Laughlin Back-to-Back Cookoffs - by Karen Ray
Wind is not a friend to the chili cooks. Although it was very windy on Friday as the cooks chose their spots and began to set up, all of the weather reports indicated that it would diminish for the next day---NOT! A very windy Saturday greeted the cooks as they ventured out to complete their setup and begin the Laughlin Regional Chili Cookoff. But chili cooks are hearty folk, tolerant of most weather conditions. Many of those present had faced much worse. We heard stories of hurricanes, tornados, snow and sleet and more.
.
A total of 92 individual cooks presented their culinary efforts for judging on Saturday . Thirteen states were represented: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Missouri, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Texas, Utah and Washington. Many of these entered more than one contest. There were 29 Salsa competitors, 44 Chili Verde contestants, and 74 brave souls vied for the Traditional Red Chili title. A lot was at stake---very good prize money in all categories. And the winners each day in Chili Verde and Traditional Red Chili claimed a beautiful Director's Chair commemorating their wins.
.
The public was sparse because of the wind. But "Bulls Eye" from Bullhead City entertained, as they have in the past. There were raffles all day, both days, for a wonderful selection of prizes---more later. The judges were varied and excellent---more later. At the end of the day the winners were:
.
Salsa:
3rd, Jim Jordan CA
2nd, Dave Schulman CT
1st, Russell Barnes CA, Advancing to the World's Championship
.
Chili Verde:
5th, Gary Nelson NV
4th, Larry Weltikol NV
3rd, Bob Wiseman NV
2nd, Gail Donovan OH
1st, Bob Hall IL---this is Bob's 4th time to win Chili Verde at this cookoff! And he advances to the World's Championship
.
Traditional Red Chili:
5th, Mark Haught NV
4th, Mike Ford CA
3rd, George Anderson WA
2nd, Mike Stewart CA
1st, David Thomas CA, Advancing to the World's Championship
.
On Saturday night all of the weather reports said that the winds would be reduced---WRONG!! If anything, they were heavier on Sunday morning for the Nevada State Championship. When we went out to the cookoff , the canopies were mostly gone and the cooks were huddled where they could find shelter. On a positive note, there is a plan for future cookoffs, if this situation occurs again! Unfortunately, it could not be implemented on such short notice.
.
The ranks were somewhat decimated; only 79 individual cooks remained and one less state was represented. Interestingly, the temperatures were warmer than on Saturday, and the wind velocity varied as you walked around the cookoff. Again, "Bulls Eye" entertained the cooks and the public. The ongoing raffles were well received by cooks, judges and public. Nearly $1,400 was raised for the charity, "We Care Cancer", which is a local hospice for terminal cancer patients. Raffle prizes were donated from many sources. Dennis Macklin gave a very nice Kohler faucet. And a donated TV set was donated back then auctioned for $175 for the charity. Perhaps the happiest raffle recipient was Starr Anderson, who won the lovely chili afghan made by Leah Wieland. Emotionally, George and Starr said that it was special to them, as they still have one of the original crocheted chili peppers from Leah many years ago!
.
Like the chili cooks, judges came from many areas to lend their expertise and credibility to the cookoffs. Current World's Champion J. R. Knudson and 1987 World's Champion Margo Knudson, Fred Wieland, Ormly Gumfudgin, Roy Palmer, Dave and Kathy Hipskind (the new ICS Chief Judge and Scorekeeper), and 1994 World's Champion Bill Ray are only a few deserving of mention. The Lake Havasu Chili Checkers were outstanding volunteers and assisted in all areas, as needed. Chairpersons were Gary and Dawn Nehf (Laughlin Regional) and Sonny Allen (Nevada State). Chief Scorekeepers were Karen Ray (Laughlin Regional) and Leah Wieland (Nevada State). Leah has officially retired from this capacity; Donnie Gordon will assume scorekeeping duties next year. Special thanks are appropriate to the Golden Nugget for hosting and supporting these events through their Director of Hotel Operations, Patty Osterhout.
.
The climax of this weekend is always the races among the "scooter people". There were five contestants: Ormly Gumfudgin, Desert Dawn Nehf, Mike McAfee for Pop Baker, Starr Anderson and "Luggage-Cart Patty" Osterhout. After lots of foolishness, a little good natured cheating and an outstanding performance by Ormly's pit crew, Ormly was declared the 2007 Scooter Race Championship.
.
Oh, yes, the Nevada State chili winners were:
.
Salsa (20 entries):
5th, Louis Gonzales TX
4th, Sheila Beller CA
3rd, Shawn Huffman, UT (a brand new cook!)
2nd, Susie Decker CA
1st, Jodi Wiseman---a Nevada State Champion from Nevada!
.
Chili Verde (33 entries):
5th, Larry Weltikol NV tied with Bill Donovan OH
4th, Ron Judson CA
3rd, Mark Haught, NV
2nd, Karen Angotti, CA
1st Jim Beaty CA, advancing to the World's Championship
.
Traditional Red Chili (61 entries):
5th, Harry Robinson CA
4th, Eileen Beaty CA
3rd, Allene Macklin CA
2nd, Bob Plager CO
1st, John Medcraft CA, representing the State of Nevada at the World's Championship
.
See ya next year!

