FRIDAY - May 9, 2008

SILVER STATE REGIONAL
To all our Chilihead Friends:
.
We really need to know who, if anyone, is coming to Pahrump to cook in the Silver State Regional on May 17th.
As of this date we only have 1 Salsa, 3 Green and 3 Red, that does not bode well for helping us keep our Regional. PLEASE, PLEASE let us know if you are coming to Pahrump to cook, or if you would rather go elsewhere, that is okay too, just let us know so we can make plans.

25th Annual Route 66 Regional

The 25th Annual Silver Anniversary Route 66 Regional Chili Cookoff is just 6 weeks away. A block of rooms has been set aside at both the Fairfield Inn(928-773-1300) and the Holiday Inn Express(928-714-1000) for cooks and judges.

Special prize money is up for grabs this year, with awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in Traditional Red Chili, Chili Verde and Salsa. Prize money is also there for Peoples Choice and Best Local Red. There is also a plaque for Best Booth.

Returning cooks, please be sure your health permit is still active, for new cooks and those who need to renew their permits(one cook per booth must have one) you can go to http://www.az-hospitality.org/food/ to get it.

Don't forget, Sarah is making a beautiful chili quilt wall hanging and all you have to do to have a chance is have an entry. If you are doing all 3, you'll have 3 entries!

.

There is a cooks and judges dinner party at one of our sponsors, Salsa Brava on Friday evening at 6:30 pm, we have the enclosed patio reserved.

.

Up here in Arizona's North Country, we are shooting for 66 total entries for our Silver Anniversary. We figure that'll take 30 reds, 18 verdes and 18 salsas. We know it's a bold thought, but we'd love to have you here to try and make those numbers! All red and verde cooks get a free anniversary T-shirt.

.

After you have finished with our cookoff, don't forget that on Sunday, June 15, is the 37th Annual Arizona State Championship at the Mazatzal Casino in Payson, a beautiful hour and 45 minute drive from Flagstaff. They too, have awesome prize money and run a great event, with Dick Swenberger as Chief Judge.

.

Until then, best of luck on the chili trail, hope it leads you to Flagstaff, AZ on June 14!

Thanks, Paul Whitney

SUNDAY - May 4, 2008

NEW ENGLAND REGIONAL

The New England Chili Cookoff had typical New England weather. It was cold, damp, misting at times, and did I mention cold? Apparently the locals are very used to this weather, because they came out and had a great time tasting some of the 67 chilis from booths manned by cooks from Maine to Virginia to Texas. Mike and Kat Freedman did a great job rounding up sponsors and vendors. There was not only lots of chili, but some great wings in one booth and some great ribs in another. The judging was run by Steve Falkowski and I was assisted in scorekeeping by several able ladies. We could not have done it without their help. We had lots of help setting up the tables too, thanks to some of the volunteers.

And the winners:

SIN CITY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE COOKOFF

By: Bobbie Gaul

.

Well, the ICS made history today. They had the first ever sanctioned cookoff at a Brothel. Namely, the Chicken Ranch in Pahrump, NV. Norm & Bobbie Gaul were Chief Judge and Chief Scorekeeper. Everything was done very tastefully, and everyone was clothed. And, as a matter of fact the girls in the Ms. Chili Pepper contest held at the World's Chili Championship Cookoff in the past had fewer clothes on then the girls at this chili cookoff.

We had 9 Chili cooks and 9 Salsa Cooks. The weather co-operated and it was a beautiful day, except we had wind that came and went. But it was warm. Bob Wiseman will be writing an article for Fiery Foods and BBQ Magazine about this cookoff, with pictures. It will be in the July/August issue or the next one. Look for the magazine at your favorite magazine counter. The day included a Golf Tournament, and small car show with vendors and food. Next year it will be held the weekend of April 25-27th, so mark your calendars, this is not one you want to miss. Now for the important stuff:

.

SALSA:

3RD Pl. Cindy Haught

2nd Pl. Sheila Beller

1st Pl. Gene Beller

.

RED CHILI

4th Pl. Lenn Deevers

3rd Pl. Cindy Haught

2nd Pl. Jodi Wiseman

1st Pl. Ray Bogart

Norm and I also gave a prize of $100.00 and a certificate to the best first time cook and that person was Sheri Shelton of Las Vegas.

People's Choice was won by Marty Leitner of Sandy Valley, NV. It was good to see Marty cooking again. She has been on the chili circuit for many years and we are always happy to see her come out and cook.

(We hope that some of our friends will come out to support us at the Silver State Regional on May 17th. We would hate to lose this one. This is a well run cookoff and there are also goody bags for the cooks.)

.

.

.

The Naked Truth: A Day Cooking Chili at a Brothel

Howdy Buckaroos and Buckarettes:

Did you ever cook competition chili at a nudist colony? Seriously, folks, have you?

.

Well, I have several times. In fact, on the West Coast, cookoffs at clothes optional places are not uncommon. They are interesting affairs and quite revealing to say the least.

How about cooking a spicy "pot of red" at a brothel? ................ I didn't stutter, folks, A BROTHEL!

.

Hmm, now that's a different cat in the bag. Who ever heard of such a thing? And a sanctioned cookoff at that. Some folks I know would consider an event like that disgusting and dastardly (..... chuckle .....)? (Good gawd, Gertie, what's next?).

So I asked myself the question " Would you, Bob, would you cook at a hooker house?" The answer; "Ah, what the hell, I'll have a go at it." And the bride, Coyote Jodi, also thinks it would be a real hoot.

.

So tomorrow the little woman and I will be searing meat, making hearty broth and throwing in the hot red powders at the Famous Chicken Ranch over the hill from Las Vegas near Pahrump, Nevada. And, from what I've heard there are quite a few other chili teams heading there. Sounds like a party to me.

Now that's not the end of it - I've been asked by Fiery Foods Magazine to write an article about it. So, along with the chili gear I'll be taking the Nikon and my writing tools and imagination.

If you happen to be in the neighborhood come on by tomorrow- May, 3 - and cook up a batch of chili. There's a few dollars to the winners of red and salsa. Oh, yeah! You just might end up in the story - it will be out in the July/August issue of Fiery Foods.

Pssst ..... what you do there, stays there ........... giggle, giggle!

Dodging rattlers along the Old Spanish Trail,

Bob Wiseman
