Colton Unity Day Regional
- by Karen Ray
Once again the chili and weather gods smiled on the Inland Empire for a chili cookoff. The high temperature was 79 with no wind, making ir very comfortable for the cooks to spend the day on the green grass of Chavez Park. The judges and scorekeepers were also very comfortable in an air-conditioned room in the adjacent community center. The Unity Day Celebration is a long-established tradition, bringing together the diverse ethnicity of the City of Colton with displays by City Departments and Services and, of course, the chili cookoff. The visitors to the event eagerly sampled the People's Choice chili provided by the contestants and voted for their favorites. Bands played and there was a petting zoo and other activities for the children.
Thanks to all who came out to help with this cookoff. Chief Judge was Bill Ray. Scorekeepers were Karen Ray and Mary Ellen Weber. Chairperson was Judy Clarke, ably assisted by her husband, Tom. Judges were Don Hammes, Dave Thomas, Armando and Patricia Sanchez, Mike Hulka, Sandy Hunt, "Dr." Dave Eiser, and Dan Caspersen. Cooks and judges all enjoyed the truly special "goodie bags" provided by our hosts.
.
At the end of the day, the winners were:

GREAT BOWLS OF FIRE

Due to several conflicts with other events, the Chili Fest and Cook-Off that was scheduled for this Saturday, May 12, 2007 has been postponed to Saturday, September 29, 2007.
.
"Due to date conflicts with Mother's Day, both high school and college graduations, as well as several other events, I have decided to postpone our Chili Fest until later in the year," said Cheryl Spriggs, the event chairperson. "I have had numerous requests to reschedule from both chili cooks and those who want to attend, so in order to accommodate as many cooks as possible, we will move the date back to the fall."
.
With the ICS deadline for winning cooks to advance to the championship rounds being October 1, this new date will still qualify Ashland winners to advance.
.
"I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused to those already involved, but we look forward to another spectacular event this fall!" Spriggs added. For additional information, or to register for the September Chili Fest, please contact Cheryl Spriggs at 606-831-0328.

River City Regional Chili Cookoffs # 1 & # 2 – June 2 & 3rd, 2007

Old Town Folsom, CA ~ Steve McIntire and David Hipskind - Chairmen

The River City Regional Chili Cookoff and Jimboys Tacos present "The2nd annual Old Town Folsom Chili Championship" on Saturday and Sunday, June 2 & 3, 2007, on Old Historic Sutter Street. We are very excited to have Dr Ernie Bodai's CureBreast Cancer Foundation as our benefactor. As you maybe aware Dr Bodai is the founder of the Breast Cancer Stamp. www.curebreastcancer.org

We need to know if you are planning to cook at the River City Regional Cookoffs. As of now, I have 15 Red for each day and the required 7 in Salsa and Verde. After 20+ years as one of the most successful Regional Cookoffs in Northern California, it would be a shame if these cookoffs did NOT retain their Regional Status. Please, check your calendars and come on back to the Old West and cook your best pot of Chili. It would be a great help if you would sign up on-line at www.chilicoff .com. It will let me know you are coming and what categories you are competing in. Plus, I will print them and bring to the cookoff; you will NOT have to complete another application. This will speed up the check in process.

We will gather at the Power House Pub on Friday evening for a pre-cookoff party. Plan to arrive after 5:00 and plan to spend the evening overlooking the American River, sipping a cold one, shooting the breeze about chili and watching the sun go down. If you are planning to join, please respond as soon as possible. I need to let Powerhouse know how much beer to supply. I will send the address and directions to Powerhouse when you let me know you are coming.

Set up begins at 7:00am both days. We do have security all night, so you can leave your tents and tables overnight if you wish.

SCHEDULE CATEGORY ENTRY FEE PRIZES 1st – 2nd – 3rd

If you are flying in, please let me know ASAP and I can arrange for table and chairs. The fire department may come by looking to inspect your fire extinguisher. If you have extra, please bring them. If you think you may have a problem, please let me know and we'll do everything we can to help.

Colton,CA. - Saturday May 12th

Saturday, May 12th, will be the date for the City of Colton Unity Day Celebration and Chili Cookoff. This cookoff features excellent prize money---$1,000 for red chili, $750 for chili verde, $300 for salsa and $100 for people's choice chili! There are also good money prizes for 2nd and 3rd places in red, chili verde and salsa!
For those of you who have been here in the past, it is at a different park, as there is renovation being done to the previous venue. To reach Chavez Park, take I10 to 9th Street in Colton; go North to "E" Street; turn right to the park. Fellow chiliheads, Tom and Judy Clarke, work hard every year to put on a quality cookoff. Show them your support by "showing up"! The first 25 teams get a nice goodie bag. We guarantee decent weather (not as hot as it's been!), and fair and honest judging!
.
Hope to see you there.