March Into Spring Regional - April 14
.
For those of you that have not heard, the March Into Spring Regional Cook-off has a new date and venue. This cook-off has grown so much, that we had to change locations!
.
The cook-off will take place on Main Street in Mt. Airy, MD on April 14, 2007. If you've been checking your chili calendar, you'll know that this is the first cook-off of the year in the Mid-Atlantic area. Mt. Airy is a great town and the Main Street shops are fabulous! If you are coming from out of town and would like to stay overnight, please check for hotels in Westminster, Frederick, or Germantown, depending on your direction. There are no hotels in Mt. Airy, but all of the above cities are within a 20-30 minute drive of the cook-off site.
.
The first 35 cooks that register and pay in advance will be guarunteed fantastic goody bags, so register early! Cooks parking will be VERY close to the cookoff site, and breakfast will be provided to all cooks. There will also be a buffalo wing eating contest this year.
.
We also have a new chairperson, Barbara Corbalis. Ghon and I will not be cooking this year and I am working with Barbara this year so that I can turn over all duties to her for next year. She is doing a fantastic job - but is new, so bear with her if you have questions! We will have more details finalized over the next month, including fabulous prizes, so stay tuned!
.
Hope to see all our chili friends, new and old, in Mt. Airy on April 14!

Birth Announcement
Paul and Sarah Whitney would like to announce the birth of the newest member of Wild Whit's Snakepit Chili Team. Paige Ashton Whitney was born on January 4th at 7:49 am. She weighed 6 lbs, 3 oz. She was 19 and a half inches long. Both mother and daughter are doing fine. We came home from the hospital on Friday and have had a lovely few days together. For those of you just dying to meet her, she'll have her coming out party at the back to backs in Phoenix in March. Best of luck to you all, Happy New Year!

Time for South Florida Chili

.

Well, it’s that time again. Three (3) South Florida WCCC Qualifiers within two weeks; two of them back-to back.

.

99.9 Kiss Country Chili Cookoff on Sunday January 28th at CV Smith Park in Pembroke Pines (Broward County). This is a HUGE EVENT on its 22nd year; for illustration, this year entries will be “limited” to 84 teams…

.

For a great promotional/marketing video, go to www.wkis.com, click on “Click here for more information, then click on “Click here for the Chili Cookoff Video”. Turn up the volume; it’s about 10 minutes long and I believe you’ll enjoy it (Carol & Vickie, recommend taking a look…talk about great marketing).

.

Entertainment is World Class (think of it as a concert with a chili cookoff). Paid public attendance is well north of 45,000 (that’s forty five thousand) – great for the Boys and Girls Club of Broward County who is the beneficiary.

.

Top quality country music goes on the entire day, with the advertised main featured acts consisting of multiple headliners, each who in most cases would be the sole main attraction at a concert. This year’s featured performers (six headliners): Montgomery Gentry, Trace Adkins, Sugarland, Darryl Worley, Taylor Swift and Jo Dee Mesina…WOW!

.

