District Chili Cookoff - Rancho Cordova, CA

Dear Chilhead Friends,

.

Many of you have complained about the lack of District Cookoffs. Well, I am happy to announce I just signed up a new DISTRICT Cookoff here in Rancho Cordova, CA. It is Saturday, August 18th at Hagan Park (Formerly Geothe Park) along the banks of the American River in Rancho Cordova.

.

I realize this is very short notice, But, I need as many of you as possible. COOKS AS WELL AS JUDGES. The charity is "Catch the Spirit". They are a group of service clubs here in Rancho Cordova (Elks, Rotary, the City Police Dept, Scouts and the City of Rancho Cordova). They gather donations of food, money and Toys for Christmas baskets for our local military families in need. Due to the war, many of our military heroes have done several tours of duty. This puts an added strain and burden on the already cash strapped families. Many go without during the holidays. The local community and media have jumped all over this project. It promises to be a great event.

.

In addition to the ICS District cookoff, they will be doing a Western States BBQ contest, local restaurants steak and burger cookoff, and many more. (They have asked chili cooks to judge some of these events)

.

The event begins on Friday. "Catch the Spirit" has invited ALL chili contestants to join them on Friday afternoon and evening for plenty of FREE food, music and fun.

.

Saturdays ICS event will begin early. Red prep 10-11, stoves on at 11:00 with turn in at 2:00pm.

We realize Voni and John have their big Reno Regional on Sunday the 19th. John and Voni's AWESOME kickoff party and steak BBQ starts at 4:30 and will go most of the evening. John has told me to let him know who will be arriving a little late and he will make sure to have plenty of steaks for you. With a 2:00pm turn in time, we can get you out of town by 3:00, that gives you plenty of time to get to Reno for the Medcraft's party.

.

If you are NOT planning on attending the Reno Regional, I would encourage you to stay all day and participate in the People's Choice event. The Elks will supply ALL of the ingredients for you. Meat, spices, beans, etc. They are also offering a big $ prize for BEST People's Choice Chili.

.

At this point I am trying to get the required 7 red chili's to make a legal event. If you are interested at all, please let me know as soon as possible. First place Red Chili is $650.00 plus a FREE place in Omaha's Last Chance Chili Cookoff. $650 will make a nice dent in travel expenses. NOT BAD….

.

If you are interested in Chili Verde and/or Salsa, let me know that as well and if we get the 7 teams, we will do those events as well. Prizes and trophies for 2nd and 3rd place Red Chili as well as 1st – 3rd in Chile Verde and Salsa, if we do those.

.

PLEASE REPLY AS SOON AS YOU KNOW YOU CAN COME!!!!!! I will then forward all other details you may require, directions, hotels, etc.

MONDAY - July 23, 2007

Alberta Championship and Western Canadian Regional
We had two lovely hot and sunny days at the Crossroads Market. Wild Bill Torvi was once again our DJ and kept us entertained both days. He has promised to start cooking chili again next year and we are going to hold him to that. He had fun judging for a change though. We had one new cook - Collette and she enjoyed herself immensely and has promised to be back.
Many thanks to the Crossroads Market for their sponsorship and help and for the lovely BBQ on Saturday night. The cooks really appreciated it. Thanks also to George Glover and his lovely new wife Arienne for stepping in to take over as Head Judge and Scorekeeper so we could have both contests. You did a great job and ensured that the judging was fair and properly done.

One hundred percent of the entry fees were returned to the cooks in prize money and the charity (our daughter's) was Bethel #19 of the International Order of Job's Daughters. They sold the tasting cups and cold bottles of water and raised almost $300.00. Dolene Michel was selling some of her handcrafts at her booth and she donated 20% of her profits to the girls and Mary Anne Smith gave a donation of $25.00 to the girls. Thank you ladies.

Randy and I would also like to thank Rod and Mary Ann Smith from North Dakota and Darol and Bob Wetzel for making the journey to Calgary from North Dakota and Montana respectively. We really appreciate your support of this event!!
Don't forget the Montana State Cookoff has been moved to the Wetzel's hometown of Manhatten, Montana to coincide with the Potato Festival and it will take place on Saturday, August 18th. There is good prize money involved and a lot of fun things to see and do.

Vermont State Cookoff results – by Audrey Falkowski

No one could have asked for a nicer day for a cookoff. A storm ran thru the area the night before, spoiling the ongoing local carnival, but by 8 am the sky was turning blue and the sun was warming things up for the Arlington Fire Company #1 Annual Carnival and Vermont State Chili Cookoff. This was the first time in 4 years we had a Vermont State cookoff and the low humidity, gentle breezes and temps in the low 80's made for a great return of a cooks favorite. The fire company did a great job putting this together with not much notice. The crowds were a little sparse, but that didn't stop the cooks from making great chili. The fire company loved having the cookoff and they are looking forward to repeating this next year. Keep an eye out for this great event.

This was a great win for all. It was Bob Myers first win. I think his adorable daughter, Shannon (his server), was more excited than Bob.

Dave Schulman has had a dry spell. It was good to see him smiling again.

Dick Dowling has had a 5 year dry spell in the red category. He's done well with green, but this was an especially sweet win for him.

We were thrilled for all the winners. See you in Omaha!
