Mentone CA Regional - by Karen Ray
The weather forecast did not come true! It was predicted that the Inland Empire would have temperastures in the 90s with serious Santa Ana winds. Since this cookoff is held at a Christmas Tree Farm/Pumpkin Patch, this would have made for a hot, miserable and dirty day. Instead temperatures remained in the 80s with only an occasional gust of light wind. The Mentone Chamber of Commerce could not have ordered a better day for their annual event.
.
The turnout from chili cooks was good for this last Regional of the chili year in Southern California. The turnout from the public was sensational. From the time the gates opened at 11:00 am the area was crowded with people enjoying the day and the beer and the People's Choice chili and the beer and the bands and the beer and the vendors and the beer. Three separate locally popular bands played throughout the day, entertaining everyone with their versions of rock and roll.
.
Chairman, Jim Lotito, headed up this 6th Annual Chili Cookoff. You may remember Jim as the fellow who traveled across the country with Ormly Gumfudgin in his special Volkswagen customized to represent a stagecoach, publicizing the ICS in particular and chili in general. Jim does a marvelous job of recruiting new ICS members for this cookoff. Of 17 Salsa contestants, 5 were locals; of 27 Traditional Red entrants, 12 were locals; and 1 of the 8 Chili Verde participants was a local cook.
.
The trophies are priceless. Each piece is a unique ceramic statue mounted with a commemorative plaque designating the contest won.
.
The winners were:
.
Best Booth, Best Showmanship and People's Choice Chili were all won by Udo Winkler. Parrot Head Chili.
.
Best Costumes were the Women of Moose Lodge #1335 from Mentone.
.
Salsa:
3rd, Karl Smith
2nd, Marilee Barrett, all the way from Idaho to lose a tiebreaker to
1st, Judy Barnes, thrilled to be representing Mentone at Omaha!
.
Chili Verde:
3rd, Bob Wiseman
2nd, Domenique Blosfield
1st, David Thomas, cooking his 3rd bowl of Chili Verde!
.
Traditional Red Chili:
5th, Kyra Schneider
4th, Gene Wheat
3rd, Mike Stewart, the defending champion
2nd, Craig Stanton, competing in his fourth chili cookoff; great job Craig!
1st, David Thomas, who had what you might call a pretty good day!

Utah State
All right folks here's the scoop!
.
Utah State for the 2007 Season
October 21, 2006
(That's right literally just weeks away.)

extravaganza.
.
REAL PRIZE MONEY!
REAL TROPHIES!
REAL HEALTH INSPECTORS!
.
No more checks for $1.37

No more fake health inspectors (That's a good thing?)

We still have to work out some of the details, but it's a done deal
The ICS has the sanction money and all is right with the world.
.
The cookoff location is a few miles east of Odgen, Utah in the
beautiful Wasatch Mountains.
.
I will be meeting the Wolf Creek folks the next day or two and will
continue to bombard you with new information.

Baja Regional Results - by Mike Stewart

It was a beautiful day, Mexican Independence Day, in sunny Ensenada. As usual, John Hussong did a marvelous job creating a festive atmosphere, and had decorated all of the booths. Red, white and green bunting and balloons festooned the cook-off site. The only thing missing was ICS cooks. The chief judge announced that of the 9 cooks present, only 3 were ICS members. No effort was made to recruit the additional 4 cooks from the ‘open’ competitors in order to make it a sanctioned cook-off. There was minimal, if any promotion of this fun cook-off, possibly resulting in the lack of cooks. Kathy and I decided to save our efforts for Mentone and did not participate. Well, as Chief Judge Ken Merritt said, “What happens in Baja stays in Baja.”

Jack Black - Announcement written by Karen Ray
The chili world has lost another of it's special old timers. Jack Black passed away on Sunday, September 17th, having suffered multiple strokes, a staph infection and complications of diabetes. His family was with him at the end.
.
The West Coast chili folks will remember Jack announcing his arrival at the cookoffs with a clatter and a crash of canopy poles. Jack was a fierce competitor who thoroughly enjoyed the chili contests and participated totally in the spirit of the cookoffs. Although he underwent a double amputation of his legs some time ago due to diabetes, Jack continued to compete in chili cookoffs as long as his health allowed. He and his wife, Rita, lived and cooked in Southern California, then in the Reno area, and finally settled in Western Arizona, where they have lived for the last several years.
.
Jack is survived by his wife, Rita, their daughter Ora Ann Scantlin and a son, whose name escapes me. Services will be held on Sunday, September 24th in Glendale, Arizona. For more information, please call Ora at (760) 403-3545. Cards of sympathy may be sent to:

.

The Do Good Dude, once again, has organized a District cookoff at the Platte River Bar & Grill on Santa Fe Road & Bowles in Littleton, Colorado for October 1st, 2006.

.

This is the FIRST Cookoff of the 2007 year, and we'd like it to be a Regional again next year, so everyone, come on out. Of course, the winner of Red Chili advances to the Last Chance in 2007, and Chili Verde and Salsa qualify for the World's Championship in 2007.

.

Yes, it is one week before the World's. We know that!! Maybe, some of you traveling to the World's will drive to beautiful Colorado en route to Omaha. Think about it.

.

All proceeds will go to support military families of our Armed Forces. The Do Good Dude will have military HumVees there with major artillery fire power onboard (not live of course), and will have military personnel selling tasting kits, and more. Denver Broncos cheerleaders are scheduled to appear, since it is a bye week.

.

Tail Gate District Winners - St Louis, MO

The Community Care Event was the charity today. They care for abused
and abandoned dogs and had a booth at the cookoff.
.
With Busch Stadium within view across the street, a great country band in
the back ground and good food and drink at Al Hrabosky's Ballpark Saloon
a new district cook off was born. A fun time was had by all seven cooks.
These are seven new members of ICS who were eager to get involved,
cook good chili and learn how ICS puts on a cook off. They jumped right in
with the following results:
.
3rd place: Robbie Cassell
2nd place: Pam Parker
1st place: Steve Gilmore
.
Go Cardinals! They won the baseball game that started as we were
announcing winners. A great day and beautiful weather.

CONNECTICUT STATE

After 3 days of rain and the forecast for morning showers, the sun decided to shine on us from the beginning. It was a beautiful day with the breezes off the sound at East Shore Park in East Haven, CT. This was a particularly difficult cookoff to run for Chairperson Sharon Willard, as it is the first one since her beloved husband, Ted died a month ago. She said that he was always her rock and kept her going in the tough times. The chili cooks got together and with the permission of the Parks Department, a tree was planted in Ted’s name near the cookoff site. The Marine presence at the cookoff honored us all with “Taps”, which left us all in tears. There were some nice pictures of Ted and it made it feel like he was still looking out for us.
.
There were a good number of cooks, considering this was the last cookoff in the northeast before the Worlds.
.
Sharon also started a “Road to Omaha” cup a few years back to allow the cooks that have already qualified to cook up a practice pot and have it judged separately.
.
Results:
.
Salsa 11 entries
.
3rd place – Dave Lorenz NJ
2nd place – Jim Heywood NY
1st place – Chris Bucciferro CT
.
Verde 8 entries
.
3rd place tie (not broken)

.
5th place – Dave Schulman, CT
