Hudson Valley Regional Cookoff

It was a typical fall day in the heart of the Hudson Valley. The trees were at their peak of their colors and the blue sky and sunshine made the colors stand out even more. The weather was cold in the morning, but warmed up as the day went on. It would have been warmer had it not been for the wind. The sound of the leaves rustling in that wind was drowned out by the hundred of Harleys bringing their riders in to taste the chili.

In spite of the cooler weather, or maybe because of it, the Hudson Valley Regional Cookoff at the Woodstock Harley-Davidson was once again a huge success. Since the cooks had just come back from the World Championships, they were anxious to be the first one in the area to qualify for 2009. We had several new cooks, most of the regular cooks and even a brand new future cook, Jonathan Eckley, all of 18 days old. We had a small memorial to Sy Brockway, who for years graced the judging tent at all the cookoffs in the Northeast. We also awarded the Cy Gross Award, given to the cook(s) who exhibits the true meaning of the cookoffs, to Mike and Mary Alice Kropp, who, even when they are both competing in all 3 categories, still manage to make and give out gallons of People's Choice Chili.

The cooks as well as the spectators love this event and the setting as well as the foliage, make it very special.

*BREAKING NEWS FROM RHODE ISLAND*

Dear ICS Members,

The long awaited announcement of the FIRST (according to Barbara Ward) International Chili Society sanctioned Chili Cookoff in Rhode Island is finally here!

Many cooks have waited a long time for a chance to add the last state in the U.S. to their map of states they've cooked in.The event will benefit March of Dimes RI and the great work that they do.

The first Rhode Island State Chili Cookoff will be February 28,2009 at Portsmouth High School,Portsmouth RI. which is a 1/2 hour from Providence and just before Newport. Portsmouth High School is a state of the art facility that will accomodate all of our needs and is convienently located to TF Green Airport in Providence and near Logan Airport in Boston.

No tents or tables will be required as the RISCCO will be indoors. Chief Judge is Steve Falkowski (WCCC 1997) and Chief Score Keeper will be Audrey Falkowski. As we anticipate a great response from chili cooks near and far, please don't delay and sign up on the ICS website http://www.chilicookoff.com/Event/Event_Display.asp?EventID=2383
