Litchfield, IL. District

"Party in the Park" District Chili Cookoff in Litchfield, IL. was again another easy going fun filled cookoff day.
This little cookoff was stared by Joe DeFrates in 1981 and has been going as a District every year since.
I took over for Joe in 1985 and have been doing it since and this is one of my favorite cookoffs.
This is a family event with all local Clubs, Organizations, Schools, etc., and produced by the Litchfield Chamber of Commerce.
What a great bunch of people with all there Midwest hospitality......Doesn't get any better than this!
We had a beautiful day as the weather was perfect. Sunny day....80 degrees and a slight northeast breeze with no humidity........July in Illinois!! What's wrong here????
.
SALSA 10 Contestants
12 judges
3rd = Jim Schmedeke 10 points (Clinton, IL.)
2nd = Joni Deere 13 points (Pana, IL.)
1st = Tom Calvert 21 points (Taylorville, IL.) 2005 Salsa World Champion
.
CHILI 14 Contestants
17 judges
4th = Helen McAuley 12 points (Springfield, IL.)
3rd = Les Eastep 12 points (Rochester, IL.) won tie break
2nd = Larry Eastep 13 points (Springfield, IL.)
1st = Cathy Schmedeke 17 points (Clinton, IL.)
.
As you can see the judging was very close because of all the very good chili cooks.
Everyone had a good time and looking forward to next year.
Please don't tell anyone about this fun little cookoff. It is one of the last hidden gems!
.
Congratulations to all the contestants......They are all winners!

Colorado Back 2 Backs

The Rocky Mountain Regional and Colorado State Championships are just around the corner on Aug. 11/12 on the ski slopes of Winter Park, Colorado. Winter Park is just an 90 minute shot from the airport and features a variety of lodging plus activities for the entire family. Past champions include many who have then gone on to "trophy" at the World's. Need to secure your spot in Omaha, then try Winter Park's B2B's.

.

.

.

.

Canadian Back 2 Backs

Alberta Championship and Western Candian Regional

Just a few days until our cookoffs and we still have room for a few more cooks. Wild Bill Torvi will again be on the deck as DJ for the two days of the cookoff. We are still having the Cooks party at our house on Friday night and will be cooking beef brisket and pork butt.
.
Because of the fact that some people were going to come and then won competitions in the meantime (lucky them!) or have other family and work commitments and cannot compete Randy and I have turned over the Head Judging and Score Keeping to George Glover and family. They are experienced and have judged and ran many local cookoffs for a number of years (Ranchmans, Can-Am, etc.). This will enable Randy and I to cook to ensure that we have enough cooks for all categories. We wanted to let the chili cooks network know ahead of time what was happening and to reassure everyone that things will be handled properly and above board. Now we just have to scramble and get meat cut.
.
So... if anyone still needs to qualify and wants to come on up and cook in a fun filled back to back please let us know.
Joy and Randy

WCCC Golf Tourney
.
This year, once again, we will be having our golf tourney at Iron Horse Golf Club in Ashland, NE. It will be on Thursday, October 4, with the first group teeing off at noon. This is a very fun golf course, with elevation changes, a great staff and a good test of golf. If you haven't played in the tourney in a few years, why not make the plans to play this year. At this time we don't know if we will be in Omaha next year, so this may be your last chance to have fun on this course. Take an extra day, come out to Omaha early and join us in this traditional lead-off event to the WCCC. You can reach me at GolfNChili@aol.com
