MARIA AUSTIN'S HEALTH UPDATE 3-14-08
Dear Friends and Fam-Lee
Round 7 is going to be a good round for Maria. Like I said before, I hate to get too excited about good days, because of the let downs (sometimes) to follow. Maria was able with some help from myself and the PT to sit on the side of the bed yesterday, Hurray! She was wobbly as a person would be after 8 1/2 weeks on her back. I pray it's going to be all good from here on out, but I know we will have some minor setbacks along the way. She seems, so far to except the trech, I do believe it will speed her recovery. I pray she will be able to eat and speak soon and they can remove it. Her blood pressure and breathing have improved, and her lungs are getting better. Praise God for everyday we have her with us. Thank all of you again, for your Phone Calls, Cards, Prayers and Good Wishes, they mean a lot to me and my Fam-Lee. Please don't stop Praying.

Keep Cooking that Great Chili.. I will be back out there soon on the Chili Trail. I sure do miss the competition and friends. ( maybe a Shoot and Holler here and there).

I also want to thank all the Cooks that cooked at Bill and Karen Ray's house Saturday. They donated all the Chili that was cooked to the Hospital crew that are working with Maria. I did tell the nurses, that they will only get the Chili when Maria gets out the right way. Also thanks for all the Big Hugs! I needed them.

Hi everyone
Randy and I are contemplating moving the two regional chili cookoffs to the Memorial Day weekend in May and are trying to get a sense of how many cooks might be interested in making the journey to
We are working on our sponsors for prize money but doing this basically three months earlier than planned will bring its own set of problems. It is also our daughter Lauren's graduation weekend.
I had a fall in November and am currently having to use a walker/can/electric scooter to get around. I see a sports medicine doctor next week to try and start to figure our why my right leg is not working properly.

We will provide a large tent for any cook who wants to use it (first come first serve on space) and we will encourage the cooks to bring and decorate their own tents. The Silver State Regional is fast approaching (May 17, 2008) and we are in the planning stages for this annual event. Norm & Bobbie Gaul will be the Chief Judge and Chief Scorekeeper respectively for the cookoff. For planning purposes we would like to know if you are planning to participate, we will be doing salsa $15 entry, chili verde $25 entry and traditional red chili $35 entry. So if you are planning on cooking or judging please let us know so we can be prepared. People's choice chili will be prepared by the local merchants. The cookoff will be held at

There will be a BBQ at the park on Friday, May 16th from 6-8 PM for all Cooks and Judges. Price is $5.00 per person with a no host bar.

We don't have a host hotel this year but you can call the local hotels for rates, maybe if you mention the chili cookoff they will reduce them (no promises) the numbers for the hotels are:

I will be on site on Friday May 16, 2008 around noon, if you wish to reserve a spot. On Saturday the 17th, set up time will start around 6:30am. Cooks meeting for all contests will be at 9:00am. If you are flying in and need tables they will be available, but please let us know so we have enough for those that need them. You can register to cook through the ICS web site or let me know if you plan on attending.

Bobbie and I will have an after cookoff party for cooks and judges (May 17, 2008) at our house, maps will be available at the cookoff. Food and drinks will be provided. We are looking forward to seeing all that come to support the Silver State Regional.