Team entry fee is a bit pricey ($125), but it includes four tickets to the entertainment - $38 ea. retail. However, this doesn’t seem to deter the (principally) local teams who come year after year to party with family, friends, neighbors (many buy additional tickets beyond the four allotted) and, oh yes, cook chili.

.

Party they do; starting at dawn (cooking breakfast) and going all day to include multiple grills for fixing lunch etc., it is quite a show. The Booths and Showmanship are incredible; sort of brings back memories to some of us “long time” (read older) ICS members…

.

This year, Salsa has been added to Traditional Red. For all you non-local ICS cooks who are planning on attending the 2007 Super Bowl (in Miami the following Sunday), a great opportunity for an early qualifier!

.

If you can’t make the 99.9 Kiss Country Cookoff, but still have a hankering to combine a South Florida winter vacation with some chili cooking, have we got a deal for you! Back-to-back qualifiers over one weekend.

Chili in the Village on Saturday, February 10th at Pinecrest Gardens in Miami Dade County (next to Coral Gables).

Salsa, Verde and Traditional Red qualifiers in a lovely, rain forest type location, previously described by ICS cook Marilyn Frederick as “the most beautiful place I’ve cooked chili”. Pinecrest Gardens is the former location of the Miami Parrot Jungle, which the Village of Pinecrest (home of Dwayne Wade, 2006 NBA Finals MVP for you non-NBA fans) took over when the Parrot Jungle moved to Watson Island.

The cookoff also includes a “Best of Miami Chili” Restaurant Competition, which is judged separately. As we’ve all experienced, this takes care of “feeding the crowd” until your “chili is ready”, which makes for a better all around experience for everybody.

A very “family friendly” event, this year, the cookoff is associated with a new (for the cookoff) not-for-profit organization – “Informed Families” http://informedfamilies.org/ . This is one of the premier organizations in South Florida (all of Florida actually), whose mission of “Helping Kids Grow Up Safe, Healthy and Drug Free” enjoys broad support at all levels of community, business and government.

Florida Keys Chili Cookoff on Sunday, February 11th at Rowell’s Marina in Key Largo.

Salsa, Verde and Traditional Red qualifiers in the northernmost of the beautiful Florida Keys. This great waterfront location (Florida Bay side – right side going south) is on the northern end of Key Largo, right on the Overseas Highway (US-1) around Mile Marker 105; it is about an hour’s drive from the Saturday cookoff in Pinecrest Gardens.

In previous events, many out-of town cooks have stayed in motels at Florida City, where the last few years organizers have arranged for cookoff special rates (I assume again, but I’ll follow up to confirm). Florida City is where the Florida Turnpike ends and it is about half-way between the two cookoffs.

This cookoff also has a “cookoff within a cookoff”; the non-ICS “amateur division” (by inference, this makes the ICS cookoff the “professional division”) which is judged separately. Once again, this provides volumes of chili for the crowd until your “chili is ready”.

The cookoff is put on by the Rotary Club, who do a superb job (ask any cooks who have cooked in the past) and for whom it is one of their top fundraisers (net $30,000+++; which gives you a feel for the size of the crowd). I expect this year they will make significantly more; the crowd has grown every year and this year, they have also added a Saturday concert/party with a “Texas Hold Em” tournament.

For any cooks considering flying, two South Florida airports are nearby: Miami International (MIA) and Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International (FLL). FLL is a little further North (about 20 miles, all Interstate), but it is normally less expensive because practically every discount airline flies there; it also has one of the most convenient rental car locations (especially if you fly Southwest; you walk across a pedestrian foot bridge).

Well, that’s it for now. All the cookoff are on the ICS website; hope to see a lot of cooks at these great cookoffs and perhaps this year we’ll get to Preliminary/Finals Tables (over 25 cooks) for the back-to-back events,

Sergei Kowalchik

Chief Judge

Silver State Regional - Pahrump , NV - by Norm Gaul
We had a meeting this past Friday (1/5/07) with the Chairperson of the SSR and we will again have a Regional on May 19, 2007 and a District on May 20, 2007. The District is not now on the ICS web site, but will be soon. The cookoff is being moved to Petrack Park (on grass) with parking behind your cook site. Host Casino will be the same (Saddle West Casino & Hotel). The cookoff site is just 1.5 miles from the Casino.
