MARYLAND STATE

Hello from the East Coast. The Maryland State Chili Championship was held today in Frederick Maryland at the Flying Dog Brewery. The weather cooperated and the rain held off during the cook off. There were cooks from Maryland, Virginia, Massachusetts, New Jersey and West Virginia. There were well over 3000 spectators attending to hear music from several bands, drink plenty of awesome Flying Dog beer, and eat first class chili. They were not disappointed. Everyone should think about this cook off next year.

Ghon Eckley Request

Hey folks instead of beating the cook off drum for Maryland State, I have a request of all of my chili friends. My daughter Linda is doing the Breast Cancer 3 day walk the weekend of WCCC. I read her personal donation page and I welled up. She is walking in the 3 day to honor her aunt a survivor, and in memory of Kim's mom and my mother, her grandmother that she is named after, that she will never meet. Time is short, because of her busy college schedule she is unable to beat on doors to get support. I know that times are tight and the economy is in the crapper so if you can't support her at this time I understand. But if you could muster up 5 dollars or more it would make her that much closer. Please take a look at her page and if you feel that you could get behind her thank you. If you could also leave her a little word of encouragement on her message board that would be great also.

CAMARILLO HOSPICE COOKOFF

.

I have been to many first time cookoffs, but this ranks right up there as being one of the best run, co-ordinated, attended cookoff ever!!! Plus the fact we were in Camarillo where the temperature was in the mid 70's!!!! What a change for most of us! To get out of the smoke that has engulfed the LA area lately, it was great change.

I can't give enough thanks, or congratulatious to, Yvonne Parker for her hard work. The amount of time she spent working out all the little details were evident in the end result. Joel Erickson (Chief Judge) and I met with her and she showed us everything she had done, and we were impressed!! The result of all her hard work led to a very sucessful day for the Camarillo Hospice and to all of those who attended. I also want to thank June for the attention she gave the judging area. She helpled get us the water, beer and everything else we needed.

A special thanks goes to Sandy Nirenberg who made sure everything, and everone, was having a great time. Based on the number of attendees, I know this was a HUGE success!!

My thanks to those who came to cook; from the Bay area to San Diego, did we had chili cooks!!! We had 21 Red, and 8 Verde cooks. Thanks to all of you, next year WE ARE A REGIONAL!!!! So don't miss this one next year!

Thank you to the judges who came to support this wonderful event, without you this would not have been as much fun as we all had.

I need to thank some very special people: Beverly Erickson and Debbi Drake helped me keep score; Debbie LaFarr was our Beer Fetcher ( we lost June somehow). Thanks for handling that. All of them MADE me sit down and just have some lunch as they took care of the judging tables. I want to say an extra THANK YOU for that!!

OK, the winners:

VERDE AND RED ONLY

VERDE

3rd Sachiko Brecke

2nd Greg La Roche

1st Paul LaRoche

RED

5th Howard Choate

4th Suzie Baumberger

3rd Ron Burt

2nd Syvlia Rasey

1st Jim Rasey

As you can see, this was a family won cookoff!!!

Thanks again to all of you; your support and help are greatly appreciated.

Thanksgiving Back-to-Back Regional's

At Avi Casino

Once again, the Avi Casino in Laughlin, Nevada, will host the Thanksgiving Back-to-Back Regional's on Friday, November 27, 2009 (Mojave Desert Regional), and Saturday, November 28, 2009 (High Desert Robinson Regional). We usually have fantastic weather, competitive cooking, and an all-around great time. The cooking area is on the grass (easy on the feet!), with a beautiful view of the Colorado River -- one of the most beautiful cooking venues in the ICS schedule! There's live music, and lots of interesting vendors. One of the really great things about the Thanksgiving Back-to-Back is that the Avi Casino is a smaller, more intimate casino, so the cooks' after-hours socializing is maximized! Chief Judge is Jim Maehl, Scorekeeper is Donnie Gordon, and Chairperson is Susie Baumberger.

.

Thanksgiving is only 2 months away! If you want discounted room rates at the Avi Casino for the Thanksgiving Back-to-Back Regional's, call 1-800-4AVI-2WIN and use the discount code "CHILI-09." Room rates are as follows:

.

Wednesday before Thanksgiving $25.00

Thursday (Thanksgiving Day) $65.00

Friday & Saturday $75.00

.

Please sign up online at www.chilicookoff.com. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call me, Susie Baumberger, at 661-714-6234. I'll see you at the river!

TEXAS ICS STATE

The Texas State was held today in San Antonio Texas at Cowboys Dance Hall.

Cooks came early and stayed late as they all wanted to impart to the organizers how great it was to have a 2 day back to back ICS event in Texas! The Non Profit,Soldiers Angels, Gerri and Jim Riley did EVERYTHING they could to help the cooks today and should be commended for their efforts!

.

It was a beautiful but hot day with temps in the high 90's.

Since we were chief judge and scorekeeper today, we don't know the exact numbers, but they were good.

.

I need to say something....the Texas cooks really rolled out the hospitality to Kat and I and offered us anything we needed. It was great and almost felt like home. We were very happy to cook with Bruce and Cindy Reed Wilkins in their tent! We would highly recommend this B2B to any cook when the new date is announced for next year.
