CAL CITY REGIONAL CHILI COOKOFF:TIME TO CIRCLE WAGONS

Once again March 28, 2009 is approaching fast and this means it will be time to circle the wagons. Friday afternoon will be the stew challenge which will also be dinner for all in attendance providing that Dirty Ole Phil gets enough contestants. So if you would like to impress us all with your culinary talents please let Phil know ASAP of your intentions. I will be eagerly waiting with fork in hand and bib around the neck to see who is going to be the Grand Kahuna of stewdum! Saturday morning means chili and firing up your pot for a chance to advance to The World's Championship Chili Cookoff to be held at in October. We have plenty of room for RVs dry camping on clean dirt. So if you are planning to bring your RV please let me know ASAP so we can reserve you a good spot. And remember those of you who do not have RVs and will be cooking, you will be able to cook right out of your vehicle on the clean dirt. This cookoff helps support the American Legion of California City which is dedicated to helping all of us veterans. There will be music provided by a disk jockey also raffles and of course the beer belly contest (which I'm still trying to work up too) and of course shoot and holler. The Notorious UGHLEE and world champion shoot and holler winner will be the Emcee. There is usually plenty of wildlife to see Dirty Ole Phil moving faster than normal, coyote serenading you at night and also the occasional bunny rabbit. After all Easter is almost upon us! So if you want to have a

supercalifragilisticexpialidociously amazing and unique time, BE THERE!

My dream Photo Assignment will be to document how Native Americans across the entire United States and Canada on and off reservations hold on to their culture, beliefs, and identity in the 21st century.

FIRST RHODE ISLAND STATE CHILI COOKOFF

.

Dear Chili Cooks,

The First Rhode Island State Chili Cookoff is now officially in the history books! Rhode Island was the final state in the U.S. to have an ICS sanctioned Chili Cookoff!
Despite all the pre cookoff trials and tribulations, the day really went off without so much as a hiccup.

.

Some fast facts;

Cooks from 13 different states (CT,MA,MD,NJ,NY,PA,RI,OH,IL,MI,TX,VA and NH) and from 2 countries.

Four former ICS Red Champions, Jim Weller, Georgia Weller, Steve Falkowski, Jerry Buma & the 2008 ICS Red Chili Champion, Georgia Weller

Two former ICS Chili Verde Champions, Wes Carlson and Kimberly Mallory and the 2008 ICS Chili Verde Champion, Lauren Ray

One former ICS Salsa Champion, Judi Omerza

One cook completed the daunting task of cooking ICS Chili in 50 of the U.S. States, Wes Carlson

Four rookie cooks that caught the "chili bug" and enjoyed themselves so much, we know we will see them again!

.

Judging and Score Keeping was handled by Steve and Audrey Falkowski with assistance from CT State Chairperson, Sharon Willard, Soldiers Angels District Co-Chair Judy Lee and Kat Freedman.

.

This was one of those cook off's where all of the ICS cooks pitched in and went with the flow. A great time was had by all. Cooks enjoyed music, pulled pork sandwiches from BT (BT's Smokehouse), and beautiful trophies supplied by Kimberly and David Mallory and of course, the best salsa and chili!

.

Kat and I couldn't have accomplished this without the help of so many people. We have to thank Carol Hancock & Vickie,The Falkowski's, The Mallory's, BJ's Wholesale, Jim McGinn (K of C), and most of all, the great cooks that assisted us, as only ICS cooks can.

.

On to the winners:

Salsa:

3rd place - Vicki Tankis (Rookie) MA

2nd place - Mario (Batali) Sacciccio CT

1st Place Salsa winner representing Rhode Island at the World Championship Jim Heywood NY

.

Chili Verde:

2nd place - Ghon Eckley MD arrived at 7 a.m. and flew out at 6 p.m.

.

Like we always say, if you're cooking chili with your friends, you're already a winner!

We will see you next year at the Providence (RI) Convention Center, 2-13-10, for the St. Valentine's Chili Massacre/2nd Annual RI State Chili Cookoff.

.

The next cookoff in New England is May 2, 2009,The New England Regional, Somers, CT.

WE NEED CHILI COOKS, IF YOU ARE PLANNING ON COMING TO AHWATUKEE FOR THE BACK-2-BACK CHILI COOKOFFS – CALL SUSAN TODAY. - AT THIS POINT IN TIME WE ONLY HAVE SEVEN(7) RED COOKS SIGNED UP !!

.

I hope everyone is doing well and in the mood to cook some chili!! We are hosting the Back to Back Copperstate Regional and Valley of the Sun Regional cook offs again this year on March 14 and 15th in our lovely Ahwatukee Park. We will again have security on site Saturday night so cooks can leave their tents and belongings instead of packing it all up and setting up again. What a deal!!! Entry fees are $35 for Red, $25 for Green, and $15 for Salsa. If you need tables, chairs or canopies they are available for rent. A table plus 2 chairs is $10 and a canopy is $15 for a two-day rental

.

This year we are adding more attractions for Saturday and Sunday such as amusement rides for the kids, pizza, mexican food, brats, two great bands and BEER and WINE during the event. The Farmer's Market will join the event on Sunday.

.

As far as lodging, I just spoke with a representative from Extended Stay American (1.22 miles from our location) and she gave us a great, great, deal especially during this peak season. This is a 1 bedroom suite with a kitchen for only $56.99 per night. This is a terrific deal. It is a nice, clean hotel and very close to our facility. To get this deal you need to book before February 14 and tell the booking agent that you are with the International Chili Society. She has blocked off 20 rooms as of today. Their address is 14245 S. 50th St., Phoenix, AZ 85044 and phone number is 480-785-0464. If you have any problems with the reservation, ask to speak with Milijana. She is the one I spoke with about this group rate.

.

I look forward to seeing everyone back this year!! You guys are a FUN GROUP.

.

Please do not hesitate to call or email me with any questions. Please pass this information on to anyone you might think would be interested in our cook offs.

.

Have a great day!!!!
