2009 ICS WORLDS CHAMPIONSHIPS

.

TLC turns up the heat with ULTIMATE CHILI CHALLENGE

.

Five spicy chefs race against the clock- and each other- in hopes of winning the title of 'ICS World's Champion Red Chili' and the $25,000 grand prize in TLC's ULTIMATE CHILI CHALLENGE. Watch as the contestants compete in the cutthroat 'Last Chance Competition' to secure a slot in the fight for the title of 'World Champion' at the "ICS World's Championship Chili Cookoff" in Charleston, West Virginia and then continue to stew up their masterpieces for the final competition.

.

Tune in Monday, May 3rd

.

at 10 PM, only on TLC.

.

.Check your local listing for times in your area

.

ULTIMATE CHILI CHALLENGE showcases the art of making red chili (did you know that red chili has no beans, pasta or other fillers?) and gives viewers the chance to follow five contestants as they create culinary masterpieces with help from their secret ingredients. Watch as the contestant's battle the heat- both in and out of the kitchen- to make their perfect chili.

.

The five featured contestants are seasoned veterans from around the country.

  • Don Van Lehn, a local favorite from Nitro, West Virginia, considers himself a chilihead and closely guards his winning recipe.
  • Chris Everhart from Key Largo, Florida, who is relatively new to the chili competition scene, believes that there is an art to cooking chili- with a bit of science thrown in.
  • "Mad" Mike Freedman, from Somers, Connecticut, has won nearly 100 awards, including numerous People's Choice Chili Awards.
  • Watch Bonnie Tomasek from Sedalia, Colorado, who has competed in chili competitions for over 20 years, decide if she'll compete with her 'Jungle Chili' or 'Show No Mercy,' which has previously made it to the finals.
  • Can Terry Van Lehn from Charleston, West Virginia, make a strong enough showing at the 'Last Chance Competition' to take her chili to the World's?

.

Who will be able to make an award-winning chili, worthy enough of the title "World's Best Red Chili"? Tune in May 3rd to find out.

.

ULTIMATE CHILI CHALLENGE is executive produced for TLC by Pilgrim Films.

Wild Wild West Festival

&

Southern Colorado Regionals

(Back to Backs)

.

We are going to have Back to Back Regional Cookoffs, May 15th and May 16th, in beautiful Pueblo, Colorado, during the Wild Wild West Festival, put together by the Greater Pueblo Chamber of Commerce and the Professional Bull Riders, home based here in Pueblo. This will be a fun filled event beginning Wednesday, May 12th, and ending Sunday, May 16th. More than 10,000 people per day are expected to attend this local event. There will be downtown festivals, carnival rides, a Fan Zone, marketplace booths, and live entertainment.

Saturday will be the Wild Wild West Festival Regional. After Saturday's cookoff, there will be a cook's party at the Riverside Bar of Pueblo (my sister's establishment), with munchies, beer, and a cash bar for any other adult beverage. I will provide directions at Saturday's cookoff.

Sunday will be the Southern Colorado Regional, home of the first World's Green Chili Championship, started right here in Pueblo.

Because of regulations with the Pueblo Health Department, People's Choice chili has to be made on site, not brought from home. We would appreciate all of you making People's Choice, since it is our only money maker for the Charity on the days of the cookoffs. Also, there will a $100 prize each day for the People's Choice winner.

We will be located between B and C Street on historic Union Avenue. Set up time will be from 7:00 to 8:00 A.M. both days. You will be able to unload on Union, and then park your vehicle just around the corner on B Street. Chief Judge will be Bob Plager, and Chief Scorekeeper will be Kathy Plager.

The entry fees will be $35.00 for Red Chili, $30.00 for Chili Verde, and $15.00 for Salsa. We will waive one entry fee for non ICS members, if they pay their ICS membership fee. Prize money each day will be $300.00 for 1st, $200.00 for 2nd, and $100.00 for 3rd, for both Red and Chili Verde, and $100.00 for 1st in Salsa. Best Booth and People's Choice will receive $100.00 each day. All the winners will advance to the 2010 World's Championship.

Turn in times will be 12:00 P.M. for Salsa, 1:00 P.M. for Chili Verde, and 2:30 P.M. for Red Chili. People's Choice will start at 12:00 P.M. The Cooks Meeting will be at 9:00 A.M. Light your fires for Chili Verde at 10:00 A.M., and 11:30 A.M. for Red Chili.

The location is easy to find. From I-25 North or South, take the 1st Street exit, and head west. At the second stop light, turn left on South Main, until you get to C Street. Turn right, and follow the cookoff signage to Union Avenue. After you unload, you can park around the corner on B Street.

