Chili cookoff in Lake Ariel, Pa - Jim Miller

SATURDAY JUNE 10TH

NEPA 2ND ANNUAL DISTRICT CHILI COOKOFF & VEHICLE SHOW

Lake Ariel is a small town located in northeast PA, about 20 minutes from Scranton and it is easily accessible off of interstate 84 at exit 17. The lake Ariel fire company uses fund raisers to help us maintain our daily expenses since we have no funding from the town.

This is our second year doing the cookoff last year we had about 9 ICS cooks and another 8 or so fire department cooks for the fire department division. We are hoping that within the next 2 years we can make this event grow into a regional cookoff but for that we need your help. We feel that the cash prizes we our offering are of a nice amount that it makes it worthwhile to travel to the cookoff and for those of you wishing to stay longer we are in the popcorn's so there is lots to do either before or after the cookoff.

If any one needs info on camp grounds let me know there are a few in the area , also the Comfort inn in Hamlin has a block of rooms set aside for chili cooks you just need to mention you are here for the lake Ariel chili cookoff and will get a special rate.

City of Colton Unity Day Regional - Karen Ray

Yet another beautiful Spring day appeared last Saturday for the 2nd Annual Unity Day Chili Cookoff. Did I say Spring? It felt more like summer; temperatures were in the mid-80's! This event is a true community affair. There are displays from many City of Colton Departments, including a great turnout from the Fire Department. But talk about one-upmanshop---the Swat team showed up in their brand new customized Hummer, and in full Swat uniform!

Public attendance was excellent. They greatly enjoyed all of the vendors and music and particularly the People's Choice chili provided by the cooks. Wyatt Earp once lived in Colton, and we usually see some members of the family here. In fact, last year Don Earp judged for us. This year was lacking any activity from them, and we didn't think to ask why.

But the cooks had plenty to keep them occupied. All three contests were "hotly" contested for the outstanding prize money available for the winning. Bill Ray was Chief Judge. The Scorekeepers were Karen Ray and Mary Ellen Weber. Chairperson Judy Clarke is also a chili cook, as is her husband, Tom. They put together a super event. And the winners were:

Inland Empire Regional - Karen & Bill Ray

Just two weeks to go until the 4th Annual Inland Empire Regional. Entries are a little slow coming in, but we're confident that we'll have a full complement of cooks on May 27TH. This is another excellent community affair with something for everyone.

For you who have not been able to attend, here's what goes on. We close off six blocks of Magnolia Avenue, one of the main thoroughfares in Riverside. At one end is a car show, at the other end the chili cookoff. In between is a craft fair (all homemade crafts), food vendors and lots of activities for the kids, including a pony sweep. On the main stage we are entertained in the morning by the La Sierra High School Jazz Band. At 11:00 "Cub" takes over for the rest of the day. "Cubo" is an excellent band, the members of which are all also members of the Riverside Police Department.

Estimated attendance the last three years has been 8,000 to 10,000 people! They are very appreciative of the People's Choice Chili offered by the ICS cooks, as well as the exotic concoctions supplied by the Community Cooks for their contest.

Excellent prize monies are waiting to be won, as well as trophies for 1st through 5th places.

If you're already qualified and can't cook, come on out and help with the judging! We need your help, and the cooks will appreciate it. We have a list of local motels with their rates, if you need accommodations.

Whittier CA District Chili Cook-off - Don Hammes

This cook off will be held May 21. It is fast approaching. We are limited to 50 cooks (the 50th cook to sign up will receive a new model car from Jeff Ray, Mr. Utah himself)
