MARIA AUSTIN'S HEALTH UPDATE 3-14-08

Dear Friends and Fam-Lee

Round 7 is going to be a good round for Maria. Like I said before, I hate to get too excited about good days, because of the let downs (sometimes) to follow. Maria was able with some help from myself and the PT to sit on the side of the bed yesterday, Hurray! She was wobbly as a person would be after 8 1/2 weeks on her back. I pray it's going to be all good from here on out, but I know we will have some minor setbacks along the way. She seems, so far to except the trech, I do believe it will speed her recovery. I pray she will be able to eat and speak soon and they can remove it. Her blood pressure and breathing have improved, and her lungs are getting better. Praise God for everyday we have her with us. Thank all of you again, for your Phone Calls, Cards, Prayers and Good Wishes, they mean a lot to me and my Fam-Lee. Please don't stop Praying.

Love You All

Mike Austin and Fam-Lee

Keep Cooking that Great Chili.. I will be back out there soon on the Chili Trail. I sure do miss the competition and friends. ( maybe a Shoot and Holler here and there).

Oh Yeah, don't forget California State May 3rd 2008.

I also want to thank all the Cooks that cooked at Bill and Karen Ray's house Saturday. They donated all the Chili that was cooked to the Hospital crew that are working with Maria. I did tell the nurses, that they will only get the Chili when Maria gets out the right way. Also thanks for all the Big Hugs! I needed them.

Love You All

Calgary chili cookoffs

Hi everyone
Randy and I are contemplating moving the two regional chili cookoffs to the Memorial Day weekend in May and are trying to get a sense of how many cooks might be interested in making the journey to Calgary.
We are working on our sponsors for prize money but doing this basically three months earlier than planned will bring its own set of problems. It is also our daughter Lauren's graduation weekend.
I had a fall in November and am currently having to use a walker/can/electric scooter to get around. I see a sports medicine doctor next week to try and start to figure our why my right leg is not working properly.
.
So...if you think that Calgary could possibly be in your travel plans could you please let us know ASAP. Thanks
Joy and Randy Bilozir

Bill Donovan Update

On March 1st over 600 family, friends and firefighters crowded our community field house/gymnasium to, as my dad would say, "Get The Party Started!"

The only element missing were my parents. My dad's immune system would now allow them to attend. My dad's favorite local Cajun Band played and threw colorful beads to the crowd.

Over 100 baskets were donated for raffle and even more items were donated for bid and buy.

Gold Star Chili donated the spicy coneys and the "fluids" flowed. It was a benefit that my parents would have loved to have attended, for someone else that is...

As givers,my parents have a difficult time accepting the generosity that you have shown. "Chilihead" friends from East to West, North and South also generously contributed to the benefit fund and in total 35 thousand dollars was raised for my dad's ongoing medical treatments. Your generosity has been unbelievable. Thank you!

As my dad continues to receive intense chemo treatments for leukemia please remember to keep him and my mom in your prayers. Thanks again for all of your love and support for my parents.

Bill's "Gumby's" son Carl

Route 66 Regional Awards

The simple gasoline pump. Long an icon of travel in these United States, the gasoline pump once was found from Chicago to Santa Monica in incredible numbers alongside Route 66, from big cities like St. Louis and Tulsa to tiny places like Twin Arrows, Truxton and Amboy. Every few miles, you could find a place to gas up your vehicle. Nowadays, you have to look for the places just off the interstate at a Love's or Petro to find your gas and some new fangled electronic pump. But on June 14, 2008, you will be able to once again find old style gasoline pumps. First place Red Chili at the 25th Annual Silver Anniversary Route 66 Regional Chili Cookoff in Flagstaff, Arizona, the winner gets a beautiful replica of an old style gas pump, on of the coolest trophies offered in all of ICS. Ask Kathy Plager or Eddie LaCross about it, they both have one of these 2 and a half foot tall trophies proudly displayed. And in Salsa, all 3 of the winners get miniature gas pump trophies to take home. Very unique trophies from a very unique cookoff. Hope we'll see you here in Flagstaff trying to take one home!

Party/Practice Cookoff/Party

Dick and Nancy Swenberger left Phoenix at 4:00 am. Donnie Gordon left Las Vegas at 4:30 am. Other cooks, judges, groupies and friends took various amounts of time to arrive at Bill and Karen Ray's home in time to participate in their Party/Practice Cookoff/Party on Saturday.

.

It was a picture-perfect day in Riverside. It was cool in the morning when the contestants set up in the Ray's spacious yard. Later the temperatures rose to the mid-70s, making a comfortable day for all concerned. It was a varied group who assembled for the event---chiliheads aplenty, Karen's coworkers and members of English Springer Rescue America, with dogs, rubbed elbows around the cooking and judging tables. We estimate that about 65 people were here in some capacity.

Early arrivals were greeted with coffee and cinnamon twists, followed by Mary Ellen's Bloody Marys. A generous lunch of hamburgers, hot dogs and hot links, cooked to order by Bill Ray, followed. Side dishes included an appetizer from Karen Angotti, deviled eggs by Mike Ford, Barry Steinberg's red beans and rice, salads from Aggie Wright and Karen Ray, desserts from Bob Dyer and Karen Cooley and assorted chips and condiments.

.

Special thanks to Mary Ellen Weber, Chief Judge; Donnie Gordon, Scorekeeper; Claude Covington, who helped with the lunch orders; Kathy Stewart, who helped Claude help with the lunch orders; Dennis Macklin for his generous donations of gifts and prizes.

.

Even if this wasn't a "real" chili cookoff, there were contestants, judges and winners. There were no losers. All of the chili that was cooked today was given to Mike Austin for a future "chili feed" for the caregivers to Maria Austin during her long battle to recover from a massive heart attack seven weeks ago. Mike was here and in good spirits despite his vigilance at Maria's bedside for the last weeks. He is optimistic that Maria will "walk out of there alive" in the near future. Prayers and good wishes are still needed for Maria.

.

How it works at these informal cookoffs (at least here on the left coast) is that the cooks first judge the chilis (preliminary table) then everybody else judges the chilis (final table), which counts for the prizes (furnished by Bill and Karen) and $$$ (collected from the cooks). And the winners were:

.

Chili Verde (3 contestants):

Cooks Judging:

3rd, Dick Swenberger

2nd, Allene Macklin

1st, Judy Barnes

Judges Judging:

3rd, Allene Macklin

2nd, Judy Barnes

1st, Dick Swenberger

.

Traditional Red Chili (10 contestants);

Cooks Judging:

3rd, Dick Swenberger

2nd, Mike Ford

1st, Nancy Swenberger

.

Judges Judging:

3rd, Red Brecke

2nd, Mike Ford

1st, Karl Smith