I am still trying to get a host hotel for Chili Cooks. I will let you know if I find one. Look forward to seeing all of you in May!

Upcoming Back-to-Back

.

South Florida Regional Cookoffs

NEED (a few more) RED COOKS

.

This weekend - Saturday April 24 and Sunday April 25 - there will be a couple of outstanding cookoffs in South Florida (Palm Beach County). I am referring to the Acreage Music and Chili Fest's "Chili Chicks Regional" and "Acreage Regional".

.

I am posting this asking that, those of you thinking about it and who have not yet signed up will do so shortly…or at least let us know you're coming.

.

You want cook friendly and family friendly great cookoff(s)? Let me count the ways…how about the following incomplete list:

.

Discount hotel

.

Friday night party with free beer, outstanding band, the best chicken wings Marshall & I have ever had, and a special show by The Chili Chicks

.

Overnight security – set up and tear down once; cook twice

.

Common tent for those traveling

.

Zillions of things for the young ones to do; this year they are even including carnival rides for them

.

Outstanding live entertainment; to include the several performances by the recently crowned World Champion Line Dancing team – "The Chili Chicks"…many of you got a chance to see them at the 2009 WCCC in Charleston (before they became World Champions in Nashville).

.

By the way, both of the cookoffs' last year's Red winners made the Finals Table at the 2009 World and one of the two – Doug Roy – is the defending "Second in the World in Red"…I don't think many of last years' back-to-back cookoffs can claim both winners making the Finals, plus one podium.

.

Anyway, if you were here last year you know how good the cookoffs were (and Robert promises better this year). If you couldn't join us last year, take my word for it – good stuff.

.

Hope to see many or you there.

.

Sergei Kowalchik

Chief Judge

SUNDAY - Apr. 18, 2010

CHILI SHOWDOWN DISTRICT CHILI COOKOFF

Sunday, May 2, 2010 the day after California State.

Hosted by the Lancaster & Rosamont Chamber of Commerce at Antelope Valley Fairgrounds. In conjunction with the cookoff there will be an Antique Car Show, Remote-Controlled Electric Airplanes: Build Your Model Plane and Flea Market. If memory serves me right last year the Flea Market was huge. So if you have been unable to find that precious heirloom that you just can't live without it will probably be there! Also lots of vendors with chow and other goodies. There is an RV park with full hookups right there on the Fairgrounds. I've once again been in contact with my buddies down at Area 86 to see if I can get them to fire up their Biogrephressurewhethercomptoller to prevent any untoward atmospheric disturbances (I do not want to use the W Word). If for some reason the boys at Area 86 can't get the darn thing to work our host is working on getting the cooks in a protected area. I know that some of you will say it's just a district why bother. But here's some good reason for you to bother. A district win will get you a free ride to last chance at the World. And our current World Champion came from last chance. Double district win means you cook in the WCCC, and believe me I have hung many double district signs at the World. Now if that doesn't get your motor running, the MONEY well!

Red-First-Place: $1000 Second Place: $300 Third-Place: $100

Green-First-Place: $400 Second-Place: $200 Third-Place: $100

Salsa-First-Place: $100 Second-Place: $50

People's Choice: $50

Chief Judge: Capt. Jim Maehl

Chief Scorekeeper: Donnie Gordon

Master of Ceremonies: Mark Davey

Chairperson: Mark Davey 661-974-8739 or 661-802-1178

mdavey@avfcu.org

To register go to the Lancaster Chili Showdown web site www.thechilishowdown.com

If you need directions contact me: Capt. Jim chiliheadjim@aol.com or my cell phone at: 702-336-1941

Remember May 1 California State Chili Cookoff on Saturday at San Bernardino and May 2 Chili Showdown in Lancaster on Sunday. And you thought only baseball had a freeway series!

Good luck and good chili cooking, Capt. Jim

Travelin' Chiliheads News

Although the following may seem presumptuous,

we wanted to share it with our many chili friends.

.

A new experience for us is that on Monday, April 19, 2010,

we will be in the audience of Dancing with the Stars

(8 p.m. Eastern/Pacific Time Zones and 7 p.m. Central/Mountain Time Zones).

Barbara's daughter Deanna, who is a real estate lawyer for Disney,

was able to get us tickets.

Deanna informed us that we are on the Disney VIP list

which we hope means good seats in camera range!

Travelin' Chiliheads,

Charlie & Barbara Ward

P.S. We will not be wearing our chili cookoff apparel!
