A chili pioneer passes...... - Bob Alexander
Old time cooks will note the passing of Bob Scroggs, 73 years old, who was killed in a tractor accident on his farm near Bixby, Oklahoma. Bob and his wife, Phyllis, organized the first ICS cookoff in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1980. It is still going strong without a break and is now known as the Mid America Regional.

Garden Grove Elks July 4th Regional - Bobbie Gaul
The Garden Grove Elks Chili Fest Regional is fast approaching. The Lodge is located at Trask and Newhope in Garden Grove, CA. We would like to see all the cooks come out to this one (lets make it the biggest on the West Coast bar none). The prize money is great, 1st Pl. $800.00, 2nd Pl. $400.00, 3rd Pl. $200.00, 4th Pl. $100.00, 5th Pl. $50.00. Prize money for Chili Verde is 1st Pl. $300.00, 2nd Pl. $200.00, 3rd Pl. $100.00. Salsa is 100% payback. Entry fees: Red: $35.00, Verde: $20.00, Salsa: $10.00 plus 1 gallon of People's Choice Chili.
.
Don Hammes is Chief Judge and Bobbie Gaul is Chief Scorekeeper (and Norm will be there too). If you can't cook come on out and judge, we would love to have your help.

Ray's Service - Mary Ellen Webber
I would like you all to know that I appreciated all the support you gave me today. It was not a happy day for the Chili World to have to say good by to one of our own. I know that Ray loved all of you and he would be happy so many of his friends were there to say goodbye. I'll see you all somewhere down the chili trail.

Inland Empire Regional - Karen & Bill Ray
It was a perfect day for a chili cookoff. Temperatures were in the mid-70s, and a mild breeze blew. Southern California chili has been very busy during May, and this was the "last hurrah". Many Southern California chili cooks qualified early for the World this year, and some of them came out to help with the judging. Quite an elite panel assembled to assess the efforts of the cooks.
.
Ray Little has been the Chief Judge of this cookoff since its inception. As most of you know, Ray passed away last Sunday. Steve Porter graciously took over the duties of Chief Judge with understanding and efficiency. Scorekeepers were Mary Ellen Weber, Donnie Gordon and Linda Porter.
.
Chairman Bill Ray worked with the Arlington Business Partnership to put together a family-friendly event. This event closes down six blocks of one of the main streets of Riverside, Magnolia Avenue. At one end are the chili cooks; at the other end is a car show which, this year, featured over 80 fantastic cars! Between are a craft fair (all handmade crafts), food vendors and entertainment for the kids, including a pony ride and a petting zoo. Community cooks are featured, with prizes awarded totaling $1,075.00 plus a set of Firestone tires for the winner, valued at up to $500.00! Local salsa contestants earned $175.00. There were also contests for Little Miss Chili Pepper and Little Mister Hot Sauce, under 12 years of age. Claude Covington, who is also the emcee at the World's Championship, handles the stage duties with great aplomb.
.
The cooks did not disappoint. A contingency of Southern California's best turned out to support this event, competing to win the $3,675.00 in prize money available to them.
