.
We need your support for the back to back River City Regional in Folsom, CA June 10 & 11, 2006. This is the Andy "Granny" Sanchez Memorial cook-off. Please come in honor of our friend Andy. Those that remember the old Folsom Chili Cook-Off days, we are back and better than ever. It promises to be a fantastic event.
.
Scarlet's, a new upscale bar and restaurant, is going to be our hosts for our Friday night party. The doors open at 5:00pm and the first $750 of drinks will be on Scarlet's They have co-ordinated the 5 bands that will be playing over the 2 days at the cook-offs. They have alot of experience in the bar, restaurant and music business, so it should be a great night. DO NOT MISS IT!!!!! They are located at the corner of Sutter Street and Riley. Next to Chicago Pizza.
.
Steve and I need to know if you are coming. If you plan to judge, please send me an e-mail or call me, that you will be there and which days and categories you will be judging. Judges check in will be in front of the Chamber of Commerce Building at 200 Wool St. We will provide a shaded VIP area for your enjoyment.
.
If you plan to cook, space on the street is limited, so we need to know if you will be cooking, which days and which categories. Remember, we offer cash prizes 1st-3rd places, both days for Best Booth. Please be creative and decorate your booth. There will be media coverage, so please put on a great show!!!
.
We have over $3,000 in cash and trophies for all three categories both days. We will pay down to 3rd place in each division.
.
Set up on both days will be 7:00-9:00am. Cooks meeting will be at 9:30. Stoves on for Chili Verde at 10:00. Turn in for salsa is at 12:00. Turn in for Chili Verde is 1:00pm. Turn in for traditional red is 3:00pm. You will need to provide all your own gear (including tables & chairs), we will only provide a 10 X 10 space for your set up.
.
Unfortunately, since the businesses along the street (restaurant's bars, etc) will continue doing business Saturday night after the cook-off and need the parking for patrons, you will NOT be able to leave any of your gear on-site. I realize this is a hassle, but it is in your best interest to take your gear with you.
.
Use this link for hotels/motels in the area. www.searchparty.com Type in Folsom, CA and your check in and check out dates and the site will provide you with all the hotels and motels in the surrounding area. The Natoma Inn is our official headquarters, so please give them a call first if you can. Ask for the River City Regional Cook-off rate.
.
We look forward to seeing you here in Folsom, please drop me a line or call me if you have any questions.

Hawaii State CCO results - Jim Stoddard

Greetings from Honolulu! Once again, Jack and Donna Scaff have put on a world class event at their beautiful home overlooking the bay this Memorial Day. The Hawaii State CCO is definitely on my short list of premiere cookoffs. The event is held at their house and gets kicked off the night before with musical entertainment, dinner and drinks. The next morning, breakfast is served to the cooks, a flyby by the Navy over Jack’s house is watched, and the cookoff is launched with the firing of the cannon that set off car alarms on the street above. All day the food keeps coming, the drinks keep flowing and the crowd pours in…..standing room only. A mariachi band, a steel band and a roving barbershop quartet kept the cooks and crowd entertained all afternoon. Thanks Jack, Donna, the “kitchen crew” and all the help they had! If you haven’t been, put this down as a must do!

Now the winners;

A chili pioneer passes...... - Bob Alexander
Old time cooks will note the passing of Bob Scroggs, 73 years old, who was killed in a tractor accident on his farm near Bixby, Oklahoma. Bob and his wife, Phyllis, organized the first ICS cookoff in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1980. It is still going strong without a break and is now known as the Mid America Regional.
.
.
.
Garden Grove Elks July 4th Regional - Bobbie Gaul
The Garden Grove Elks Chili Fest Regional is fast approaching. The Lodge is located at Trask and Newhope in Garden Grove, CA. We would like to see all the cooks come out to this one (lets make it the biggest on the West Coast bar none). The prize money is great, 1st Pl. $800.00, 2nd Pl. $400.00, 3rd Pl. $200.00, 4th Pl. $100.00, 5th Pl. $50.00. Prize money for Chili Verde is 1st Pl. $300.00, 2nd Pl. $200.00, 3rd Pl. $100.00. Salsa is 100% payback. Entry fees: Red: $35.00, Verde: $20.00, Salsa: $10.00 plus 1 gallon of People's Choice Chili.
.
Don Hammes is Chief Judge and Bobbie Gaul is Chief Scorekeeper (and Norm will be there too). If you can't cook come on out and judge, we would love to have your help.
.
.
.
Ray's Service - Mary Ellen Webber
I would like you all to know that I appreciated all the support you gave me today. It was not a happy day for the Chili World to have to say good by to one of our own. I know that Ray loved all of you and he would be happy so many of his friends were there to say goodbye. I'll see you all somewhere down the chili trail.
.
.
.
Inland Empire Regional - Karen & Bill Ray
It was a perfect day for a chili cookoff. Temperatures were in the mid-70s, and a mild breeze blew. Southern California chili has been very busy during May, and this was the "last hurrah". Many Southern California chili cooks qualified early for the World this year, and some of them came out to help with the judging. Quite an elite panel assembled to assess the efforts of the cooks.
.
Ray Little has been the Chief Judge of this cookoff since its inception. As most of you know, Ray passed away last Sunday. Steve Porter graciously took over the duties of Chief Judge with understanding and efficiency. Scorekeepers were Mary Ellen Weber, Donnie Gordon and Linda Porter.
.
Chairman Bill Ray worked with the Arlington Business Partnership to put together a family-friendly event. This event closes down six blocks of one of the main streets of Riverside, Magnolia Avenue. At one end are the chili cooks; at the other end is a car show which, this year, featured over 80 fantastic cars! Between are a craft fair (all handmade crafts), food vendors and entertainment for the kids, including a pony ride and a petting zoo. Community cooks are featured, with prizes awarded totaling $1,075.00 plus a set of Firestone tires for the winner, valued at up to $500.00! Local salsa contestants earned $175.00. There were also contests for Little Miss Chili Pepper and Little Mister Hot Sauce, under 12 years of age. Claude Covington, who is also the emcee at the World's Championship, handles the stage duties with great aplomb.
.
The cooks did not disappoint. A contingency of Southern California's best turned out to support this event, competing to win the $3,675.00 in prize money available to them.
The winners were:
.
Salsa (27)!! entries---two tables plus a final table! $525.00 prize money
5th, Red Brecke CA
4th, Dick Swenberger AZ
3rd, George Swick CA
