Please be sure to get correct information out there to your cooks! We're seeing on some flyers that the membership fees do not reflect the increase made in December – they are now $50.

Have even seen reference to semi finals on some – that is wrong information – we have not had that in many years!

If you don't know what to put on the flyer in regard to the date/venue for the WCCC, keep it simple – just putting that it will be held in the fall will do. You, as chairmen, are responsible for what the cooks need to know and for any difference in membership fees if cooks are paying the old fee.

Silver State Regional

There have been numerous questions about People's Choice Chili at Silver State Regional. I talked to the sponsors (Sonrisa Grill) and YES, we will have People's Choice competition... 1st Place $200, 2nd Place $100 and 3rd Place $50. The judging area has a kitchen which has been approved by the Health Department for washing dishes. Still working on accommodations.

There's gonna be some great country bands competing to open for a Tommy Cash concert in October, a beer fest and soda pop competion, and lots of food and fun. For the chili cooks bringing an RV, someone will be there to direct you. There is a Farmer Boys restaurant within walking distance.

Proceeds go to the Murrieta Chamber and the Musicians workshop. We need cooks to make this a success so it can continue.

Silver State Regional Chili Championship

As the Chairperson of the June 6th. 2009 Silver State Regional Chili Championship (SSRCC), I am happy to announce our new location for this World's qualifying cookoff.

.

The SSRCC will be at the MonteLago Village located at Lake Las Vegas in Henderson NV

and is only a quick 25-minute drive from the Las Vegas Strip.

.

I know it is very short notice to post this cookoff but I hope some of you chiliheads who have not qualified for the WCCC 2009 yet, will help us keep this event active and it is your chance to win this one.

The following is a description on how to get there. Sacramento Regional Chili Cookoff May 16, 2009

Ok, the cookoff is a week and a half away and it keeps getting better. Hey chili cooks, we have a Pancake Breakfast from 7am to 11am, Arts and Crafts vendors with all sorts of well Arts and Crafts, a Silent Auction with all sorts of fun stuff to bid on. Music all day long, a Beer Garden, RV spaces for $20 and a Kids area where Kids can do crafts and play games. Whats left? Oh, did I say last week "All we need is dancing girls?" Well, we have dancing girls!! The "Galena Street East Performance of Dance" will put on a great performance for all. Wow, all this and the best ICS cooks in the west.

All proceeds benefit the Kiwanis Family House, Sacramento.

The Wyoming State cookoff is back, and coupled with the venerable Mile High Regional Cookoff for a double opportunity to qualify for the World Championships. We have space for all cooks on the "Historic Cheyenne Depot Plaza" and close-in parking for cooks. Cooks can fly into Denver and drive to Cheyenne (about 90 minutes north on I-25) or fly into Cheyenne.

.

The Mile High Regional will be on Friday, June 12 and will have special times. Set-up starts at noon and the Cooks' meeting will be at 1:30 P.M. Turn-in times will be: Salsa – 5:00 P.M.; Verde – 6:00 P.M.; Red – 7:00 P.M. Winners will be announced at the Cooks' party that starts at 8:00 P.M. in the Historic Plains Hotel.

The Wyoming State cook-off will be on Saturday. The Cooks' meeting will be at 10:30 A.M., with turn-in times of: Salsa – Noon; Verde – 2:00 P.M.; and Red – 3:00 P.M.

.

The people putting on this chili celebration are key players in putting-on the Cheyenne Frontier Days, so they really know how to put on a big party.

.

A block of rooms is held at The Historic Plains Hotel (just across the street from the cookoff site) for ICS Chili cooks at an incredible discounted rate of only $89.00 a night. For this exclusive rate, reservations must be made by May 30th . Call 1-866-2PLAINS or 307-638-3311 and mention "Chili Cheyenne weekend" or "Peppers on the Plaza" to get your special rate. After May 30th, the rooms will revert to the normal summer rates.

HomeGrown Folk Festival and Chili Cookoff

The First Homegrown Folk Festival and Chili Cookoff was a success. We are excited to think we have started a new cookoff for ICS and the Raintree Arts Council.

Lots of Crafts filled one of the buildings at Lincoln County Fair Grounds, in Troy, Mo.

The Chili Cookoff was held in the pic-nic area under cover with music and entertainment thru the day.

Cook count started small, only 7. But hey it's a cookoff. We celebrated.

We did not have enough for Salsa and Verde. but the Cooks cooked anyway and we awarded prizes to them for supplying chili for Sampling. Stained glass window hangings that were made by Three Monkey Beadery.

Heroes of Lawrence Chili Cookoff

On Sunday, June 7, 2009, the 2nd Annual Heroes of Lawrence Chili Cookoff and Music Festival again comes to Lawrence, Massachusetts in beautiful Pemberton Park. This event will benefit The Lawrence Rotary Foundation on behalf of Lawrence childhood education.

Headlining this event will be the fabulous "B Street Bombers" and from Hampton, NH, "Wicked Automatic". This event will have multiple competitions going on at the same time! The International Chili Society chili cookoff and Heroes of Lawrence Chili Cookoff, a car show, and a collection of local bands and The Royal Palace Dance Studio from Manchester, NH to provide all-day music and dancing entertainment.

