FRIDAY - July 10, 2009

POSTPONED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE
Aug 2nd Studio Diner-Marine Bob Sennett Cookoff
.
Greetings Chiliheads & fans the Marine Bob Sennett/Studio Diner Chili Cookoff,
I unfortunately at this time am forced to make the decision to postpone
What would have been our 3rd Annual Chili Cookoff this Aug. 2nd, 2009.
The last 2 Years we were pleased to have plenty of talented Cook's & Judges
From the International Chili Society participate and make our event a big success.
We had also raised north of $15,000.00 for the local Marine Corps League's "Injured Marine Fund".
A truly great non profit started in 2003 that flies Parents & family members to San Diego
From across the country to visit their injured Marine at San Diego's Bob Wilson (Balboa) Naval hospital.
Our event has been the sole single day largest fundraiser for the "Injured Marine Fund".
However events a little beyond our control, like the current state of the economy and a shortage of talented I.C.S. capable Chili Cook's (due to either already qualifying for the "World Championship" in October or other commitments)
Leaves us with the prospect of putting on a less then successful Cookoff at this time.
That is not something I or the Injured Marine Fund wanted to be a part of since we have worked to hard to create a great family event.
Any and all monies we have received from Cooking teams will be returned immediately.
We apologize for this inconvenience and wish we did not have to postpone this event.
We deeply appreciate all the support from the Cook's, the Judge's, the attendee's and everybody Who have supported us for the last 2 years.
We will search the calander and pick an appropriate date in the future to again have a successful event to raise needed funs for the IMF, honor Marine Bob Sennett and allow all our ICS competitors, Judges and attendees enjoy themselves at the best I.C.S. event here in San Diego.
Special Thanks to Claude, Mary Ellen, Pete Caimi, Steve, Ughlee and all the Cook's & Judges who have helped
in the past & were prepared to do so again.
Sincerely,
Jim Phillips
Cookoff Chairman

High Sierra / Nevada Capital Regionals
For all you old-timers, you know that Bill and Georgie Ruff built the chili cookoffs in Northern California and Northern Nevada and were beloved by everyone in chilidom. It's hard to believe that Bill has been gone 20 years now. Georgie remarried and moved to Bath, New York. Her second husband, "Moose", died recently and with all of the Ruff kids, Scott, Lee, Carol and Chuck still living in the Reno/Sparks/Carson City area, Georgie has decided to return. She has been invited to be our honorary guest of honor at the High Sierra Regional Cookoff, an event started by Bill Ruff 32 years ago. Please come and renew your friendship with Georgie and support Bill Ruff's legacy.
Back to back Regionals--, Saturday, July 18 and Sunday, July 19--High Sierra Regional and Nevada Capital Regional, on the grounds (grass and trees) at Glen Eagles Restaurant, Carson City, Nevada. We need cooks and can't lose our regional status after 32 years and 4 World Champions.
With 7 of our usual cooks already qualified, it will be tough to get 20 cooks. But with all of those cooks out of the way, you have even a better chance to win. Please, please, please come and cook.  Bob Grayson, HotAirBob@aol.com, 775-882-6878.

CALIFORNIA'S "BEAT THE HEAT DISTRICT"
SUNDAY JULY 5TH 2009
 .
California's "Beat the Heat District", was just what we did.   What a pretty day in the San Bernardino mountains.   The cook off was sponsored by Bob Yeomans and the Back Yard Equestrian Center.   It was held on the ball fields at San Maritz.  This venue is on the shores of Lake Gregory.  The skies were clear and blue, but a little windy  most of the day.   It was probably good we had the breeze, because it would have gotten pretty hot.   We had a large hungry crowd show up, wanting to taste some good chili.  The cooks ran out of people's choice.  Bob Yeomans paid half the monies back to the ICS cooks for the winners of People's Choice, for first, second and third places.   This is a good incentive for the cooks to bring lots of p/c.  We also had 4 Local Cooks show up with their crock pots full of chili.  This really helped to feed the masses.  I think we will get some new ICS cooks out of this group.   They really had fun sharing their chili and hearing the comments from the crowd.
Bob Yeomans and family did a great job with this cook off.  Also all the great volunteers were busy and making it a great event.  It always helps to have plenty of good support.
With the help of Kathy Stewart as our Chief Score Keeper and her husband Mike, the judging area was in good hands. Kathy's sister and friends a lso helped with scoring.  My son Tony was also a lot of help setting the tables up in the AM and taking them down and helping where needed.  We had some great judges show up, just ask Bill Ray.  Thank you all for your support and hopefully this event will grow next year.
 .
The P/C winners were:
Chili Cartel  $250.00,
Just Smitty's Chili $193. and
Uncle Leo's Chili $83.00.
 .
There were not enough interested cooks to have Verde or Salsa contests.
 .
The winners of the Traditional Red were:
 .
3rd place Russell Barnes " Sancho Blanco"
 .
2nd place Leo Nolen "Uncle Leo's Rocky Mountain Chili"
 .
1st place Bill Ray   "Mountain Express Chili Gang"
 .
Congratulations to all of you.
 .
Bill finally got out of the 2nd place groove.
 .
I guess if you had Mountain in your chili team name you had a chance.
"Sancho Blanco Mountain"?  I don't know.
 .
Thank You All
Mike "Ughlee" Austin
Chief Judge

Hello!

I am writing to tell you about the ICS sanctioned Heartland Regional Chili Cook-Off & Salsa Contest held during the Decatur Celebration on Saturday, August 8th in downtown Decatur, Illinois.  We'd love to have your help getting the word out to the chili community.

The unique aspect of our cook-off is that it is held within a massive street festival.  Decatur Celebration, Illinois' largest free family street festival, hosts more than 300,000 people each year. The event takes place within a 22 city block area of downtown Decatur, Illinois, featuring national entertainment, specialty attractions, 69 one-of-a-kind food vendors, roving characters, exhibits, and hundreds of events. In 1991, the festival was selected as one of the "Top 100 Events in North America" by the American Bus Association.  A few of the entertainers performing FREE are: pop rock with The Romantics; Grammy winner, Richard Marx; The Miracles; ABBA Gold; R&B group, The Spinners; country star, Joe Diffe; Christian pop with Natalie Grant; Kavan the World's # 1 Rock N Roll Elvis and many more stage & street attractions, all FREE!

 .
Venue will be in Sports and Recreation Pavilion, an indoor location located at Lansdowne Park, 1015 Bank Street, Ottawa Ontario during SuperEX 2009.  Contestants must use a naphtha fuelled cook stove - propane will not be allowed in the building.  You will be given an 8' table and 2 chairs for your 10' space and decorating and having fun is highly encouraged!
 .
Due to City of Ottawa Health Regulations all contestants must read the document titled (for a copy: chilidog@windsor.igs.net) "Special Events Pamphlet" and fill out the "Notification - Special Events" form and email it back to foodhandlercertifica@ottawa.ca
 .
Please also note that City Health regulations require that salsa be prepared on site.  Herb and Spice Shop will be providing a variety of produce and the contest will be "Iron Chef" style. The local TV station will tape the contestants pulling the produce they need. As we get closer, we'll post which produce will be available. Be sure to bring your special secret ingredients!

Wendy and I will be making the 8 hour drive to be chief judge and scorekeeper. We even have a couple of our regular Windsor regular judges making the trip.
 .
Very important...check the US Customs website to see what's acceptable for you to re-enter the US. Of course, passports are best.
 .
Check this out. It's a very enthusiastic group that's trying to put this on.