MONDAY - May7, 2007

34th Annual California State Chili Championship - by Karen Ray

Temperatures were in the mid 70s on Saturday May 5th for the 34th Annual California State Chili Championship in Perris Hill Park in San Bernardino, CA. Big trees shade the cooking area, and many of the cooks returned to their favorite "lucky" spot from years past. New cooks and regulars joined together to make the cookoff, combined with the 3rd Annual Inland Empire Menudo Cookoff, a great success. What could be a better date for such an event than Cinco de Mayo!?! The crowd in and out for the day was estimated by the Police Department at 30,000!!!

.

This event is a happening for the San Bernardino community. Many contests are going on, and the public is very involved in the tasting and judging. The community judges the PC Cruiser Show, the Teardrop Trailers/Tow Vehicles, the Restaurant/Open Chili Division, the Menudo Contest and the ICS People's Choice Chili. You can tell that there are many fans of the event returning, as they know the numbering systems and the times the various dishes are available for tasting. In charge of the non-ICS contests is Donnie Gordon, who travels down from Las Vegas for the weekend and does an outstanding job of making sense from chaos.

.

Of course, the full complement of ICS competitions were held, with all winners advancing to the World's Championship Chili Cookoff in October. Judges were there with an array of expertise, from old-timers such as Bill Storey to celebrities. We were honored to have the attention of Bob Balzer, the Publisher of the Sun-Telegram newspaper, Allan Borgon, who is a local restaurant critic with a weekly TV program, and Dennis Baxter, a San Bernardino City Councilman, who is a great fan of this event. Fred and Leah Wieland, our past World's Championship Chief Judge and Scorekeeper also attended, as did Ormly Gumfudgin, our ICS Historian, accompanied by his "better half" Edi.

.

The weather mostly cooperated, with only an few occasional gusts of wind to send the judging supplies scattering. Chairman, Mike Austin, assisted by his son, Tony, and his friend, Jeff Meads, had it all together. Emcees Steve Porter and Claude Covington handled the activities on two stages with competence. Dennis Macklin was the site coordinator, saving favorite spots for the regulars and recommending "good spots" to the newbies. Chief Judge, Bill Ray, held his usual interesting meetings; and Chief Scorekeeper, Karen Ray, managed to have all of the forms and supplies available for the judging. Karen was very ably assisted by Leah Wieland, Edi Gumfudgin, Mary Ellen Weber and Allene Macklin---what a crew!! Thanks to all for making it all happen.

.

At the end of the day, the winners were:

.

Best Booth:

2nd, Geraldine Villalpando, Chili a la Madre

1st, Bruce Pion, Killer Chili

.

Best Showmanship:

2nd, Dan Plascencia, Cowboy Chili

1st, Nancy Swenberger, Gone with the Wind Chili Too, Mesa AZ

.

Nancy now joins her husband, Dick, as a California State Champion. Her comment was "It really feels good!"

.

Thanks to all who contributed to this great event.

NERCC

Dear chili cooks

I'm sorry I didn't email you sooner....but it was our grand sons 1st birthday....and he had an messy appointment with a cake.

Kat and I can't begin to thank all of you enough. I wish we had an hour to spend with each of you as we wanted to talk to everyone of you. We tried.

From early estimates, you raised almost $9,000 and almost 14 carriages of canned goods for the Enfield Food Shelf! That's pretty darn good and you should all be proud of yourselves for what you did.

The K of C breakfast was great from all indications, the bands rocked(those 14 year old kids, huh??), the vendors were VERY gracious, the magician was so great, the judging and score keeping was stellar....and the weather fantastic.

I'll tell you one last story....yesterday during everything going on,Kat and I were running around..... a woman stopped me and asked if I was "Mad Mike". I told her I was....she gave me a BIG hug and then she proceeded to tell me that she used to receive services from the Enfield Food Shelf. She said that what you all were doing was a blessing to so many people and that she wanted me to thank you all at some point. So for Elizabeth and her 2 kids,"Thank YOU"......because you proved to a lot of people in this area what so many already knew....that Chili Cooks are "Dedicated to making a difference"....and like I said at the cooks meeting....when you cook chili with your friends, you're already a winner.

Please check http://chilict.tripod.Com/ as there are pics and news from the NERCC!

If you have any pics from the NERCC...please send them to me as I'll post them on the NERCC web site.

From our hearts,

Thank you so much for everything,

Kathy and Michael

New England Regional Chili Cookoff - by Audrey Falkowski

The New England Regional Chili Cookoff held yesterday, Saturday May 5, was a great success. That was because Mike and Kathy Freedman worked tirelessly in the last few months getting cooks, vendors and sponsors so the Enfield Food Shelf can help feed hundreds of families in the area. Mike and Kathy spent a lot of time on local TV and radio and the public responded. There was a lot of chili tasted and lots more judged. The site of the cookoff was the Knights of Columbus in Somers, CT, who provided a great breakfast for everyone in the morning. The weather even cooperated, in spite of the wind at times. Mike and Kathy could be seen anywhere and everywhere taking care of everyone's needs along with the many wonderful volunteers. Chief Judge was Dave Lorenz and Chief Scorekeeper was Audrey Falkowski. Also assisting in the judging tent was Sharon Willard, Steve Falkowski and Cindy Lorenz. We look forward to next year.
