Message from Carol Hancock

NFL GOLF TOURNAMENT/CHILI COOKOFF

.

This event has NOT been canceled and everything is a go! The NFL website has all of the cooks names listed under Vendors By Hole on the NFL website - that's http://www.nflasd.com/. It's expected that the air will be mostly clear by Saturday, so hopefully on Monday, the only thing in the air will be the smell of chili!!

.

We would still like to find two additional cooks for this event. Since time is of the essence, if you're interested in participating in this special event with the NFL Alumni Association, please contact me directly at 949-375-3939. Thanks!

THANK YOU

California Wildfires

I just received an e-mail from Red Brecke. E-mail reads (Went to my place today everything is okay, no power looks like it's been off two or three days, one house lost just a few blocks away, I think we were very, very lucky, still many fires going on, however not close to us).

.

That is really great news.

.

I have not heard if any of our other chili cooks are having a problem with the fires. If anybody has heard anything about one of our cooks please let us know ASAP.

Dave and I want to thank all of you who have called about our safety during the fires. We've received four emergency 911 reverse calls for evacuation, but have been able to stay put. Being threatened by fires on both sides of Coto de Caza has been unsettling, but today things are looking up.

Wannatouchama Regional

By Donnie Gordon

Another great job by the Rotary Club of Apple Valley. Tony and Donna Inglese have once again done their thing amazingly well. Tony announced that this cookoff has raised over $100,000 for the children in the area over the last five years. We all sincerely hope that this years funds will match those of previous years and continues to do so for many years to come.

The fun began on Friday night when cooks were invited to a delicious and free meal (and beer). Saturday morning they prepare a pancake breakfast, so the cooks and staff do not have to go hungry as we frequently do. We had 30 Red cooks, 13 Green and 14 Salsas competing and battling the wind. The judging tent again looked like World of recent years: Fred Wieland as Chief Judge and Leah Wieland as Chief Scorekeeper; Jim Maehl assisting Fred; with Donnie Gordon, Nicole Caimi and Edi Gumfudgin assisting Leah; Claude Covington as Emcee and Dirty Ole Phil, dubbed "Sleazy" by Fred as Chief Wrangler.

As Bob Plager called in the winners, I'll not repeat them. But there were a couple of announcements beside the money raised that may be of interest to all. Fred began the announcements by stating that he and Leah were not at World because they did not want to intimidate or interfere with David and Kathy in their efforts. If you consider that they have been a primary guidance and force at World for 20 years, you can understand the effort it must have taken for them to stay away and pass the baton freely. They will most likely fuss (an overly mild term) at me when they read this, but I personally think it was a very noble gesture on their part. The other announcement also concerns the Wielands. They are now formally retired as Chief Judge and Chief Scorekeeper. Notice the word Chief! They are not retired from helping out at cookoffs... just as Chiefs!Y ou can find them in Beatty next weekend and Laughlin in January. Jim Maehl and Donnie Gordon were announced as the Chiefs for this event next year.

It was a wonderful time had by all. Congratulations to the winners... and thanks to all the support staff for an amazing job.

Mississippi State

It is not too late to make plans for the Mississippi State ICS sanctioned Chili Cookoff.

The cookoff is held at Eastside Park in Richland, MS.

Richland is on the Southeast side of Jackson.

.

Linda Goff (Chairperson) has selected the Richland Historical Society as there Charity for the event. This is a family type cookoff in a beautiful park next to the Richland Community High School. There will be crafts, food games as well as lots of other entertainment.

.

Linda has secured rooms at the Super 8 Motel (2 blocks from the park) for $48 per night for a king bed. This is a special rate for chili cooks. Please let them know.

.

Jean Simmons and Cathy Schmedeke will be there again to defend their respective titles in Red and Salsa. We will be doing Red and Salsa. Hopefully, we will add Verde next year.

.

You can sign up by calling Linda at (601) 939-1656 or you can email her at LindaGoff@bellsouth.net

Or, you can go to the ICS web site and sign up there http://www.chilicookoff.com/

San Diego Wildfires

At 3:30 a.m. on Monday morning October 22 Red and Sachiko Brecke were evacuated from their home in San Diego due to the Santa Anna winds and fire condition. They were able to go to their daughters home in a safe area. I talked to Red last night on his cell phone they had no idea the condition of their home. He said they were woke up by sirens and police alerting them to evacuate immediately. He said he grabbed his fire insurance policy and hit the door. I received an e-mail from him this morning stating that the winds were starting to relax but he had no idea what the status of his house is or when they will be able to return. We can only hope for the best. Please keep him in your thoughts and be prepared to assist if necessary.

PS: We have many other ICS Chili Cooks and Families living in the San Diego and Los Angles area that we are checking on.

