River Resorts Regional - Submitted by Karen Ray
Hello, Chili Friends.
Next Saturday, November 18th, will be the 20th Annual Lost Lake Resort chili cookoff. It is well received by the cooks every year, and this year will be no exception. We are on the edge of nowhere, but everybody manages to find us. We have several pre-entries through the ICS web site, and there are plenty of red cooks to maintain our Regional and plenty of chili verde and salsa cooks for a legal contest.
Those of you who have been here know what goes on. If you have not come here before here is the story: Cooks and judges begin arriving with their campers, RVs, tents or whatever on Thursday (maybe earlier). Dry camping is free, and you can cook right at your "rig". Friday night everybody does their own thing, but there is lots of socializing around the firepits at the individual encampments. (Does this sound a bit like the World cookoffs at Tropico Gold Mine? Yeah, a little bit!)
Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m. we serve complimentary Bloody Marys, Mimosas, Screwdrivers and coffee to all interested parties. This is in honor of our departed friend, Ray Little, who started this tradition at this cookoff. At 8:00 a.m. breakfast is served to the cooks and judges---fruit cup (champagne optional), bacon, sausage links, potatoes O'Brien and biscuits and gravy. This is also complimentary.
Chief Judge is Tony Dalbis, Chief Scorekeeper is Donnie Gordon and Emcee is Steve Porter. People's Choice chili is requested but not required to benefit our personal charity, English Springer Rescue America. The People's Choice contest winner will receive 50% of the total sales of of tasting cups.
At the awards ceremony there will be a presentation to Bob Brown, the owner of the Resort, of a very special quilt, made by Marilee Barrett, in honor of the 20th Anniversary of this event. Bob has sponsored the cookoff every year out of his own pocket to accomodate the chili cooks and to provide entertainment for his Resort folks.
Come out and join us. This is a unique cookoff. If you are not an RVer, Parker, AZ is only about 20 minutes away and has accomodations to fit every pocketbook. We look forward to seeing you there. By the way, the weather reports promise temperatures in the high 70s during the day and around 50 at night!

Terlingua "Behind The Store/Tolbert" Results -
by Bob Plager (Prune Man)
The 40th Annual Original Tolbert Terlingua International Chili Championship (Behind The Store) is behind us now, just like the ICS's World Championship is for 2006. This years "party in the desert" was awesome and fun filled for all involved, especially for me, Bob Plager, since I won the Championship for the 3rd time in 11 years (yes, with PRUNES). In my delirium, I was quoted as saying, "3RD TIMES THE CHARM", and "VIVA LA PRUNES"!!!!
We had 11 cooks this year on ICS Hill (Truett Airhart - BBQ Aficionado (7th Place Ribs) & overall cook, Wes Carlson - 4th Place, Al Henry - 9th Place, Mick Joplin - 15th Place, Kathy Plager - 20th Place, Jim Stoddard - 21st Place, Ed "Doc" Pierczynski, Judy & Rick Omerza, Sue Schools, Dave Schulman, and myself Bob Plager. Sue Schools, Dave Schulman, Joey Sutphen, Nikki Hedrick, and Cecil Schmidt were 5 out of 41 competing in the Last Chance Cookoff on Thursday, but did not make it to the Top 3 to qualify. Many more ICS cooks were spread out down and over the hills from us, Gloria & Mike Stevens (Gloria placed 7th), Jim Hedrick (with daughter, Nikki), and Debbie Turner (with husband, Wayne/Gabby), and many more over at CASI, 5 miles up the road. For those ICS cooks who have never been down there, it's worth the trip at least once, to see where all this chili madness we all do, started 40 years ago. Heck, you might even come back year after year, like many of us chiliheads do.
BBQ wings, ribs, brisket, black eyed peas, and beans (Gloria Stevens placed 9th) were cooked and turned in on Friday, as well as a Margarita mixoff on Friday night. Several of us competed in those contests and several of us competed in turning in Salsa at CASI. Judy Omerza (ICS 2003 Salsa Champ) placed 10th in Salsa at CASI. The Omerza's were the "rookie" cooks this year in our camp. We were also blessed with the presence of Ginny Carlson and Mick's girlfriend, Gina (who will be joining ICS for 2007 competition).
At CASI, it was a who's who of ICS cooks that placed in chili, with Bo Prewitt - 3rd Place, Georgia Weller- 5th Place, Bruce Jones - 7th Place, Jim Weller - 13th Place, Dan Bauer - 15th Place, Cindy Reed Wilkins - 18th Place.
It was really nice seeing my buddy, Dick Swenberger, back this year (thanks for helping on score keeping with me on all the Friday events), as well as seeing Roger Koltz, Dan & Janie Bauer judging BBQ ribs and brisket.
There are truly too many other people to actually list this year who were there . It just goes to show, that chili cooks are chili cooks, whatever "political" affiliation they are (appropriate for today's elections?). I just want to personally thank ALL of the cooks who joined us in the "middle of nowhere" to cook chili this year.

MONDAY - November 6, 2006

Chiliblast - Florida State; November 4, 2006

On a beautiful (albeit a bit windy) day in Clearwater, on the West Coast (of Florida, for non-Floridians), the 2006 Chiliblast took place at Coachman Park. A great event and a “cooks’ cookoff” in every respect.

