After a 4 year absence, the Vermont State Chili Cookoff is back!! The cookoff is being held at the Fischer School on East Arlington Rd. in beautiful Arlington. The cookoff, on Sat. The cookoff will feature red, green and salsa competitions, with the winners qualifying for the World Championships. There will also be Peoples Choice, Best Firehouse Chili and Best Booth. There will be music during the day and fireworks at night.

The Fire Company has worked hard on this carnival for years, and hopes that the chili cookoff adds a little spice to the event.

Fire on the Mountain Regional

The 16th Annual Fire on the Mountain Regional Cookoff was held July 6th and 7th at Snowshoe West Virginia.

.

As has become almost monotonously routine, the Snowshoe Mountain Resort folks did their usual superb job in putting on this very large cookoff. Even the weather deity cooperated, with three of the most gorgeous days imaginable.

.

If you were there, you know. If you were not, imagine sunny blue skies with some puffy white clouds highlighting; unlimited visibility enhancing the spectacular panorama of the surrounding mountains; an invigorating morning chill, followed by a mid-day in the mid 70s, followed by wonderful evening chill…if it can get any better, I don't know how.

.

Almost 80 cooks (16 new ICS cooks – see Carol smile) and a ton of spectators came to enjoy this special event at the top of the mountain. And enjoy they did; with continuous entertainment on stage, a myriad of things for the younger set to do – rock wall climbing, face painting, trampolines and bungee, chair lift rides, paddle boats on the lake at the bottom of the ride, to name but a few – all complementing the wonderful chili and salsa provided by the cooks.

.

The afternoon of Friday the 6th was dedicated to the Salsa and Chili Verde competition. This was followed by a great cook's party that evening in the Village center; the party adjoining a "Block Party" for everybody, but with controlled entrance to just the cooks/judges for the food and "beverages".

.

On Saturday the 7th (07 – 07 – 07), the Traditional Red Regional cookoff took place. In addition to all the previously mentioned which make Fire on the Mountain such a special cookoff, the cooks compete for the largest 1st Prize of the circuit outside of the World Championship - $10,000.

.

To say that the competition (in all three events) was intense, would be a gross understatement. Over half of the Salsa and Verde cooks were former World qualifiers (to include a former Verde World Champion – Jeff Nester); over a third of the Traditional Red cooks were also former World qualifiers.

.

Now for the results:

Friday

Salsa - 22 cooks

3rd Place Jerry Workman

2nd Place Larry Lentz

1st Place Christian Parker (will represent Fire on the Mountain at the WCCC)

.

Chili Verde - 22 cooks

3rd Place Christian Parker

2nd Place Gail Donovan

1st Place Dave Cobb (will represent Fire on the Mountain at the WCCC)

.

.

Saturday

Best Booth Headhunter Chili

Showmanship Pirates of the Chili Bean

.Traditional Red - 69 cooks

Actually, there were 71 registered. However, one team decided early (around stove lighting time) that they were having such a good time, that they did not want the concentrating on their turn-in chili to interfere with their partying; a second cook (former World qualifier, who had cooked Friday) withdrew because of a physical ailment.

.

Finals Table – 17 cooks

Kevin Simmons, Christian Parker, Dick Steinert, Jim Parker, Carrie Lentz, Laurin Staley, Larry Lentz, Gail Donovan, Madeline Galford, Jessie Forbes, Howard Kahle, Sandra Moyers, Ed Garner, Jeremy Sheets, Jack Ware, Kim Eckley, Ghon Eckley

.

Red Rookie of the Year Howard Khale

("Whitey Blakemore Memorial Award)

Red Best of W Virginia Ed Garner

.

Places

4th Place Kevin Simmons

3rd Place Ed Garner

2nd Place Larry Lentz

1st Place Carrie Lentz* (will represent Fire on the Mountain at the WCCC)

.

*Carrie is the first three time winner of Fire on the Mountain.

If you expand that to the "Lentz Chili Dynasty", the number of wins is (I believe) something like seven…even to the most casual observer, it is obvious that they are doing something right

.

In summary, a superb event thanks to terrific job by everybody involved: Chairperson and organizers, volunteers and, as always, the cooks without whom there would not be a cookoff

Sergei Kowalchik

Head Chili – Chief Judge

COOK'S CORNER REGIONAL COOKOFF

By Bobby Gaul

Well, Cook's Corner Regional will remain a regional for next year. The Chairperson Rhonda and the owner of the bar were very happy with the turnout and are looking forward to next year which we hope will be bigger and better. I am also told that the dirt area is supposed to be grass next year. (rumor only)

The day turned out to be pretty warm, I think in the 90's, but everyone managed to stay as cool as possible. Beats the 115 degrees that Pahrump had on Wednesday.

I really want to thank the Plager's and the Swenberger's for traveling so far to help out in the judging area, we really appreciated having them there. It was also great to see Karen Cooley again. I hope we get to see more of her at other cookoffs. And of course a thank you should go to Carol & Dave Hancock for coming so far to help in the judging area, LOL This was probably the second of two cookoffs that are close to home for those two. And of course the Gumfudgins were there with their smiling faces. We are always happy to see them. Well I like to keep these things short so on the important part.

What a great day it was in the town of Millville New Jersey on Saturday, 07-07-07. A chili cookoff, festival, canoe races, and boat cruises. Sunny, in the upper 80's with a light breeze. A great job was done by Allison Corson, chairwomen of the event, from the Millville Glasstown Arts District. With 25 entries in traditional red, this event will be a regional in 2008! Thanks to all the cooks who attended this event and made it a success. Millville was an old glass manufacturing town until about 10 years ago, many of the companies that were located in Millville began operations in the early 1800's. There is a lot of history in this old town located on the scenic Maurice River. Below are the results for the chili cookoff.

.

An ICS Sanctioned Regional Competition that Attracts Chili Cookers from 4 Western States. Winners will advance to the World Championship Cook-off with winners from other Regional Cook-offs across the USA, Canada and Mexico.

.

On Saturday, July 21st prepare your taste buds to be aroused, amazed, and maybe even burned to smithereens with mouth watering and explosively original chili.

.

With about 40 chili cookers competing this year - each in their own booth with some outrageous titles such as "Hemorrhoid Heaven Chili" and "Double Flush Chili" - expect to laugh, cry, and have a down right good time at this year's Chili Cook-off which will be held in the Village at the Bartlett Parking Lot from 10:00am to 6:00pm.

.

The competition will officially begin at noon with the sounding of a fire siren. All preparation and cooking for this event has to happen on site and they are only given three hours of actual cooking time with the end signaled by another siren at 3:00pm. At 4:00pm will be the awards ceremony.

.

Also mixed into the day will be other entertaining competitions such as :

the Shoot 'n Holler

Mr. Hot Sauce and

the Wiskerino

.

Hearses, hussies, and huge toilets make up this eclectic scene as chili cookers get down and dirty to compete for the coveted 1st place title and $500.00 red chili prize, and a 1st place green chili prize of $150.00.

.
