SATURDAY - September 30, 2006

Heart of Gold District---Del Mar, CA
This was a very well planned, well executed cookoff. It is a shame that the timing, so close to the World's Championship, prevented it from having the participation that it deserved from contestants.
.
The venue is the same as that for the Western Regional Chili Cookoff in August---the infield of the racetrack at Del Mar. The difference is that there are no horse races at this time, so the access to the event and parking are much easier. The weather was perfect: overcast until about noon, then mildly sunny with no wind at all.
.
Chairperson Jan Ferris is not a stranger to the chili folks. In the 80s she chaired a very successful ICS cookoff in San Marcos, CA whose winner was sent to cook in a CASI event in San Marcos, TX, all expenses paid! Jan was also the first Chairperson of the Western Regional Chili Cookoff. Her experience shone through with her thoughtful consideration of the cooks and judges who attended today's event.
.
This cookoff was held in conjunction with the "Heart of Gold" motorcycle ride, which benefits the Angela Spence Foundation for research and treatment of heart disease in young people. The event itself was very well attended and quite successful and continues tomorrow. There were many quality vendors, purveying motorcycle articles and information. There were also events all day of interest to the motorcycle folks.
.
The cooks who turned out for the event were rewarded with enthusiastic sampling of their People's Choice chili. They were also rewarded financially for their competition efforts. Jan is giving serious consideration to changing the date of next year's cookoff to make it more enticing to the competitors. We're with you, Jan. This is one that deserves to continue!
.
And the winners were:
.
Salsa (7 entries):
2nd, Tony Angotti
1st, Red Brecke (local boy makes good)
.
Chili Verde only had one entry, Sachiko Brecke. However, Jan awarded the $250 first place prize money and trophy to Sachiko in appreciation for her efforts in cooking and serving to the public her excellent Chili Verde!
.
Traditional Red Chili (7 entries):
3rd, Bob Poston (another local boy)
2nd, Fujiko Poston (and a local girl)
1st, Don Hammes---going to the World on Double Districts and completing his Hat Trick; about time, Don! How many second place finishes?
.
.
.
We now have 41 Hat Trick WINNERS - a New Record
.

WV State Cookoff results

ChiliFest, the WV State Chili Championship.
Our cookoff was held on Saturday, Sept. 16th on a beautiful day that started
out foggy and ended sunny. The crowd was overflowing the streets of
downtown Huntington in the newly developed Pullman Square area. Crowd
estimate was over 25,000 and People's Choice teams were keeping the people
supplied with copious amounts of chili. Chili sample tickets were sold for
50 cents and the proceeds benefited the Huntington Ronald McDonald House.
In chili samples we made over $16,000 (32,000 chili samples) for The House
and the raffle for the NASCAR Dream Vacation netted another $16,000 to raise
a total of over $32,000 for the day!! That's what cookoffs are about.
.
Bob Hall was the chief judge and as always did an outstanding job. Chili
Willi's provided staff to help with the judges tent and give Bob all the
scorekeeping help he needed. An outstanding group of judges helped to pick
Salsa, Chili Verde, and ICS Red Chili along with People's Choice and
Showmanship/Booth awards. My thanks to all the folks who worked hard to
make this year's ChiliFest in downtown Huntington a great success.
.

.

MISSISSIPPI STATE CHAMPIONSHIP CHILI COOKOFF - Oct 21, 2006

Hello there from the Magnolia state!

.

On behalf of Richland Historical Society I extend to you a joyous welcome to the FIRST ANNUAL MISSISSIPPI STATE CHAMPIONSHIP CHILE COOKOFF! Winning this event will qualify you for the 2007 World's Championship Chili Cookoff.

.

The cookoff will take place in Eastside Park here in Richland. We will be cooking on grass, and you will be given a space to set up your cooking area. We will provide tables and chairs but it is recommended that you bring your own covering, cooking supplies, etc. A water hose will be provided for cleanup.

.

For those with motor homes, we suggest that you arrive Friday afternoon in order to obtain parking spaces close to the cooking area. The gates to the park are closed at 10:00 PM and security will be provided.

.

If we have ten or more people requesting rooms at the Super 8 Motel which is within walking distance of the park, a discount on the room charge will be provided.

.

Several fast food restaurants are conveniently located nearby.

The gates to the park will be opened at 8:00 AM Saturday morning to allow cookoff participants and vendors to set up.

.

