River Resorts Regional - Submitted by Karen Ray
Hello, Chili Friends.
Next Saturday, November 18th, will be the 20th Annual Lost Lake Resort chili cookoff. It is well received by the cooks every year, and this year will be no exception. We are on the edge of nowhere, but everybody manages to find us. We have several pre-entries through the ICS web site, and there are plenty of red cooks to maintain our Regional and plenty of chili verde and salsa cooks for a legal contest.
Those of you who have been here know what goes on. If you have not come here before here is the story: Cooks and judges begin arriving with their campers, RVs, tents or whatever on Thursday (maybe earlier). Dry camping is free, and you can cook right at your "rig". Friday night everybody does their own thing, but there is lots of socializing around the firepits at the individual encampments. (Does this sound a bit like the World cookoffs at Tropico Gold Mine? Yeah, a little bit!)
Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m. we serve complimentary Bloody Marys, Mimosas, Screwdrivers and coffee to all interested parties. This is in honor of our departed friend, Ray Little, who started this tradition at this cookoff. At 8:00 a.m. breakfast is served to the cooks and judges---fruit cup (champagne optional), bacon, sausage links, potatoes O'Brien and biscuits and gravy. This is also complimentary.
Chief Judge is Tony Dalbis, Chief Scorekeeper is Donnie Gordon and Emcee is Steve Porter. People's Choice chili is requested but not required to benefit our personal charity, English Springer Rescue America. The People's Choice contest winner will receive 50% of the total sales of of tasting cups.
At the awards ceremony there will be a presentation to Bob Brown, the owner of the Resort, of a very special quilt, made by Marilee Barrett, in honor of the 20th Anniversary of this event. Bob has sponsored the cookoff every year out of his own pocket to accomodate the chili cooks and to provide entertainment for his Resort folks.
Come out and join us. This is a unique cookoff. If you are not an RVer, Parker, AZ is only about 20 minutes away and has accomodations to fit every pocketbook. We look forward to seeing you there. By the way, the weather reports promise temperatures in the high 70s during the day and around 50 at night!
