HELD IN MANY TOWNS AND STATES THROUGHOUT THE USA TO RAISE MONEY FOR THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY.

I HAVE NOW BEEN DOING THIS FOR THE LAST FOUR YEARS, AND IF IT WASN'T FOR ALL MY CHILIHEAD FRIENDS I COULDN'T RAISE THE MONEY I DO. THE TOTAL I RAISED THIS YEAR WAS ($2500.00), RAISED MOSTLY FROM CHILIHEAD FRIENDS, AND ALSO MY CROCHETED ITEMS THAT I SELL ALL YEAR LONG. THE POPULAR ITEM THIS YEAR WAS MY CROCHETED ROSES.

(If you would like a rose I make all colors and can send them to you if you pay for the shipping) ALL MONIES GO TO THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY.

ONCE AGAIN I WAS THERE ALL NIGHT LONG, FROM 6PM TO 6AM. OUR TEAM WAS THE CURVES TEAM, WE HAD 93 MEMBERS AND WON THE PRIZE FOR BIGGEST TEAM AND MOST FUNDS RAISED BY A TEAM, WHICH WAS OVER $16,000.00. I WAS JOINED BY NORM AND OUR ELDEST DAUGHTER, DIANA, (they didn't stay all night but was there for the survivor lap and the family lap).

I DIDN'T WIN AGAIN THIS YEAR FOR THE MOST FUNDS RAISED BY AN INDIVIDUAL, BUT I DID COME IN SECOND. THE FIRST PLACE WINNER WON WITH $4000.00, (HE PUT TOGETHER A GOLF TOURNAMENT.) OF COURSE THE IMPORTANT THING IS NOT WINNING BUT BEATING THIS AWFUL DISEASE. (SO BE PREPARED TO BE HIT UP FOR MONEY AGAIN NEXT YEAR, LOL)

THE TOTAL AMOUNT RAISED BY THE SMALL COMMUNITY OF PAHRUMP, NV FOR THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY WAS ABOUT $81,000.00 AND STILL COUNTING.

Message from Karen Cooley

Dear Chiliheads:

I'd like to thank you wonderful folks so very much throughout Ed's illness and recent death for your continued support. The outpour of phone calls, emails, cards, etc., etc. and even attending his memorial service meant more to me than you'll ever know -- and I know a lot of you traveled a long distance to be there. It's been a rough go of it, but I know Ed's in a better place, free of all pain and suffering. Again, many, many thanks for your thoughtfulness, caring and love. I hope to see everyone in Omaha !!

With Love, Karen C.

New York State Chili Results

By Audrey Falkowski

The New York State Chili Championship was held at the Historic Saratoga Racetrack in Saratoga Springs for the first time, and we couldn't have picked a nicer day for it. As one of Steve's Professors used to say, "There's nothing like the backside of a Canadian high". The hot and humid weather that had been with us for the last week was replaced with temps in the 50's in the morning and got up to the very dry and pleasant mid 70's. As Mike Romano of the New York Racing Association said, it wasn't a pool day, so the racetrack was packed. The crowd looks forward to the chili cookoff each year and they responded this time. We even went thru 20 large cans of "backup" chili after the cooks ran out of their own special brand of People's Choice. If you've never been to a cookoff at a racetrack, it is so strange to see men coming by in suits and women in heels, dress and hats, all eating little cups of chili. We had over 600 spectators voting for their favorite chili and then going back to bet on their favorite horse. Mike Romano of the NYRA did a great job in getting the judges organized and making sure we had everything we needed. He even had a change to stay around and help us out in the judging tent, especially in breaking the ties. The Ladies of the Backstretch Employees Service Team, or BEST, collected the money and gave out the tasting kits. BEST helps jockeys and their families in case of injury or other special needs. They have benefited from the cookoff for the last several years. And the winners are:

.

Best Booth: Mario Saccoccio, Mad Hatter Chili, CT

.

People's Choice: Jerry Rezsnyak, Saratoga Springs, NY. Jerry was last year's PC winner.

.

Salsa:

Tie for 3rd not broken

Raymond Barry, NY

Mike Freedman, CT

2nd - Rocky Rockwell, NY

1st – Mike Kropp, NH

.

Chili Verde

5th – Maureen Myer, NY (Rookie)

4th – Lance Fyfe, MA

3rd – Bob Myer, NY

.

Red Chili

Tie for 4th, not broken

Rocky Rockwell, NY

Raymond Barry, NY

3rd – Jerry Buma, MA

2nd – Bob Myer, NY

1st – Judy Omerza, PA

.

Judy wins the Hat Trick with these wins. It also proves to her husband, Rich, that she really can cook when he's not there. (We missed you Richie).

I don't know how many cooks won at the racetrack, but they were all winners at the cookoff.

Mentone Regional - September 22nd

The last Southern California cookoff to advance to the 2007 World's Championship will be the Mentone Regional on Saturday, September 22nd. The cookoff is held at Greenspot Farms in (where else) Mentone. After the first sanctioned cookoff the setup of the contestants was changed. The chili contestants are placed right up front, mostly on level asphalt, and getting in and out is not an issue.

.

All three contests will be held. The first place prize money for traditional red chili has been increased. The winner will now receive $1,000.00!! People's Choice chili is an optional contest. You do not have to bring People's Choice chili unless you want to compete for the $200.00 prize for the most popular chili as voted by the spectators. The entry fee here is a little different. If you cook traditional red chili only or chili verde only, the entry fee is $35.00. If you cook both, the entry fee is still only $35.00. You can also enter the salsa contest, and the entry fee is still only $35.00. If you enter only the salsa contest, the entry fee is $15.00. What a bargain!

.

There are lots of activities all day and a good sixties band "The Yardogs". The trophies at this cookoff are spectacular---all are ceramic statuettes, and each one is a collector's item! There is a lot of money to be won. Besides $1,350.00 for traditional red chili, $200.00 for chili verde, $100.00 for salsa and $200.00 for people's choice chili, there are also money prizes for best booth, best showmanship, best costume, Miss Chili Pepper and Mr. Hot Sauce. There is also a hotly contended horseshoe tournament with money prizes for first and second places.

.

Chief Judge is Mike Austin. Chief Scorekeeper is Karen Ray. Ormly Gumfudgin is a good friend of the cookoff chairman, Jim Lotito, and always attends this event. If you plan to cook, please fax your entry form to Jim Lotito at (909) 389-7167, or enter online. If you are able to help with the judgin at Mentone, please email Mike Austin at ughlee@verizon.net or call him at (909) 883-3596. Come on out and join us for a day in the country.
