Smoke on the Water, Charleston, WV

June 20, 2009

.

The riverfront in West Virginia's capital city was the=2 0setting for the 11th annual Smoke on the Water. An early threat of rain blew away, literally borne off by a brisk breeze that lasted all day. While the wind didn't do much to alleviate the warm temperatures, it did make things interesting at times with respect to keeping tents on the ground.

.

Things got rolling with the news that Charleston will be the site of the World's Championship Chili Cookoff this fall. Everyone then settled down to the business of chili: 68 total cooks, with 55 in red, 29 in verde and 21 in salsa.

.

Dan Bauer of Alexandria, Va., took top honors in red, earning a prize of $7,500. Other winners were:

.

Red – Jim Neves, Troy, Ohio, second place; Larry Lentz, Nicholasville, Ky., third place.

.

Verde – Jim Neves, Troy, Ohio, first place ($1,200 prize); Kevin Simmons, Milton, W.Va., second place.

.

Salsa – Gail Donovan, Cincinnati, Ohio, first place ($200 prize); Jerry Workman, Charleston, W.Va., second place.

.

People's Choice and Best Booth – John Mullins, Charleston, W.Va.

.

The event brought in $8,000 for HospiceCare Inc. Another $1,500 was raised through the cookoff's Run for Your Life 5-mile race for colorectal cancer awareness and screening through the Charleston Area Medical Center Foundation.

.

See you in October at the World's Championship Chili Cookoff!

From CHUCK HOFF

Hey Chili Cooks...Kit and I have done a lot of chili cooking in WV especially in Charleston. If anyone has any questions about Charleston or the area please feel free to ask us about anything you like. We live in Columbus, OH and Charleston is only 157 miles SE of Columbus. The weather for the World in October in Charleston should be similar to what we had in Omaha. The fall colors should be bloom and it should be beautiful site along the Kanawha River. As far as shopping goes they have a Wal-Mart and several Kroger stores, however, they don't have a Costco. So feel free to ask anything you like and we'll try and give you an answer. I think you'll be surprised about the area, you may just end up liking it. OH, BTW the people in Charleston are going to remind you lot like the people in Omaha.

Main Street Tehachapi Cookoff

The 2nd Annual Main Street Tehachapi Cookoff was a huge success. The weather was beautiful - low 80's. The dreaded wind that could have arrived earlier, didn't appear until later in the afternoon. It kicked up pretty strong, but nothing the cooks couldn't handle.

There were 20 Red, 11 Verde and 11 Salsa contestants this year. Thank you to all cooks who came out to support this fairly new event. It has grown - the crowd was bigger than last year thanks to all the advertising. Michelle has promised us to make it even better next year!! So mark it on your calanders; It is a really great event. Don't miss out on a great event!!!

The judging area was inside the Moose Lodge this year.. Thank you to them for this!! They provided the judges with the beer and water, and the air conditioning. It was appreciated by all.

Special thanks for my scorekeeping helpers--Karen Ray, Sylvia and Barry Steinberg. Karen helped me with the Salsa as Barry was a contestant.

SPECIAL thank goes to Dirty Ole Phil...without his help, there wouldn't be water or beer on the tables!! THANK YOU!!!!!

Sangamon County Fair Regional

New Berlin IL.

Sat. June 20, 2009

The 9th Annual Sangamon County Fair Regional was again another fun event with some very good chili competitors as well as some relatively newer member talking most of the GOLD.

.

Typical early summer in the Midwest--------hot and humid! Actually with a slight breeze coming through the covered pavilion on the fair grounds, it was not too bad.

Thunder storms the night before had made the grounds wet and humid, but with the hard work of the very capable Fair Board members and Directors, they had everything cleaned up and spiffed up for the chili cooks as they were arriving.

I've been very fortunate to work with the former Fair Board President, Gene Bergsnieder, and the rest of the Board member for the last 9 years to put on this cookoff. Gene is one of the nicest person that you would ever want to be associated with......Thank You Gene.

We have passed the reins of the cookoff to two very capable and great people in Lloyd Weir (Chairman) and his wife Brenda (Chief Scorekeeper) for this and the following years.

This was Lloyd and Brenda first year to run the cookoff by themselves and what an outstanding job they did.

All of the cooks that were there can attest to that.

Not only are Lloyd and Brenda very good chili cooks, they make Great Chairpersons.

While several cookoffs are somewhat down in numbers, this cookoff seems to hold its own in number of contestants and public attendance.

The Sangamon County Fair is one of the nicest and largest County Fairs in Illinois.

Thank You Chili Cooks for your support and also your continued support for Lloyd and Brenda.

.

SALSA 9 contestants

9 judges

.

.

VERDE 10 contestants

12 judges

.

4th = HM - Helen McCauley 11 pts (Springfield, IL.)

4th = HM - Les Eastep 11 pts (Springfield, IL.)

3rd = Chris Toney 12 pts (St Louis, MO.)

2nd = Dave Schmitt 14 pts (Springfield, IL.)

14 judges

.

3rd = Joni Deere 8 pts (Pana, IL.)

2nd = Tina Kruse 9 pts (Taylorville, IL.)

.

Each one of the winners in each of the contest are first time qualifiers in their respective contest.

While Don and Tina are first time qualifiers ever, Carolyn has qualified in Red earlier this year at Forsyth, IL.

This was Carolyns second time to cook chili Verde !!!

Needless to say they were all a bunch of happy chili cooks.

.

Congratulations to all the contestants.........They are all winners.
