Chili Willi's Outlaw Chili Challenge - by David S. Mallory

The Chili Willis Outlaw Chili Challenge (February 18, 2007) was an event of mixed emotions! We learned Friday of the death of Harry Lynch from Summersville, WV. Harry was a great chili cook and a better friend to all!! We will miss him. In a form Harry would have enjoyed, all the cooks circled up and toasted him with a tequila before the stoves were lit.

Dr. Chuck Somerville of the Biology Department at Marshall University played guitar and sang for about 2 hours to keep feet tapping and even had Archie Chestnut dancing… go Archie…go Archie!!!

The cookoff was excellent. Great chilis and salsa were greeted by a small but enthusiastic crowd. Ron's bartenders kept everyone happy and at the end of the day donated ALL their tips to the charity.

The winners: Red… Kit Hoff

Verde… Kimberly Mallory

Salsa… Diane Lentz

Each donated their $100 prizes to the charity.

The NASCAR memorabilia raffle was a great success, with many cooks among those who took home autographed trading cards, display hoods, track tickets and even a slightly used racing tire.

All in all we raised a tad over $2,000 for the Emmons Fire Fund. These funds put the charity over the top of what they had hoped to raise, so that all those in need would receive the furniture that they requested. Nice to be last and to finish the charity drive over their mark.

The day ended on a very sad note. One of Ron's staff, Karen, learned that her best friend and former coworker at Chili Willis, Susie Eisel, had died of a tragic accident Sunday. Death definiately made his presence known at this cookoff.
