Delaware Valley Regional Cookoff Results

After a week of cold weather and rain in the Northeast, the Chili Gods were smiling down on us in Mullica Hill, NJ for the 2nd Annual Delaware Valley Regional Chili Cookoff. This cookoff, chaired by Rhone Carr, is one of (If not the) most successful cookoffs on the East coast. Rhone and Chief Judge Dave Lorenz spend months promoting the event and the 20,000 – 25,000 spectators proved their hard work really paid off. There are so many volunteers that make this event work too. Without them it would be pure chaos.

.

A wonderful cooks party on Friday night at the Holiday Inn Select gets things started. On Saturday, the cooks are treated to some breakfast munchies and wonderful goody bags donated by various businesses in the area. This year the cooks were more spread out which made for better flow of spectators. The sunshine really made the day. All those with cabin fever came out to enjoy the music, the kids events, and the chili.

.

In the judging area, there was lots of help. It was great having Carol and Dave Hancock, Vickie and Bob Marnick, and Kathy and Dave Hipskind all lending a hand with judging and scorekeeping. With 50 Reds, 30 Salsas and 23 Verdes, we were pretty busy.

We had some pretty happy travelers taking home some heavy skillets as trophys and cook stoves. We hope to see all of them and more next year. If you haven't cooked at this cookoff, you are missing out. This is a wonderful event.

(no subject)

Big Pine District.

WE NEED HELP!!! Big Pine, California

How else do we say it, we are "Chili Virgins" in the big world of Chili Cook Offs and we need your help.

This would be the 2nd Sanctioned cook off that has been held in Big Pine District. Last year's was held on a different date (way too hot in the middle of summer) but we still had a good time.

This year we decided to opt for cooler weather and provide more fun for the opening of fishing season in the Eastern Sierra as part of our Big Days in Big Pine.

As time has passed and we are now closer to the event we wondered why we were lacking in cooks. Our virginal committee now knows that there are other key chili events that are the ultimate for you chili experts this coming weekend. (We learn as we go).

Here's what we can offer:

No entry fee for the sanctioned cook off (It's Red Chili Only)

Prize money

$300 first place

$150 second place

$100 third place

Cooking starts at 11am at Mendenhall Park off Hwy 395. Winners announced at 3:45 pm

We are small but we have lots of fun.

.

Places to stay:

Glacier Lodge -760-920-0492 - be sure to mention the Chili Cook Special $40.00 +tax for two

Starlite Motel--- 760-938-2011 one room left

Bristlecone Pine Motel—760-938-2067 Friday night only

For other places call the number below and we will find you a place.

Big Pine is located in the beautiful Eastern Sierra of California. Four hours from Los Angeles, 3 hours from San Bernardino area, three to 3 ½ hours from Reno/Carson City area, and four hours from Las Vegas.

Calling All Chili Cooks and Judges,

Mike Austin wants to remind all of you that the 34th Annual California State Chili Championship is just around the corner. This fun event has something for everyone. An expected two tables of red chili cooks will vie for great prize money and the prestige of being named the California State Chili Champion. Chili Verde and Salsa contestants will also win great prize money and a trip to the World's Championship in October.

.

Please do Mike a favor and sign up online, if you plan to compete. It is so very helpful to have this information in advance. And, if you are competing, remember to bring your 2 gallons of People's Choice chili. This is not optional---it is a part of your entry fee, and everyone is expected to have People's Choice chili to serve. The crowds at this event are large and hungry, and they want to have chili to taste. To make it worth your while, there are good money awards for first and second place in the People's Choice category for ICS cooks, which is judged by ballots.

.

This is a large cookoff with lots going on. Bill Ray can use the help of any experienced judges who care to offer their services. Karen Ray can use the help of any scorekeepers who are lurking out there. Please don't wait to be asked. If you are there, you will be welcomed and put to work. Donnie Gordon is in charge of all of nonsanctioned events---the 3rd Annual Menudo Contest and the Restaurant/Open Division for chili---she would appreciate your help, too. In addition to the above contests, there are also a PT Cruiser Show, a Teardrop Trailer Show, karaoke contests, a gunfighter show, chili eating contest, Ms. Chili Pepper, Mr. Hot Sauce and the legendary Shoot 'n' Holler. We promise you won't be bored!

.

For more information, please call Mike Austin at (909) 883-3596 or email to ughlee@verizon.net. Judges please contact Bill Ray at (951) 683-5987 or email to Chiliray94@sbcglobal.net. See you on May 5th at the California State Chili Championship.

Diane Lentz update
I spoke with Diane this afternoon. She had a "port" put in surgically so they can administer the chemo that starts this Thursday. And....good news! Her results came back from the CT and bone scans. ALL NEGATIVE! So, the focus is the tumor in the breast and the one involved lymph node. If the chemo shrinks the tumor, then they know that the "chemo cocktail" works on this particular cancer, and they will want to then remove the tumor surgically and keep following the treatment to kill renegade cancer cells in her body. Please pray that God's presence will be with her and her doctors.

We're all family. Tell her you care......
.
Thanks.

Lompoc District Cookoff. – Winners List

.

Patti Shiflet put on another terrific cook-off this year at Lompoc. The weather was perfect and the crowd was larger this year than in recent memory. We had 10 Red Chili's, 7 Salsa's and unfortuantely only 2 Verde's were enteried, but both were very competitive according to the Judges. Joel Erickson was the Chief Judge and Beverly Erickson was the Chief Scorekeeper. This was the first year Harry & Kathy Edgar were not Chief Judge & Scorekeeper in at least 10 years as Harry was told he has Leukemia. Our thoughts are with Harry & Kathy for better days ahead. Patti started the day with Bloody Mary's in Honor of Ray Little & they served Ray's memory quite well! The Winners were:

.

Salsa-7 Entries

2nd Dave Thomas

1st Eileen Beaty (Eileen now has Salsa & Verde in the Win column)

.

Chili Verde-2 Entries

2nd Dave Thomas

1st Irene Menchaca

.

Red Chili-10 Entries

3rd Gene Beller

2nd Jim Beaty

1st Ken Brown

RGV Regional on South Padre Island.

I am wanting to communicate to the cooks coming to the
RGV Regional on South Padre Island.
.
The cook off site is at the end of a 100 yd boardwalk.
Those cooks driving in could be a big help to their
fellow cooks who are flying. If they could bring a
two wheel cart along to share it would make this task
easy. Setting up Friday evening after 6 pm will be
easy as they can drive in. The water park is open
til 6 pm but on Saturday it is open until 7 pm and
they can't drive into the area at that time for safety
reasons. They would have to wait until the crowd
emptied out. If they want to get out fast they will
have to cart or carry the equipment back to the
parking lot.
.
If anyone can bring a two wheel cart along it will be
a big help for those in a hurry to get out. Just
planning ahead.