..

The first Florida “qualifier” in the 2007 chili season drew over fifty superb cooks from five states; multiple 2006 WCCC qualifiers, to include three 2006 “Hat Trick” winners and four (4) cooks from each of both the Verde and the Traditional Red 2006 WCCC Finals Tables. Those numbers, among many other facts, speak volumes for the high esteem in which Chairman Doug Roy’s (and the “real power behind the throne” – his lovely bride Carolyn) Florida State Championship is held among ICS members…a highly merited esteem, re-earned by this year’s event.

.

Now for the results:

.

Best Booth

2nd Place: “Thunder and Mud Chili” – Will Johnston, Head cook

1st Place: “Colorado Cowboy Chili” – Chris Everhart, Head cook

.

Salsa (30 cooks)

Finals Table: Randy Gilchrist, Reyna Martin, Ron Dahlgren, Marilyn Frederick, Mike Prejean, Don Stuewe, Kurt Rolf, Scott Barrett, Ray Lampe, Ryan Kistner

5th Place: Don Stuewe

4th Place: Ray Lampe

3rd Place: Marilyn Fredrick

2nd Place: Scott Barrett

1st Place: Ron Dahlgren (will represent Chiliblast at the 2007 WCCC)

.

Verde (17 cooks)

3rd Place: Bob Hall

2nd Place: Pam Nelson

1st Place: Marilyn Fredrick (will represent Chiliblast at the 2007 WCCC)

.

Red (51 cooks)

Finals Table: Tim McAfee, Reyna Martin, Ron Dahlgren, Jake White, Larry Hines, Dave Lorenz, Tim Nunn, Ken Burke, Clara Ann Bailey-Spice, John Gicking, Ryan Kistner, Glen Hill, Bradley Boyden, Scott Sprouse, Terry Smith, Doug Smith, Robert Simpson, Steve Tomasek

5th Place: Terry Smith

4th Place: Dave Lorenz

3rd Place: Glen Hill

2nd Place: Steve Tomasek

1st Place: Scott Sprouse (will represent Chiliblast at the 2007 WCCC)

.

In every respect, a great event at a beautiful waterside setting (Intercoastal Waterway). Maximum kudos and “attaboys” to the city of Clearwater, the volunteers and especially, Doug and Carolyn for a superb job.

Sergei Kowalchik

Chief Judge

SUNDAY - November 5, 2006

Please pray for Gail Donovan's recovery
Dear Chili friends,
Please keep Gail in your prayers. She was involved in a bizarre almost fatal accident on Halloween. It happened when the whole family was getting set up in our drive way getting ready for our annual Halloween chili party. Our grandson Matthew was two feet to Gail's left and our other grandson Joshua was directly behind Gail when literally out of nowhere an at least 10 point buck came barreling down our drive way, sliding sideways and on it's belly, antlers and hoofs flailing and with 250 pounds of buck sliding out of control on our rain slicked driveway literally took Gail out. It must have been spooked by all of the trick or treaters in the neighborhood and barreled out of the woods and lost control on the wet pavement. No one can believe what happened right in front of them . Gail had to be told what happened to her. We are so grateful to God that our other family members were not impaled by the antlers when the buck got up and started it's flight. Gail is home with a concussion and severe neck, back and emotional trauma. Talk about a freak accident...
Please pray for her full recovery.
Thanks
Bill "Gumby" Donovan

HARVEST FAIR REGIONAL
Over the last ten years, this cookoff has had bad weather (rain, wind) and good weather, but never better weather than today. Cool in the morning, temperatures reached the low 80s in the afternoon. The Harvest Fair is an Old West encampment on the grounds of the C.I.D. (Center for Individual Development). Tents are the featured bedrooms, along with a teepee or two. Boots, hats and guns are the favored dress of the men, with ladies preferring lace and bustles for their attire. There are Indians in full regalia and demonstrations of Old Western crafts and skills. The Harvest Fair has been named as "one of the best Western shows in America" by American Cowboy Magazine.

From a small beginning in 1996 the chili cookoff has grown in popularity, both with the chili cooks and with the Old West participants. In 2005 the cookoff achieved Regional status, which continues to be justified by the number of chili participants. From selling a few tasting kits for sampling the competition chili, today's chili-hungry fans purchased almost 300 tasting kits for a total donation of $870.00!! The C.I.D. is a recreation and development center for disabled citizens of any age, so the donations are for an excellent cause.

An astute panel of judges ranging from experienced to first-time labored over their choices. There were two ties in the salsa contest, one tie in the chili verde contest and one tie in the traditional red contest. And the winners were:

Salsa (14 entries):
3rd, Allene Macklin (won tie)
2nd, Charlie Blosfield
1st, Armando Sanchez (won tie)

Chili Verde (13 entries):
3rd, Karen Angotti (won tie)
2nd, Tom Clarke
1st, Allene Macklin

People's Choice Chili (Everyone):
3rd, Gene Wheat
2nd, Russell Barnes
1st, Geraldine Villalpando (We're starting to see Geraldine's name a lot; she did very well at Apple Valley a couple of weeks ago!)

Traditional Red Chili (25 entries):
4th, Armondo Sanchez
3rd, Susie Baumberger (won tie)
2nd, Mike Ford
1st, Don Hammes---2nd place no more!
