I’m sure that there has been an enormous response to my request for judges to the upcoming event. Unfortunately I neglected to publish my e-mail address in order to receive the enthusiastic replies from the judging community. So, please, if you would like to judge at the Cook-off, please e-mail me at Baja_chili@hotmail.com. Thanks for your support.

SHIRLEY JUDSON - A SPECIAL LADY

Shirley Judson passed away peacefully last night surrounded by her entire family. She fought her illnesses to the very end. As we all know, Shirley's ICS friends were her extended family. I talked to her last week and she told me that she was planning to attend the Folsom Chili Cookoff the next Saturday. Shirley's smiling face was missed that day and will be missed always.

.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the Red Bluff Rotary Club's Scholarship Fund. Arrangements for services are as follows:

Okay fellow chiliheads, July 4th is fast approaching and we would like some idea of how many cooks we will have, and we still need help in the judging department.

This is a great venue for a cookoff, (on the grass with shade trees aplenty), the Elks Lodge is always good to the cooks and the prize money is outstanding.

Please let me or Don Hammes know if you are coming and what contests you will be entering. Don's email address is RATSHACK2@AOL.COM and my address is chiliahr@veawb.coop

SNOWMASS SETS CROWD AND COOK RECORDS

The Snowmass/Aspen B2B cookoffs on June 9 & 10 produced a record number of cooks (over 20) participating in the three categories and record hungry thirsty throngs each day.

.

Located right on the Snowmass ski mountain the organizers, in only their third year, have built the event, Snowmass Chili & Brew Fest, into a top tourist draw with every room in town sellilng out. The cooks were treated with fabulous trophies, record prize money, and pre-cooked sponsor People's Choice Chili. Even with this additional 200 gallons, the crowd hungered for even more.

.

No cook went thirsty though with over 75 different micro brews on tap for us to try! We were even served at our booth some cool brews on Saturday by the staff.

.

The winners: Friday: Verde, Erika Knutson taking home $500 with Mike Rook raking in the big prize, $1,000 for Red PLUS tops in Salsa. What a day for Mike.

.

His wife joined him the next day and almost duplicated his feat by wining Salsa and lost the tie-breaker in Red to Lynn Kost-Virant. Not only did Lynn take home the custom trophy, she also won her second district to make it to the World's Finals. Paul Cordova took top honors in Verde to again return to the World's.

.

Due to several cooks having qualified earlier, the cookoff feel just three cooks short of hitting the magical 20 on day two in red to make Regional status next year. To draw even more cooks and to make serving the huge crowd easier, the organizers are already developing plans to improve the prize money and ease of serving another record crowd in 2007.

.

Spend a few days in the cool Colorado mountains at one of the top tourist spots in the country next June.

NEPA District Winners - Audrey & Steve Falkowski

The clouds were still with us in the North East as the cooks set up their tents. This time there was no rain, but the wind kept the temps in the low 50’s. It’s great weather to eat chili, but tough on the cooks. This cookoff is put on by the Lake Ariel Fire Company in Northeast Pennsylvania. Jim Miller, (a chili cook) and all the people associated with the fire company really helped with the event. They had raffles and a very unique chili eating contest. Working with Tasty Crème doughnuts, they filled plain doughnuts with chili. Each contestant was given 12 doughnuts and had 5 minutes to eat them all or as many as they could.

Most told us later that this method is NOT the best way to eat chili.

Later the sun came out as did the spectators. We hope more cooks can come to this well run event next year. Dave Lorenz did a great job a Chief Judge.
