Father’s Day proved to be a great day for a cookoff.
It was bright and sunny with temps in the low 90s.
The setting was the Mazatzal Casino in
which is in the heart of the picturesque Mogollon Rim
area of
and the rest of his crew from the Mazatzal Casino, did
a wonderful job of hosting the cookoff and seeing to
all the needs of the cooks and judges as well as providing
a fun afternoon for spectators. The Mazatzal Casino donated all of
the entry fees plus the entire proceeds from People’s Choice
tasting kit sales to Time Out, a shelter for battered women.
Chief Judge and Head Scorekeeper, Dick and Nancy Swenberger,
kept events running smoothly, with the help of all the judges
on the roster as well as those who volunteered as wranglers.
Cooks from 7 states, some from as far away as
competed. Former World’s Champions as well as a First Timer
and the whole gamut of cooks in-between contributed to the
wonderful array of entries.
A great time was had by all. And the winners were:

Shirley Judson's Service - Dave & Kathy Hipskind
A group of Shirley's extended family from the ICS attended her service yesterday. Just as she did in life, she continues to inspire ALL those she touched in her life. The love and pride of her family was evident by the outpouring of hundreds of people in attendance. Our hearts and prayers go out to them in this difficult time. It is hard to face now, but her memories will bring great comfort to them as they go on with their lives. FAMILY was all important to her. She would do anything for them. And, this included her extended ICS family. She loved her chilihead family as if they were her own.
It was a very lovely service. It was very sad, but very uplifting at the same time. She has such a wonderful family. She touched so many lives. Her son gave a fantastic eulogy. We laughed, we cried. Her grandsons spoke eloquently of their relationships with their grandmother. They spoke of her love of cooking chili and always taught them that the secert to a good chili was to stir it in the direction of their heart. Denise's stepson (maybe 8-10 years old) spoke of his new grandmother and how much he loved her. Although he had only known her 2 1/2 years, when he heard about her cancer coming back, he said, "It was the saddest day of my life." When she passed away he couldn't believe how sad he was. There was not a dry eye in the house. The church was overflowing with beautiful flowers, pictures and mementos. At the wake, they ran a video with snapshots of her life and her family with Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World" and Judy G arland singing "Over the Rainbow." It was very emotional. The Elks did a great job of hosting and the food and drink were to Shirley's liking. She would have approved.
What a Classy Lady.
We will truly miss her.

The Sangamon County Fair grounds was a buzz this weekend with all the fair events including "Trace Adkins" on Friday evening and "Joe Nichols" on Sat. evening with record crowds, not to mention the chili cookoff on Sat.
Gene Bergschneider (president) and his Fair board members do an excellent job of hosting this Regional event. They make it very easy to participate in this cookoff.
Cooks can pull right up to their spot at the pavilion and with table and chairs provide, they can set up and tear down very easily.
Temperature were in the upper 80's but with the nice breeze going through the open air pavilion that the contestants were cooking under, it was a very pleasant day. Although a small squall blew through about the time for announcements, everyone stayed dry under the pavilion. This cleared in about 10 minutes and all was back to normal as we began the awards.
With the able assistance of "Head Scorekeeper," Clarence Smith, everything went very smoothly.
Wranglers Scott Barrett and Jean Simmons kept the Judges and Judging area in complete order.............Thanks to All!

With Les Eastep's salsa win, he has now completed his "Hat Trick."
This is Mark Hurt's second time to qualify for the WCCC. Mark says he doesn't just cook to win. He cooks because he enjoys it and most importantly because of all the friends he has made over the years......Mark has been cooking in the ICS for 26 years. Talk about perseverance! He was very, very happy.

Here are the results of the ND State. This is blowing your way by a West wind that blew over 40 miles and hour straight winds. We had sand, gravel and cottonwood tree cotten blowing in our chili , but being the die hard chili cooks we are we battened down the hatches and stuck it out.
With the help of a lot of hot air and numerous sensuous body motions Mary Ann Smith won 1st. place in Shoot N Holler.