This event is expected to draw thousands of people to enjoy a warm's summer's day eating delicious home-cooked chili and enjoying the competitive atmosphere between the experienced chiliheads of the International Chili Society and the "Heroes of Lawrence" - the police, fire, EMT's, and teachers in the Lawrence School system; all there to show off their stuff, walk away with the People's Choice grand prize, and benefit the Lawrence Rotary Foundation at the same time.

To top off the sun, food, and music, CapeAnn Brewing from Gloucester will be providing beer for responsible consumption.

MONDAY - May 4, 2009

California State Championship,

May 2nd

A beautiful mid-spring day greeted the participants in the 36th Annual California State Championship arriving at the new venue, the Orange Show grounds. (If all of my cookoff reports start out sounding like weather reports, it's probably because the weather is so important to the comfort and success of our events.) The old venue, Perris Hill Park, was great for many years, and many of us wondered if the Orange Show grounds would equal it. In fact, it did equal it---and more! The cookoff was on grass in a park-like setting, the centerpiece of which is a small lake embellished with fountains which periodically spray high into the air. The adjacent judging area was on a very large, pretty patio with a covered area used for the comfort and seclusion of the scorekeeping team.

The contestants for the many competitions held at this event were spread around the periphery of the lake, interspersed with vendors of many sorts. Vehicle access to the chili booths for loading in and out was available for everyone, and parking was nearby. Although an initial effort was made to separate the contestants into their respective categories, this was eventually abandoned for later arrivals. Walking through the cookoff gave one an excellent perspective of the variety of contests being held.

Chairman, Mike Austin, in his tenth year or so, has created an event that is important to the community of San Bernardino in all of its demographic diversity. There is something for everyone. From karaoke contests all day, to the 5th Annual California State Menudo Championship, to the open-and-restaurant division, the chili-eating contest and, of course, the various ICS competitions, everyone has their favorite diversion with which to entertain themselves. Sponsorships garnered by Mike exceeded $14,000 this year, with a couple of new sponsors on board. Mike plans to write a follow-up article with more thank-yous and follow-up information on this subject.

The judging panel consisted of a San Bernardino City Councilman, a TV show crew chief (we were filmed, and we're all gonna be famous!), sponsors' representatives, various other local celebrities and interested parties, and so many chiliheads that several World-Class ICS chili judges were relegated to judging the preliminary tables for Traditional Red Chili. The judging area was very comfortable for the judges, who were treated to an excellent taco lunch and very nice "goodie bags". Chief Judge and Chief Scorekeeper were Bill and Karen Ray. Masters of Ceremonies on two stages were Steve Porter and Claude Covington. The non-ICS-sanctioned contests were coordinated and scored by Donnie Gordon, assisted by Jim and Willma Maehl, Aggie Wright and varous other volunteers. Assistant ICS Scorekeepers were Allene Macklin, Mary Ellen Weber and Linda Porter. More than $5,000 in prize money was distributed to the winners.

First, our apologizes for taking a full week to get this posting out, we know there are many people who await these results and we're sorry for any inconveniences that the delay may have caused. We had a very successful Double Regional on April 25th & 26th in Loxahatchee Florida. Before listing the winners we would like to say thank you to some people who made it all possible.

.

First, our committee heads. Without them and the over 125 volunteers from the community this event would not have gone as smooth as it did.

.

Then there is Sergei Kowalchik, we can't put into words the help and guidance that this man has provided to us the past two years and with this year being our first two day regional what could have been overwhelming was made smooth and manageable thanks in large part to Sergei's guidance.

And we would be remiss to not mention Zori Mickle our Chili Chairperson. The cook-off portion of this event would be a zoo without her. Our hope and intent is to make this one of the most fun and entertaining Cook-offs around in the years ahead and we believe in the past year we have gotten off to a great start towards that goal. We had a great Cooks and Judges party with a live band and a visit by some of The Chili Chicks dance team, free beer and appetizers and a good time with friends both old and new.

.

As for the event, we had approximately 6,000 people come out for a great time with friends, neighbors and families enjoying the fantastic chili, local and Nashville bands, all the free attractions and of course the World Famous Chili Chicks Dance Team.

.

Thanks again to all of you who participated and to those of you who haven't yet made it out to this event we look forward to welcoming you next year.

Lancaster Chili Showdown

Lancaster wasn't cold at 7 am, but the Flags were standing straight out... there was wind. As we neared the cookoff area we see Dave Thomas' canopy go down (in several pieces). Not a great start for a first time cookoff that didn't get the flyers out. This could definitely hurt the number of cooks deciding to make the trip after a hard day at Cal State. However, the sponsors were happy (except for the fact that we cancelled salsa and gave the money back to the two contestants entered). The wind blew all day, but some cars and trucks were moved in to block some of it. It was a challenge with everyone trying to keep their tables upright and regulate there stoves while not burning their chili. Thankfully the judging was inside and we didn't have to worry about bowls going over in the wind. Jim Maehl did his usual great job. Scorekeepers were Donnie Gordon, MaryEllen Weber, Norma Ferrante, Willma Maehl & Sylvia Steinberg. Carol Hancock even pitched in to help with the Wrangling. And the winners:

This is a very nice venue and they have a huge swap meet at this time every year. They should be getting the sanction in for the date and printing flyers soon. So mark your calendars for the 1st Sunday in May (right after Cal State and yes there is an RV park) next year.

For those of you who are not as old as the rest of us and haven't been around forever, this is a great place to hear the local view of our days at Tropico. They have quite a few tales and are willing to tell you about "the old days" at the World's Championship.
