Jan Loop Fritsch
Jan Loop Fritsch succumbed to cancer and died peacefully in her sleep on Monday, May 21st. She is survived by her beloved husband, Steve, her two beautiful daughters and several grandchildren.
.
Jan started cooking with CASI in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area some 30 years ago and always had a smile, a joke and a laugh. I've never known anyone with her sense of humor and love of life and good times. In the late 1990's Jan & Steve took over the ICS Texas State Championship in Palestine and anyone who attended knew the cooks could not have been treated better ... they were the ultimate hosts. Jan won the esteemed Texas Open Chili Cookoff and qualified for Terlingua several times, as well as competing in ICS cookoffs through her later years. Steve can receive cards at their home at 337 Pine Valley Drive, Fairview, Texas. Personally, I am so very glad she and Steve found each other and shared a perfect love.

Go with God, Jan

Nancy & I will be out of town until May 29, 2007 -
I resume the BLOG at that time.
Thanks, Dick

British Columbia Championship
It was a very nice day in Crestin, BC, Canada on Sunday May 20, 2007. Unfortunately there were only 7 cooks for red, 7 cooks for Salsa and not enough for Verde. This is a small cookoff in the beautiful Pacific Northwest  and the Lion's Club is the sponsor. There was the Blossom Festival Parade on Saturday and the Chili Cookoff  and very large Car Show on Sunday.  There were cooks from Alberta, Washington, Idaho and British Columbia. The winners are as follows:
Salsa:
1st place - Joe Barrett, ID (gives him a Hat Trick)
2nd place - Ron Michel, Calgary
3rd place - Zack Whitson, ID
.
Red:
1st place Steve Porteous, British Columbia (won the tie breaker)

Silver State Regional

By: Bobbie Gaul

.

The Silver State Regional was held at Petrack Park this year. The cooks loved being on grass with shade trees all around, instead of on the hot pavement at Saddlewest. I am told that the cookoff will be held there again next year. The temperature was in the 90's but no one noticed because of the grass and shade trees, and there was very little wind for a change. We would like to thank all the cooks that came out to support us in spite of the gas prices. Also our thanks go out to the judges that came to help out with the judging which includes our current World Champion J.R. Knudson and his lovely wife Margo, Edi and Ormly Gumfudgin, Armando & Patricia Sanchez, Claude Covington who does a great job as MC every year and his wife Joyce, Bob & Kathy Plager, Naurene Luse, Jim & Wilma Maehl, Donnie Gordon, Fred & Leah Wieland, Sonny Allen & Nita Montgomery, the group from Lake Havasu Chili Society who are always on hand to help, John & Arlee Holtz, and of course Phil Morosky who supports us every year and does a great job of helping out in the judging area. Hopefully I have not forgotten any one, but all of you know that Norm and I appreciate all your support. The party at Norm & Bobbie's was once again a great success and a good time was had by all. Now on to the important stuff:

Sunday was pretty much the same weather wise as Saturday except we had a little more wind in the afternoon. So, I can say that the weather really co-operated with us this year.

Pana Heritage Day

Chili Cookoff Results

May 19, 2007

.

Great weather and Biscuit and Gravy from the Pana Masonic Lodge greeted the Chili Cooks and their support teams for the 2007 Pana Heritage Day's International Chili Society Sanctioned Lincoln Prairie Trail Regional Chili Cookoff. Cooks from six States, including seven World Champions gathered in Downtown Pana in the midst of the 50 year old, eight-block street fair. Over half of the cooks entered in the event have made appearances on the Food Channel and included 2000 & 2006 Verde Chili World Champion Jerry Simmons, Florissant, Missouri; 2004 Verde Chili World Champion, Wes Carlson, Rockford, Illinois; 2005 Verde Chili World Champion Jeff Netser, Seymour, Indiana; 1996 Red Chili Champion, Georgia Weller, Rockton, Illinois, 2000 Red Chili World Champion, Jim Weller, Rockton, Illinois; and 2004 Salsa World Champion, Tom Calvert, Taylorville, Illinois; and 1978 Jambalaya World Champion, Norman "Pappy" Melancon, Gonzales, Louisiana. It is estimated that near 6,000 were in attendance for the three day as the Pana Chamber of Commerce strived to support the family orientation of a free event for all ages.

New Jersey State Results - by Audrey Falkowski

The town of Tom's River, NJ had luck on their side on Saturday, May 19 for the 18th Annual New Jersey State Chili and Salsa Cookoff. The forecast was for rain and cool temps for the day. We did have the cool temps, but that was perfect for the thousands of spectators tasting and voting for their favorite hot chili and salsa. The rain threatened several times, but never came. The Tom's River Business Improvement District did their usual fantastic job of making all the cooks feel welcome. After a huge hot breakfast in the morning, they brought all the cooks wonderful goodie bags and then had a great catered lunch of sandwiches, fruits, veggies, cookies and sodas. Last year's winners took their ride on the fire engine down the street in front of all the booths during the parade at the start of the cookoff, as all the other cooks showered the area with confetti. The festival is several blocks long with chili booths, vendors and all kinds of food for sale. The townspeople look forward to this event every year.

Chili Cooks' Cooking History on ICS web page - from Susie Baumberger

I just discovered the personal Winning Cookoff histories for each chili cook on the ICS web page.
WOW! What a great idea!
To check out your history (or anyone else) go to the ICS Home Page www.chilicookoff.com then click on "chili champions," scroll down to "Winner Search" and type in the first name and last name, then hit "find."
I have no idea how long this feature has been functioning!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Technical Note from BLOGGER) Each Name is linked to the Winners List for the years 1997 thru 2007 as they appear on the Winners List for each given year, if the cookoffs listed for those years have the complete information, then your Name will have the up-to-date information.
