NEW MEXICO BACK 2 BACKS
.
New Mexico, Land of Enchantment.  Well, it lived up to the billing on the weekend of 8/8 and 8/9.  The crew at the Route 66 Hotel Casino were extremely accommodating and so was the weather.  We had temperatures in the low 90's, a light breeze to cool things off from time to time and monsoon took a break for the weekend.  Nothing but clear blue skies!  When I showed up on Friday night, the set up looked like a mini-worlds, with the casino supplying tents, tables and chairs.  They even set up a monster wash station so the cooks wouldn't have to take all their gear up to the room to wash (avoiding that lovely red ring around the bathtub so many of us have left housekeeping to cleanup) Skip Sayre and all the folks we dealt with at the casino were a dream to work with, nothing we needed was more than 5 minutes away if we requested it.  The casino itself was a nice change from prior years, with beautiful pillowtop beds in the rooms, high roofed ceiling in the gambling area so it did not reek of cigarettes, good food and bars.  Yes, this casino does serve liquor, if you so desire it.  There was a classic car show in conjunction with the cookoffs, which brought in over 250 vehicles and a nice crowd.  Bob and Kathy Plager came down from Colorado along with Al Henry to help out in the judging area and scorekeeping.  They were all an immense help in keeping both days running very smoothly.  We had cooks come in from Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Texas and of course, New Mexico.  Saturday, the Southwest Regional, had 16 reds, 7 greens and 8 salsas competing.  Sunday, the New Mexico State Championship, the numbers went to 18 reds, 7 greens and 7 salsas.  The results were as follows:
8/8/09

TUESDAY - Aug 11, 2009

ARROYO GRANDE DISTRICT
Arroyo Grande is a long way from the home of the Chief Judge, Scorekeeper, and most of the chili cooks still trying to get to the World cookoff. Somehow, we all managed to get there. And what time we all had!! The weather was perfect, cool in the morning, a light wind in the afternoon, and some sun. Don't forget, this is wine country, so the moist air is needed for the wines produced here. They had booths for wine tasting, strawberries dipped in chocolate, tri -tip sandwiches and hot dogs to satisify the crowd. And what a crowd came out!!!
Tonhia Fields, the chairperson, and her sister Jolinda, were at the park to set up everything for the judging area. Tohnia also had helpers put together 750 chili tasting kits, and they ran out of them!!!!! This is their FIRST cookoff!!!! The consensus of the cooks was evident. They had been treated with the utmost courtesy, and the people who came out to support this cookoff were some of, if not the best, to happen to a cookoff.
Barry and S ylvia Steinberg, the chief judge and my assistant scorekeeper, checked into the motel on Saturday. What did they find? Well, just a bottle of wine for him, and one for me and 2 glasses each. What a surprise!! Then we open up the envelope attached to the wine bottle and find gift certificates to JOCKOS!!!!! We were not only surprised but mostly floored!! We enjoyed our meal, and I have at least 2 lunches from the leftovers!
Needless to say Tohnia Fields listened to all that was said to make a sucess out of the cookoff, and it was. I have been at cookoffs for over 20 years, and haven't seen a first time cookoff run as smoothly as this!!! PLEASE keep this district on your calendar for next year. We had 13 red cooks, so only 7 more!!!!!
 .
The winners:    ONLY VERDE & RED
 .
VERDE:
3rd: Darril Shiflet  14 points
2nd: Mike Ford    20 points
1st: Svlvia Rasey 24 points
 .
 RED:
5th: John Stevens  Tanner Jacks Restaurant
4th:  Howard Choate
3rd:  Patti Shiflet- Chairperson for the Lompoc Cookoff
2nd: Jim Rasey
1st:  Bill Ray  (2nd Dist Win Q'd)
 .
Thanks to Ken and Jan Brown for coming up from Simi Valley to judge and to Pepper
Davis from the radio station to announce the winners, and to all who had any part in making this a success! From the comments I heard for the cooks, judges, and most importantly, the spectators, they will be here next year. Let's make it qualify for REGIONAL status!!!
Thanks to Barry and Sylvia for this weekend!!!!!
