DIONE COOLEY going HOME from Hospital

From Skip Cooley: Well guess what Santa Claus gave me a present early this year I must have been a good boy, she is slightly used and beat up chili cook already at home and she feels a lot better. She is now looking for a world championship chili recipe that has no salt.

Happy holidays to my whole chili family, thanks for all the cards letters e-mails and phone calls. We both loved and needed the support.

Thanks again Skipper

Back-to-Back Winterfreeze and the Great Forsyth Regional cookoffs

.

Cooks need to sign up soon for the Great Forsyth cookoff on Saturday Jan. 13th and Winterfreeze on Sunday Jan. 14th to avoid being left out. Both contests feature Red, Verde, and Salsa contests, and total prizes for both days are expected to be about $4,000. The Forsyth Il cookoff is located in Hickory Point mall just off Interstate I-72. Winterfreeze, located in Springfield, IL 45 miles away, will again be in the local KC hall banquet facility, and will feature a new band this year, and NFL football in the adjacent bar. Hugh crowds are expected at both cookoffs. Since there are size limitations at both sites, cooks are urged to sign up soon. For questions please call me at the number below, and I’ll send you an application if you don’t have one already.

Another Southern California House Party - by Karen Ray

Last Sunday, December 17th, Mike and Bonnie Ford hosted a practice cookoff at their beautiful home in La Mirada, CA. For a week the weatherpersons had predicted that the Northern Pacific storm that hurt the Washington State area would move south for the weekend. NOT!!! Mike asserted early in the week that "it would not rain on his parade", and he was absolutely correct. It was a very nice day, although a jacket day.
.
Just in case, Mike had prepared carports and canopies enough to accomodate all of the expected contestants. A few cooks put up their own canopies; most of us took advantage of the furnished accomodations. There was a very nice turnout of cooks and judges for Mike and Bonnie's event, hopefully the first of many Holiday Practice Cookoffs/Parties. Four cooks vied for the Chili Verde title. Would have been five, but yours truly did not get her act together. You don't want to hear the excuses! There were seven red contestants and a goodly number of judges.
.
As always at these parties, there was food. The Fords furnished food; everybody who came brought food. We grazed all day, and it was wonderful! There were Christmas gifts and Christmas greetings and much good fellowship. The chili folks are, after all, a very friendly community. Chief Judge was Claude Covington. Chief Scorekeeper was Mary Ellen Weber. She came complete with Bloody Marys, which were very much appreciated!
.
The contestants judged their own chili, then the "judges" judged the chili. When the festivities were over the winners were:
.
Chili Verde: Bob Dyer
.
Traditional Red Chili:
3rd, Mark Hammes
2nd, Bill Ray
1st, Mike Austin
.
We are all looking forward to Mike and Bonnie's second annual Holiday Party!

Paul Whitney's Question
I have recently been asked to teach a cooking class about chili here in Flagstaff at a new cooking school. The class is in two months, so I have plenty of time to prepare. Has anyone out there taught such a class before and could they please contact me with info on how they went about doing it? Thank you very much. I can be reached at GolfNChili@aol.com . Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah and Happy New Years to all of you out there in chililand.

Jack Ware Update - from Beverly King
I spoke to Jack’s son, Kenny, yesterday and he tells me that Jack has moved to the Sunrise House, an assisted living facility. Kenny said his dad hadn’t bounced back like everyone hoped he would after his surgery and that it was becoming harder for him to manage in the apartment and to cook. He has a small apartment at the Sunrise House and can still fix breakfast and lunch for himself but he has the evening meal in the dining room with the other residents.
So far Jack isn’t driving his truck or talking about chili cookoffs but hopefully that will change in a few months.
I’m sure Jack would enjoy hearing from his many chili friends so feel free to write or call him at:

Sunshine Regional Info
Would you please send this out to the legions of chili cooks?
.
Re: The Sunshine Regional in Kissimmee, Florida 1/13/2007.
I spoke to Karen Adell Director of sales at the Best Western Maingate East Hotel & Suites in Kissimmee and she said she could give chili cooks a rate of$69.00 each night. If you call her at 407-994-2017 ext.702 she can set up rooms for you. She made a block of 10 rooms so please hurry! Her email is kadell@vn-properties.com!
Tell her that Mad Mike sent you and we hope this helps!
Can't wait to see y'all there and have a great holiday !
