Massachusetts State Chili Championship

After a week of record breaking high temps in the northeast, we got a very nice break in the weather for the Massachusetts State Chili Championship in Winchendon, MA. The skies were a rich blue and the clouds were enough to give us some relief from the warm sun. Best of all, the humidity was wonderfully low, making Saturday one of the top ten best days.

As always, the Kiwanis, this time helped by the Masons, put on a great event. They kept all the cooks supplied with serving cups and spoons with the help of the Boy Scouts. The band they have each year was back, another crowd and cook favorite.

We had some pretty good competition in all the categories. We had to break ties in almost every category.

Salsa: there were 15 entries

5^th - Don Ouellette, NH

4^th - Scott Navaroli, MA

3^rd - Dave Lorenz, NJ (lost tie breaker)

2^nd – Jim Heywood, NY

1^st – Lee Wood, MA

Chili Verde: There were 12 entries

5^th – Dick Dowling, CT

4^th - Joe Harvey, MA

3^rd - Mike Kropp, NH (lost tie breaker)

2^nd – Dave Lorenz, NJ

1^st – Mary Alice Kropp, NH (Who couldn’t stop beaming because she beat Mike)

Red Chili: there were 19 entries

5^th – Rich Omerza, PA (lost the tie breaker)

4^th – Roger Koltz, VA (came via Maine, where he was visiting family)

3^rd – Jim Heywood, NY

2^nd – Justin Schulman

1^st – Kathy Freedman (Kathy blew the field away with 24 points, 11 more than the second place finisher)

This is Kathy’s second trip to the World Championships.

Thanks to Bruce and Jess of the Kiwanis. This was the 14^th year for this cookoff. Always a cook and crowd favorite.

WESTERN REGIONAL AT DEL MAR--CLAUDE COVINGTON

Date: Saturday, August 12,2006

Cooks coming to Del Mar this weekend that haven't registered are probably too late to receive parking passes in the mail. Setup stars at 7:00A.M. Proceed to the west gate entrance, enter and turn left through the tunnel.
