A GREAT BIG THANK YOU

from BOBBIE GAUL

THIS IS A THANK YOU FOR ALL MY CHILIHEAD FRIENDS FROM THE EAST, WEST, NORTH AND SOUTH, THAT SPONSORED ME THIS YEAR FOR THE "RELAY FOR LIFE".

THIS IS AN EVENT THAT IS HELD IN MANY TOWNS AND STATES THROUGHOUT THE USA TO RAISE MONEY FOR THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY.

I HAVE NOW BEEN DOING THIS FOR THE LAST FOUR YEARS, AND IF IT WASN'T FOR ALL MY CHILIHEAD FRIENDS I COULDN'T RAISE THE MONEY I DO. THE TOTAL I RAISED THIS YEAR WAS ($2500.00), RAISED MOSTLY FROM CHILIHEAD FRIENDS, AND ALSO MY CROCHETED ITEMS THAT I SELL ALL YEAR LONG. THE POPULAR ITEM THIS YEAR WAS MY CROCHETED ROSES.

(If you would like a rose I make all colors and can send them to you if you pay for the shipping) ALL MONIES GO TO THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY.

ONCE AGAIN I WAS THERE ALL NIGHT LONG, FROM 6PM TO 6AM. OUR TEAM WAS THE CURVES TEAM, WE HAD 93 MEMBERS AND WON THE PRIZE FOR BIGGEST TEAM AND MOST FUNDS RAISED BY A TEAM, WHICH WAS OVER $16,000.00. I WAS JOINED BY NORM AND OUR ELDEST DAUGHTER, DIANA, (they didn't stay all night but was there for the survivor lap and the family lap).

I DIDN'T WIN AGAIN THIS YEAR FOR THE MOST FUNDS RAISED BY AN INDIVIDUAL, BUT I DID COME IN SECOND. THE FIRST PLACE WINNER WON WITH $4000.00, (HE PUT TOGETHER A GOLF TOURNAMENT.) OF COURSE THE IMPORTANT THING IS NOT WINNING BUT BEATING THIS AWFUL DISEASE. (SO BE PREPARED TO BE HIT UP FOR MONEY AGAIN NEXT YEAR, LOL)

THE TOTAL AMOUNT RAISED BY THE SMALL COMMUNITY OF PAHRUMP, NV FOR THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY WAS ABOUT $81,000.00 AND STILL COUNTING.

Message from Karen Cooley

Dear Chiliheads:

I'd like to thank you wonderful folks so very much throughout Ed's illness and recent death for your continued support. The outpour of phone calls, emails, cards, etc., etc. and even attending his memorial service meant more to me than you'll ever know -- and I know a lot of you traveled a long distance to be there. It's been a rough go of it, but I know Ed's in a better place, free of all pain and suffering. Again, many, many thanks for your thoughtfulness, caring and love. I hope to see everyone in Omaha !!

With Love, Karen C.

DOWN EAST REGIONAL &

MAINE STATE CHILI COOK OFFS
Mark your calendar for September 8 & 9 for the 9th annual Chili Fest at Wells Harbor.
One weekend.....Two chances to qualify for the World Championships.
Down East Regional on Saturday, Sept. 8 and Maine State on Sunday, Sept. 9.
This event will qualify SIX people for the WCCC in Omaha in October.
.
NOTE: Once again, you will be forced to endure the sunny, ocean breeze-filled 75-80 degree temperatures,
as in the past 8 years. And of course, if you don't like lobster, chowder, or clams, you'll be left with
only your chili and salsa to eat, all weekend long....so, maybe throw a few cans of SpaghettiO's in your chili cooler.
.
Both days, Traditional Red, Verde and Salsa, as well as People's Choice and Best Booth/Showmanship.
Prizes each day;
Red: $500, $300 and $100. ($30 entry fee)
Verde; $200, $100, $50. ($15 entry fee)
Salsa; $100 ($10 entry fee)
Peoples Choice; $200. NOTE: NO ENTRY FEE if you bring 5 gallons of Peoples Choice.

Sleepytown - 207-646-5545
For other lodging or contest questions, contact/visit the Wells Chamber of Commerce website at
www.wellschamber.org
.
Also, in conjunction with the chili contest: a pancake breakfast each day from 8-11 am, Craft Show each day from 9-4,
Live band each day from 12-3, Car show and Pie contest on Saturday, Farmer's Market on Sunday plus a 50/50 raffle
throughout the weekend with the winner announced on Sunday afternoon.
.
For those flying in for the weekend, Boston's Logan Airport (Bos)(all airlines) is 75 miles south of Wells, and Manchester, NH (Mht)
(a Southwest hub) is about the same distance, to the west.
.
Tables and chairs will be provided. The Chamber has some pop-ups available. Contact them directly to see what's available.
If they run out, contact me at
joetharvey@msn.com and I'll see what I can do to make arrangements.
.
This is one of the prettiest sites you'll ever cook at. So come up to Wells, Maine on September 8 and 9 and enjoy the weekend,
even if you're not going to cook. You can always belly-up to the Pie Contest with Skip. Or do a couple dozen oysters with Ron.
In the past, we've had many already-qualified cooks come here just to enjoy the area and help with the judging.
I welcome you all to do the same.
.
See you in Maine.....
Joe Harvey
Chief Judge
