How is our Houston ICS Family doing

OK here it is. We got off the island on Thursday with limited personal items. We boarded up the houses and haul a%^. We went to brother in laws
house to ride it out in Tomball, Texas, 70 miles or more inland. It blew all night and power went shortly after the really heavy stuff hit, We are now in Katy, Texas with friends who have power and that is a big deal in the Houston area. At the high point 4 million with no power, but today we are down to 1.5 million still down. SO the whole area is hunting ice, food and gas with no traffic lights to guide them around town. It is a mess but getting better.
.
Today we went back to the island for 4 hours to get in and check out things. Donnas office in downtown Galveston flooded first floor ( 10 feet of water). The good news is she is on the second floor. My parents 1903 house in the east end historical district three and 1/2 feet of water, but it is four feet off the ground. No water inside no broken windows, so one down two to go. Got out to the west end and found my house standing, but on heck of a mess all around. Then the other place little roof damage and a caved in ceiling, but nothing that can not be fixed.
.
So in a month when they get the power back on and the water system back we will return. I do not know what we are going to do about work since we are both self employed on the island. We will find a way to make it work. Galveston came back after the 1900 storm with no FEMA and even despite the fact they are in the way now it will come back after the storm of 2008. We are luck compared to the folks to the east of us. Just 30 miles from my house whole towns are wiped off the map and will never return. Galveston will never be the same, but it will be back and open for business in time for the spring and summer season.
With a few less houses? Speaking of houses do you know anyone looking for a vacation home. I think we have some folks ready to sell!!

See you in Vegas

ICS MESSAGE – ICS WCCC

To all ICS contestants - The location of the WCCC booths is the NE corner of the Tropicana's parking area between the Tropicana and Hooters. You will be allowed to drive up to your cooking booth each morning, unload your vehicle and drive to the parking spaces designated for the ICS. Parking for ICS participants is being provided in the same parking area just a few yards away from the booths. The time that vehicles will be allowed back into the cooking area will be determined by the Tropicana's security people. If the area is still attended by the public, cars cannot be allowed to drive through the area.

.

As stated in the qualification letters, canned chili will NOT be provided to cooks for use as People's Choice Chili. First, second and third place will be determined by the public votes each day. Please provide a minimum of one gallon of PC Chili each day that you cook if possible.

Fellow chilicooks--extending an invitation for you to cook with us on Sunday, Sept.28th. Winners in all 3 categories qualify for WCCC in Las Vegas. Come and enjoy the beautiful bluegrass region in Lexington, Kentucky. This year our cook-off will be at Applebees Park, home of the Lexington Legends baseball team. No canopies needed--tables and chairs provided. Since this is a new venue, we are hoping for a crowd, so if you could help us by bringing some additional chili to serve thru the afternoon it would really help. We really don't know what to expect, but hoping for a good public attendance. Any help from the chiliheads would be appreciated. We have tried to get some commercial people to help in this area, but to no avail.

We have tried to get special rates at hotels, but since it is a home weekend football game for the University of Kentucky no one would help.

There are rooms available in Lexington if you check online. If coming from the north, I would also check out Georgetown, Ky---from the

ICS Family & HURRICANE IKE

From Donna Foley

We are lucky enough to be staying with friends in Houston who have electricity.
.
From aerial photos, our houses are still standing.
.
Right now we are on the way to Galveston for a look and leave. We probably will not be able to return to the island to live and work for several weeks, probably not until after we return from Vegas.
.
The Wilkins have no electricity but have a generator and seem to be in good spirits.

.
The crowd was voracious and cleaned-out the chili cooks of people's choice, early.
.
Sunday, Maine State.
Wind, rain, sweatshirts, slickers, ponchos, umbrellas, hip boots.....
(I needed, but refused to put on wool mittens!!). Hey...we're in Maine!
It started out very wet and very windy, but ended up, just overcast.
The crowd was smaller than usual, because of the weather, but at least we didn't run out of people's choice chili.
.
Booth/Showmanship: Mario Saccocio, Mad Hatter Chili; Plaque and $50
.
People's Choice Chili: Mario Saccocio, Mad Hatter Chili; Plaque and $500
Mario beat everyone for the honor. Good for him.....again.
.
Salsa;
3rd place: Honorable mention: Kim Mallory
2nd place: Honorable mention: Tracy Navaroli
1st place: Plaque & $50: Mike Merola
Mike's first time at the WCCC. Good for him!
.
Green Chili;
3rd place: Honorable mention: George Holmeyer
2nd place: Honorable mention: Doctor Dick "please do not congratulate me on second place" Dowling.
1st place: Plaque & $100: Les Walters
.
Red Chili;
3rd place: Plaque & Honorable mention: Doctor Dick "do not even think about congratulating me on third place" Dowling.
2nd place: Plaque & Honorable mention: Mike Ford (he beat Doc on a tie breaker) and it was Mike's 44th second place finish this year...probably pretty much the same as Doc!)
1st place: Plaque & $200: Les Walters
A fine day for Les. Good for him. A half trick!! ;)
.
Congratulations to all.
.
And a sincere thank you the CA cooks....Mike and Bonnie Ford and Don Hammes, who traveled so far and spent so much to support this cookoff. And, we had cooks from NJ, PA, OH, and all of the six New England states. A lot of money was pumped into the Wells economy by the traveling cooks, and I thank you all for that.
.
Lastly, and by NO means leastly, the invaluable help of Audrey Falkowski as Scorekeeper, Steve Falkowski as "what else can I do for you, Joe?" super-wrangler, Kat Freedman working with Audrey, and Jerry Buma, Dave Sculman, Scoot & Tracy, the Mad One and all the other cook-judges who helped me get through the day. They all made my job that much easier.
.
Overall, a much lower number of cooks, than usual. Already qualified?....OK, it's late in the season. The economy.... It's not pretty up here in the northeast. The prize structure? The Chamber does not have bottom-less pockets. But, they would like to know what to do recreate the original turnout. Could you please let me know why, if you were a "regular" at Maine, what caused you to miss this year? No details.....just: already qualified....the economy....prize structure. I need your help to keep one of the prettiest venues in chili cooking alive, as a back-to-back.
.
Thanks,
Joe Harvey
Chief Judge

Town of Superior Regional

.

Perfect weather allowed the Town of Superior, Colorado to hold their biggest and best ever 8th Annual Chili Fest Chili Cookoff. With a crowd estimated at over 8000 people, they descended upon the cooks after 3:00 PM. With rain the day before, the cookoff was moved from the grass fields to the parking lots, which proved to be better for the event.

.

The event was from 3:00 - 7:00 PM, and cooks gathered and set up by 11:00 AM. Besides Colorado cooks, we had cooks that came from Arizona, and Utah. Thank you cooks, for making and giving away so much chili to this huge crowd. A big thank you, goes out to all the sponsors (about 30 of them), whom with their support, allowed this successful event to happen. Great ICS cooks, a restaurant People's Choice division, food and vendor booths, bands, and lots of volunteers from the Town of Superior, made this a grand event. Tasting kits were sold and $6,679 was raised for the charity, the Colorado Fallen Firefighters Foundation.

.

Special thanks goes out to Kristi and Dan Audette, Martin Toth, Jennifer Dunn, and the rest of the Town of Superior staff, who kept things running smoothly inside and outside the judging tent, and also to Kathy Plager, for keeping scorekeeping and all the paperwork in order, and who as usual, kept Bob Plager, Chief Judge in line.

.
