GDV Jaycees N. Sioux City Daze 4th annual chili cook-off a big success.

The GDV Jaycees partnered with Beano and Sherry’s casinos in N. Sioux City to have their most successful cook-off to date. Thanks to all of the cooks and everyone who attended we were able to raise $1100.00 towards a new library in N. Sioux City. The weather was beautiful and lasted the whole day. The cook-off finished with a jalapeno eating contest, shoot-n-holler and a casino crawl.

.

There were 13 entries in salsa with the winners being

3rd – Beeg Juan Wright,

2nd – Mark Johnson,

1st – Julie Harley.

.

There were 11 entries for chili verde with the winners being

3rd – Bill Dudzik,

2nd – Curt Ewinger,

1st – Paul Kaardal.

.

The best part was that the cook-off had 20 entries for the red category to enable it to qualify for regional status in 2007. 11 of these cooks had not cooked at this cook-off previously but word had spread that N. Sioux City throws a good party.

The winners of red were

3rd – Walt Frankenberger,

2nd – Greg Virant,

1st – Sue Dudzik.

.

For those of you keeping track that is 4 in a row for Sue at N. Sioux City, can anyone knock her off of her throne? Thank you to all the cooks and everyone that helped to make 2006 a great success.

Sharon Willard Info:

Chili friends,
Sharon Willard (the CT.State Cookoff organizer) called me this morning to tell me that the surgery yesterday was a success! She told me the cancer did not spread to her lymph nodes which is a good thing. She starts chemo very soon and as she said, she'll probably still be doing it when the CT. State cookoff happens.
She also asked me to relay to all of her chili cook friends and the other organizers a BIG hug for the outpouring of love, comfort and support she has received!
I also have a discount for hotel rooms for the CT. State cookoff (9-16-06) The hotel is less than 2 miles from the cookoff and is the closest hotel to the cookoff. If anyone needs it, please eme at madmike@peoplepc.com and if you need any other info I will help as much as I can!
Be well....and from Sharon (Kat and I) .."Thank you"!!
Stay HOT!!!
Mad Mike

Windy City Regional Results
Three winners in Salsa, Chile Verde, Red Chili were selected to represent Chicago at the WCCC in Omaha this year. Saturday was warm, but overcast skies and a refreshing Lake Michigan breeze helped to make it almost an ideal day to cook chili. The crowd of 150 samplers must have agreed as well since the chili supply was exhausted in 45 minutes. And the cooks really showed their stuff as many made extra chili, along with their turn-in chili, to help feed the hungry throng. The cooks came from Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Ohio to join our local cooks in a strong showing of chili diversity. Four new cooks joined the ICS fold on Saturday as well. I would like to thank our sponsors: Chicago Cutlery for their financial support as well as the knives they supplied in the goodie bag, Redmonds Bar & Grill for entering their Head Cook as a contestant and helping with the prize money, Glazed Expressions who creates our unique trophies, and La Mora restaurant where the judging takes place. My great thanks and appreciation also go out to Wes and Ginny Carlson as Head Judge and scorekeeper who make running this cookoff easy. Special thanks to Nancy Usiak for taking care of the registration, wranglering, and taking care of all the last minute problems that arise. The Food Pantry of St. Teresa of Avila also especially appreciates the efforts of the cooks, judges and spectators in raising enough money to feed 50 families for a month.
Now for the winners:
Salsa:(10 entries)
Honorable mention: Capt. Duke Collins of the Elmwood Park F.D.
1st place: Kevin Christianson - Hartford WI
.
Chile Verde (10 entries)
3rd: Mike Stevens - Homer Glen IL
2nd: Jose Torres - Orland Park IL
Champion: Loretta Torres - Orland Park IL
.
Red (24 entries)
3rd: Pat Gustafson - Chicago IL
2nd: Gail Donovan - Cincinnati OH
Champion: Ton Heiser - Madison WI
.
The State of Illinois was certainly the center of the Chili World this weekend with over 60 cooks participating in Chicago and Decatur..

Heartland Regional 2006 Results

Another typical August day in the Midwest – hot and a little muggy with slight wind. Located in downtown Decatur IL as a part of Decatur Celebration the cooks were entertained by Prairie Fire band all day. Good crowds mingled all day and the cooks had their choice of 67 different food vendors if they got tired of chili, or they could watch many of the other bands playing during the day. The Heartland was fortunate to again this year have the sponsorship of Ray’s Chilli, a local favorite, thanks to its owner Jay Nicole. As usual, Jay not only sponsors, but is always there to lend a helping hand in organizing, judging , or whatever is needed. Springfield Television station WICS was also a sponsor, not only providing financial support but putting us on the air and doing live interviews. The competition was tough, featuring several ties, but Julie Netser won out, featuring a day when the ladies completed a sweep of all categories. Congratulations top all the contestants. Malibu Kiwanis Chili Cookoff

Okay all you Chiliheads out there that haven't qualified for the World yet, here is your chance. The Malibu Cookoff back to back regionals will be held over Labor Day weekend, Saturday, September 2, and Sunday, September 3. Which give you Friday and Monday for traveling. There have been some problems with this cookoff, but we have been working with Dana Karney to try to straighten them out. She says that she has come up with solutions, so we will see. Dana is a great Chairperson to work with and always willing to try to change things with the powers that be.
These cookoffs have some great prize money $1000.00, $500.00, $250.00. The same for both days, so if you don't make it on Saturday you can try again on Sunday.
I would love to see everyone who is not qualified come out and support this cookoff, (this is their 25th Anniversary), so it has been around for a long time.
If you can cook,
send Dana an email letting her know sdk0825@aol.com ,
or you can let me know at chiliahr@veawb.coop .
I hope to see all our friends there.

Massachusetts State Chili Championship

After a week of record breaking high temps in the northeast, we got a very nice break in the weather for the Massachusetts State Chili Championship in Winchendon, MA. The skies were a rich blue and the clouds were enough to give us some relief from the warm sun. Best of all, the humidity was wonderfully low, making Saturday one of the top ten best days.

As always, the Kiwanis, this time helped by the Masons, put on a great event. They kept all the cooks supplied with serving cups and spoons with the help of the Boy Scouts. The band they have each year was back, another crowd and cook favorite.

We had some pretty good competition in all the categories. We had to break ties in almost every category.

Salsa: there were 15 entries

5th - Don Ouellette, NH

4th - Scott Navaroli, MA

3rd - Dave Lorenz, NJ (lost tie breaker)

2nd – Jim Heywood, NY

1st – Lee Wood, MA

.

Chili Verde: There were 12 entries

5th – Dick Dowling, CT

4th - Joe Harvey, MA

3rd - Mike Kropp, NH (lost tie breaker)

2nd – Dave Lorenz, NJ

1st – Mary Alice Kropp, NH (Who couldn’t stop beaming because she beat Mike)

.

Red Chili: there were 19 entries

5th – Rich Omerza, PA (lost the tie breaker)

4th – Roger Koltz, VA (came via Maine, where he was visiting family)

3rd – Jim Heywood, NY

2nd – Justin Schulman

1st – Kathy Freedman (Kathy blew the field away with 24 points, 11 more than the second place finisher)

This is Kathy’s second trip to the World Championships.

Thanks to Bruce and Jess of the Kiwanis. This was the 14th year for this cookoff. Always a cook and crowd favorite.
