Dick "Pops" Baker " Line Shack Chili"

Dick Baker 89, of the Baker Boys, long time ICS Chili Cook and father of Carl Baker, who passed away one week ago today, passed away Thursday night at approx. 10:15 pm in Las Vegas. He was at the Spring Valley Hospital in Las Vegas.

Carl and Dick were "The Line Shack Chili Team", and cooked chili all over the west. They had a Great Showmanship Team and were Great cooks. They have won many cookoffs and cooked in the World's Cookoff 7 times. More information to follow. It sounds like the family is going to make arrangements to have a memorial for both of them at the same time. They were inseparable.

Dick's wife Barbara, daughter Claudia and Carl's wife Dona will need your prayers and support. I will get some address's and phone numbers and post them soon.

.

Looks like 2009 is starting out like 2008.

Too many good friends and family passing away, lets stop it now!

THURSDAY - Jan 22, 2009

Lake Las Vegas District

Cookoff this weekend

.

I realize this is late, but I didn't get the answers I needed until today. Jim has gotten several emails with questions and I'm gonna try to answer them.

.

Canopies - They are supplying canopies for the People's Choice cooks, but they are charging them a $60 Entry fee. I told them we will bring our own (we are on grass) and not to look for any People's Choice from the ICS cooks.

.

Entry Fee - was originally set at $35 each Red & Green as the prize money is the same. When the flyer came out it was $40 each ("we are Lake Las Vegas and everything cost more).

Taster Kits are being sold for $5 each (for the same reason)

.

Health Dept - We are supposed to have the same Health Inspector as in Laughlin. There is a commercial kitchen in the judging area for washing. Sponsor is providing sanitizer bucket. Inspector is supposed to show up around 9am and Jim is talking to Pete Caimi about making the rounds with her. There is some concern about cooking on grass. Sponsor is working on providing some sort of covering if required.

.

Directions: They are supposed to have signs for the cooks, but just in case ... from US 95 exit on Lake Mead Pkwy and go East to Lake Las Vegas Pkwy. Go thru (1/2 way to make it going straight) the first traffic circle and follow signs to Monte Lago Casino. Go past casino and pull into parking lot on left. You will be able to drive in and unload then must return to the designated parking area.

.

Hope I've answered all the questions. If you have more give me a call

MONDAY Jan 19. 2009

Great Forsyth, IL. Regional

ICS Chili Championship

1/17/09

.

"Hap" Gilbert (Mayor of Forsyth) did another outstanding job of putting together the Great Forsyth Regional Chili cookoff for the fourth year in a row at the beautiful Hickory Point Mall.

We had a great ICS cookoff with Red Chili, Verde, Salsa and also a "celebrity" home style" Chili cookoff, all for charity. It is too soon to know the totals, but several thousands of dollars were raised for the Salvation Army and the Catholic Charities.

Immediately after the cookoff we all went next door to the Homewood Suites Hotel for plenty of delicious food and adult beverages thanks to Jim Dietz the General Manager of the Homewood Suites, as well as

Jay Nicol, (Rays Chili) and Doug Cekander, (Buffalo Wild Wings). All of this was provided free to the cooks and judges by these fine gentlemen...... Everyone and a good time.

Be sure to mark your calendar for this date next year as well as the Winterfreeze Regional the next day in Springfield, IL. just 35 min. apart. These 2 cookoffs have been increasing their respective contributions to the various charities for several years now and have become a public, as well as, the cooks favorites.

.

Special thanks to Kathy Mizer (Village Clerk) who organizes all this and puts this together as well as putting up with all us. She and her staff do a very good job.

.

Also, Thanks to Jeff Netser (2005 Verde World Champion) for taking charge and running the "Celebrity Homestyle" cookoff with 25 contestants.

.

We were very fortunate to have not only the current Verde World Champion, Lauren Ray, but we also had 4 other World Champions in attendance. Jeff Netser, Jerry Simmons, Kimberly Mallory and Tom Calvert.

Nice group to have around!

.

SALSA 16 judges

12 contestants

3rd = Mary Thomas 10 pts. (Clinton, IL.)

2nd = Tom Calvert 13 pts. (Taylorville, IL.)

1st = Chris Toney 18 pts. (St Louis, MO.)

VERDE 15 judges

14 contestants

3rd = Lynn Virant 11 pts. (Omaha, NE.)

2nd = Julie Netser 13 pts. (Seymour, IN.)

1st = Tom Calvert 17 pts. (Taylorville, IL.)

.

RED 34 judges

31 contestants

3rd = "Aldo" Klinghammer 10 pts. (Taylorville, IL.)

2nd = Larry Eastep 12 pts. (Springfield, IL.)

1st = Carolyn Wilson 13 pts. (Rochester, IL.)

.

Naturally all of the winners were very excited and especially Carolyn for her first ever World Qualifier.

She stated the $1,200 for her first place win will get her to The 2009 WCCC. in fine fashion!

.

Congratulations to all the contestants.......They are all winners!

Chris's Nicoll Funeral

To all friends, family, chili- heads; and those who had best wishes for Chris and I :

Thank you so much for all the support you have given me and Chris.  It would have been unlivable for me without all of you there,   There is an Obituary on line that allows friends and family to write a little note and/ or upload a photo.  I would appreciate it you are so inclined to make an entry or upload a favorite photo. I will be having it hardbound as a legacy book at the end of the year.   Again THANK  YOU ALL YOUR SUPPORT.

My love to you all.