May we suggest that you bring clothing suitable for not only hot weather but also for cold (just to be safe). This time of the year here in Mississippi you can be burning up today and freezing tomorrow.

.

We will have tasting cups and spoons for you to serve your chili and salsa to the public.

.

This will be a fundraising event for us so if you can, we would appreciate any extra chili you can donate for us to sell.

.

DIRECTIONS: TURN EAST OFF HIGHWAY 49 ONTO HARPER STREET; WAL-MART WILL BE ON YOUR RIGHT. GO PAST WAL-MART A VERY SHORT DISTANCE TO THE NEXT DRIVEWAY TO THE RIGHT AND THAT WILL BE EASTSIDE PARK. THE GATES WILL IDENTIFY THE ENTRANCE.

.

We are very excited about hosting this event and will do our best to make you feel welcome because we want you to enjoy yourself and also to come back next year!

.

If you are interested, you might want to travel about 45 miles west of Jackson to Vicksburg, Mississippi, known as the Gibraltar of the South during the late unpleasantness 1861-1865. Not only is Vicksburg noted for its history, it's also noted for the RIVERBOAT CASINO'S floating on the river.

.

Also if you're interested, there's our new BASS PRO SHOP about five miles away.

.

Check us out on the ICS web page!

Joe DeFrates Memorial Regional
Sept. 24
Springfield, IL.
Joe DeFrates Memorial Regional
Ansar Shrine Center
The fourth annual Joe DeFrates Regional Chilli Cookoff was again held at the Ansar Shrine Center in Springfield, IL. and brought to you by the Ansar Shrine Patrol.
Leo Stork (Chairman) and the many volunteers to the Shrine Patrol do an excellent job of hosting this event.
They all go all out for the chilli cooks with free food and drinks all day long as well as very good prize monies for the contest winners.
They all work very hard at obtaining different sponsorships for the cookoff. All proceeds from this event goes to the Ansar Shrine Patrol and the Shriners Children's Hospital.
Final totals for the funds raised for the Hospital have not been completely totaled yet, but it is well into several thousands of dollars. This would not be possible without the hard work from Leo Stork and many of his Patrol members.
This event is held in honor of one of the Shrine Patrol's most famous members, Joe DeFrates.
Joe was not only famous for his Chilli in Springfield, but also throughout the country. Most of you remember that Joe is the only 2 time Champion to win both the International as well as the World's Championship.
Along with Joe's Chilli Company that he created, with the help of his Dad (Port), and his Uncle (Ray), he touched many lives and was always well respected for his gentleman like manner.
If you were ever graced by Joe's infectious smile or his soft gentle voice, you knew you had made a true friend forever.
It was a brisk cool day in Downtown Springfield which added to a perfect day for chilli.
Clouds and the threat of showers did not deter the chili cooks nor the over 900 Classic Cars in Downtown Springfield for the Route 66 Classic Car Show.
SALSA 10 contestants
8 judges
3rd = Kelly Wessing 6 pts (Farmersville, IL.)
2nd = Helen McCauly 7 pts (Springfield, IL.)
1st = Maureen Barrett 11 pts (Willow Springs, IL.)
CHILLI 22 contestants
19 judges
3rd = Linda Carroll 10 pts (Taylorville, IL.)
2nd = Jay Nicole 11 pts (Decatur, IL.)
1st = Tom Calvert 12 pts (Taylorville, IL.)
As you can see the judging was very close and all of the judges agreed it was very hard because all of the chili's were very...very good!
Tom not only walked off with $1,000 for his chilli win, he also completed his "Hat Trick"
Congratulation to all the contestants....They are all winners..
.
.
Trophies on Display
.
YOU CAN HELP MAKE THE 40TH MORE EXCITING!
.
We think that it would be great for as many of you as possible to bring your favorite chili trophy to Omaha and display it in your booth If it's a choice between your cooking pot and the trophy - never mind - bring the pot! Everyone loves a winner and since the ICS is made up of winners, let's show off those trophies. Past World's Champions, you might bring those WCCC winner's banners or big checks. We're hammin' it up in Omaha!

Ron Michel - by Joy Bilozir
Ron Michel of Calgary had an accident at work and his leg was badly broken. He had surgery to put a rod in on Saturday. Randy went to see him on Sunday evening and while he is in quite a bit of pain he is in good spirits. Unfortunately this means that he will not be able to compete at the Worlds. Randy and I will have a get well card to sign for him available at the Worlds.
