WCCC 2008 MORE INFORMATION

.

I would like to remind all of the cooks who are participating in the Worlds Championship Chili Cookoff that you need to use a Coleman type propane stove. Please do not try to use a white gas camping stove (this drives the fire marshal nuts). I will have a couple of stoves available if you find that yours has failed. Once again we will have propane on sale for three dollars a bottle. Exact change appreciated. We will also have ice available for the cooks. There are ice machines at the end of the hallways in the hotel as well. We will let you know were the ice will be available at the cooks meeting.

.

Good luck, and good chili cooking.

UTAH STATE

Bad news….. Jeff Ray cannot help us with coordinating our cook-off this year. Between the Health Dept issues and this we have decided to cancel this year's event. I will be in contact with everyone that has already registered with ICS. Hopefully, we can make this work sometime in the future.

Heidi's Hoover Passing

My wife and best friend of 41 years passed away this afternoon peacefully with her family at her side making her comfortable. Heidi passed away after a long battle with cancer.

She was deeply appreciative of the cards and thoughts from our chili friends.

God Bless Heidi Hoover.

Utah State Cook Off

Attention Chili Cooks!

.

The Utah State Chili Cook-Off at Wolf Mountain is happening on October 25, 2009. If you plan to join us this year you will need to obtain a temporary food establishment permit from the Weber/Morgan Health Dept. before coming to the event. Permits cannot be sold on-site. Below is a portion of a letter that we received from the Health Dept.

.

"Permits must be obtained at our office prior to the event and our representatives cannot sell permits on-site. Booths without permits will be closed on-site by our department. Applications can be obtained in our office located at 477 23rd St., Ogden, UT 84401 or on-line at: http://www.webermorganhealth.org/documents/WeberMorganHealthDept_002.pdf Out of state contestants may download the application form and submit it by mail or fax. Upon application approval, VISA/MC payments may be called into our office at 801-399-7160. The cost for a one day temporary food establishment permit is $25.00.

.

Please inform participants that food prepared at home or in an unregulated kitchen will not be allowed. This includes any pre-cutting, cooking or marinading of meats, sauces and/or vegetables. This will also be addressed in the application to obtain a permit with our department and will be strictly enforced."

The Weber/Morgan Health Dept. site states that you must obtain a Food Handlers Permit in person before the event. I spoke to Kelley and they will honor the Food Handlers Permit that you currently carry. Just be sure to have a copy with you at the Wolf Mountain event.

.

If you have any questions please give me a call at 801-781-4131. If you would like to call the Health Dept. ask for Kelly Holmes. The 2 issues they had last year were Salsa that was pre-made and lack of hand washing in the booths.

.

Have a great time at the World Championship and we look forward to seeing you on October 25th!

.

The BABY

Hello to all of our friends and family. Today has been an exciting day. Kim and I are proud to announce the birth of our son Jonathan Wayne Eckley . He entered our world at 11:34 am September 30, 2008. He is 9lbs 06 ozs (not for long) and he measures out at a staggering 22 inches long. He was delivered via scheduled C section (do you blame her). He has plenty of dark brown hair. Enough to share with his follicaly challenged father. Mother and baby are doing well and are resting at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She will be in the hospital until at least Friday afternoon. I will enclose the visiting hours and address to the hospital if anyone wants to send cards or stop by for a visit.

We would also like to let our chili friends know that ther are only 18 more chances to win the WCCC before Johnny "Bean" Eckley gets his first world championship. Thanks to everyone who helped us with gifts and diapers etc... By the way by the time he was 1 hour old he had outgrown his newborn diapers.

Thanks again

Las Vegas Maps

Just wanted to let you know that detailed maps to grocery stores and specialty shops near the Tropicana will be available at www.AllThingsChili.com this Wednesday, October 1st. They are FREE but we charge one almighty dollar for shipping and handling. These maps will be complete with accurate directions, address' and phone #'s, other pertinent information and whatever else we can put in that will make it easier for chiliheads to find what they need. We don't want to face the challenge of trying to rescue our cooking and judging compadres from a bus full of Korean tourists (the pain ..... the agony ..... the kimchi ..... the flatuation, lordy, lordy!).

It was a great day at Applebee's Park in Lexington, Kentucky the site of this year's Bluegrass Regional Chili Cookoff, as cooks competed in one of the last cookoffs before the World Championships in just a couple of weeks in Las Vegas. The number one Chili Cooking family, the Lentz's (Diane, Larry, Carrie, Laurin and son-in-laws David and Christian) put on a great show for the participating cooks. The cookoff was held at the ballpark that is the home of the Lexington Legends and proved to be a perfect place for a cookoff. Make sure to check next year's cookoff calendar and mark this event on your schedule. Now onto Las Vegas, looking forward to seeing everyone there.

6th Annual

Springfield, IL.

Sept. 28 2008

.

Once again the Ansar Shrine Patrol members did another outstanding job of hosting the International Chili Society sanctioned Joe DeFrates Memorial Regional Chili Cookoff.

This group of people go all out to help all the contestants, judges and public attendance. What a GREAT Group!

Hats off to Rick Wray (Cookoff Chairman) for all of his efforts and work to keep all this going so smoothly.

Rick and the other members of the Patrol are already planning for even better things for this cookoff in the future. Keep this cookoff on your radar.

.

Proceeds from this event go to the Shriner's Children's Hospital and Shrine Charities. Although the totals for this years cookoff have not been tabulated, this event in the past, has raised several thousands of dollars to the above Charities.

.

The weather was perfect all weekend for the cookoff and the "Route 66 Mother Road Festival" which claims to have had their largest crowd ever and with more than 800 Classic Cars.

.

This was absolutely the "Last Chance" to qualify for the 2008 World's Championship to be held at the Tropicana Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas Oct 11 & 12, during the regular season.

.

With that we had several very good Salsa and Chili cooks

.

SALSA 10 contestants (10 judges)

3rd = Dearl Thomas 11 pts. (Clinton, IL.)

2nd = Larry Eastep 12 pts. (Springfield, IL.)

1st = Mike Goodman 18 pts. (Pewuakee, WI.)

.

CHILLI 23 contestants (17 judges)

4th = HM 3 way tie with 8 pts each, not broken. Hillary Schmedeke, Gary Ballweg, and Mike Goodman.

3rd = Jim Deere 9 pts. (Pana, IL.) $250

2nd = Tina Kruse 13 pts. (Taylorville, IL.) $500

1st = Dearl Thomas 14 Pts. (Clinton, IL.) $1,000

.

Not everyone can be a winner each time, but the ones this time were very, very happy.

And some that were close have expressed going to the Tropicana and the 2008 WCCC and trying for the "Last Chance" and some for just having fun.

Bright spot of the day was when we all learned that Dearl, not only has to carry Mary's bags, but that he gets to carry his own as well to the WCCC.

Congratulations to all the contestants......They are all winners!