UTAH STATE Chili Championship

To the general membership of the ICS,

It was been brought to my attention that in the past as I have reported
the results of the Utah State Chili Championship I have been prone to
overstate the results.
.
I have been accused of falsehood, fabrication and fallacy.
.
It has been said that I am a teller of tall tales and whoppers
.
There are those of you think me a contactor of crap, a builder of
baloney and a plumber of pretense.
Some have inferred that I have committed libel, slander and perjury.
So to avoid any hint of myth, misconception, misinformation and
misrepresentation I offer the following;
Some people came to Utah for a chili cookoff.
They participated in all three ICS sanctioned events.
Some people won first place; some people didn't.
.
Respectfully submitted
Jeff Ray
.
Note No. 1
Weather.
It was not the best. We had rain, snow and wind.
The wind was only a mild aggravation for a short period. Mostly during
set-up. Rain, snow and ice pellets on and off during the day. Most of
the cooks put up sidewalls on their canopies and snuggled into their
cocoons of plastic and steel.
.
Note No. 2
Attendance.
Cooks from Arizona, Texas, Colorado, Idaho, Montana and Utah
participated.

Note No. 3

Note No. 4
Thanks.
Thanks very much to the folks at Wolf Creek for their sponsorship and
prize money. Due to inclement weather there was very little public
participation and not much money was raised for their charity.
Nevertheless they have invited us back for next year and we're on the
schedule for October 18, 2008.
.
Note No 5
Health Department
The nice lady from the Weber County Health Department made an
appearance and did pretty well until she got to the High Country Chili
Team area, run by Joe and Marilee Barrett.
At that point her whole life flashed before her and all was lost.
She asked Joe about a Food Handlers permit and before she left, the
snow where she had been standing was bright yellow, not white. She has
since entered a convent, taken a vow of silence and has enrolled in
several self-esteem classes.
.
On the other hand; it would be a wise idea for cooks to have a valid
Food Handlers permit issued from their home area. Granted one county or
state doesn't always recognize permits from another area, but it would
at least let health inspectors know, we as cooks are sensitive to
public safety. Just a suggestion
.
Note No. 6
Groans and Moans
Chili cooks are passionate about their creations. Why else would they
travel to the far-flung corners of North America and brave the elements
to brew their heavenly concoctions? Cooks emotions run high. There has
probably never been a perfect cookoff and this year's Utah State was no
different.
.
One chili cook, who was unhappy with comments on their judging sheet,
suggested that chili judges should be pre-screened and pre-qualified.

My usual slipshod and caviler method for choosing judges has been to
make sure that they could hold a spoon and sign their name on the
judging sheet.

Not so for next year. Utah State Chili Judges will be required to watch
40 consecutive hours of Food Network shows. Judges will be asked to
pronounce and spell the word "cumin." Prospective judges with poor
penmanship will be rejected. Proper grooming will also be a
requirement. Judges recommended by the sponsoring organization will
automatically be sent packing.

North Carolina State Championships

Chili festival winners named

A New Jersey man was named champion of Havelock's annual chili cook-off Saturday afternoon.
.
David Lorenz from southern New Jersey won first place in the International Chili Society-sanctioned cook-off during the Havelock Chili Festival and Big Boy Toy Show at Walter B. Jones Park.
.
His recipe, Duffy's Irish Chili, earned Lorenz a spot in the ICS' world championship chili cook-off in Omaha, Neb. He received a $1,000 prize, a trophy and a first-place plaque.
.
Richard Steinert won second place, Elizabeth Wilson claimed third, Alice Reed fourth and Smokey Colwell fifth in the chili cook-off.
.
In the Havelock Chili Festival salsa competition, Charles Ritchie earned top honors, followed by Deborah Siegel in second and Steinert in third.

Awards for Friday evening's chicken wing cook-off were announced with the chili and salsa awards Saturday. First place went to Butch Ipoc of Ham's Restaurant, with Gery Boucher earning second, Sue Arden winning third and Colwell taking fourth -- and a rubber chicken given as a gag prize.

Three competitor booth awards also were presented Saturday. Domino Ireland won for best showmanship and entertainment, Eddy Huffman won best overall and Wilson won best booth for marketing your business.
.
In its 27th year, the chili festival drew an estimated 25,000 people to Havelock on Saturday and about 3,000 for the chicken wing competition Friday night, organizers said.

Oct. 21, 2007 Silverado Days Regional Cookoff Results

The day started off very pleasant and everyone was looking forward to some great competitive cooking. The Buena Park Chamber of Commerce did a fantastic job organizing the cookoff. A special thank you to Gail Dixon and Denise Brewer for all their hard work.

.

Suddenly around 11:00 Mother Nature appeared with extremely high wind gusts which were blowing the large canopy tents off of the ground. It was unfortunately decided to cancel the red competition, however, we were able to complete the salsa and verde contests. Many thanks to all 15 red cooks who were eager to compete and advance to the 2008 WCCC. They handled the situation like true "Chili Heads."

Thanks as well to Mary Ellen Weber for helping with scorekeeping and Patricia and Armando Sanchez for assisting in the judging area (what was left of it!)

.

"Commander" Chuck Street, Southern California's most popular traffic reporter, was on hand during the day meeting and greeting everyone and announced the winners. And they were:

.

Salsa:

3rd place – Patricia Sanchez

2nd place – Chris Nicoll

1st place – Nibs Waters – qualifies for 2008 WCCC

.

Verde:

3rd place – Karen Angotti

2nd place – Nibs Waters

1st place – Don Hammes qualifies for 2008 WCCC

Again, many thanks to everyone.

Dennis and Allene Macklin
