WORDS OF WISDOM

By JR Knutson

On his 93rd Birthday

When getting dressed to look your best

You know your getting old

When you can find the button

But can't find the button hole.

Delaware Valley Regional Chili Cookoff

April 26 , 2008

Beer means new home for Chili Cook-Off

Chili aficionados and food lovers alike will once again flock to Gloucester County in April for the Delaware Valley International Chili Society Cook-Off and Festival, but they'll see a bigger event at a much different venue.

The day-long event in its third year and one of the largest in the country will be held at Gloucester County College in Deptford Township. It had previously been held at the Gloucester County 4-H Fairgrounds in Harrison Township.

Event coordinator Rhone Carr, president of the Gloucester County Chamber of Commerce, said the change of venue was due to the fact that beer will be available.

"We wanted to have the opportunity to sell beer at the event, because beer and chili go together," Carr said. "The 4-H board of directors made a decision regarding it being a youth fairgrounds, so alcohol or beer was not appropriate."

Carr said it was "too bad we had to move," but the chamber will include the county 4-H organization as one of the five recipients of some of the profits.

"We will continue to support the (4-H)," Carr said.

In order to sell beer at the event, a one-day, non-profit vendor permit must be secured from the state Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control. Carr said he's already made an application for the permit through Deptford Township.

"I contacted the ABC office and they said the permit should be in our hands sometime (this) week," he said.

The application must also be submitted to the college president, according to GCC spokeswoman Gina Redrow.

As a general rule, GCC does not store or serve alcoholic beverages on campus. But "for special events, it is acceptable," Redrow said.

In fact, Redrow said, the school hosted the College Foundation's first Wine and Chocolate Tasting event this past October.

"We had a wonderful turnout for that," Redrow said.

Carr said that while beer will be available to those of appropriate age, it will be "in an area that's controlled."

"We do want to serve beer, but we want to make sure everyone knows this is a family festival," he said.

Along with the additional beverage options, the festival will include a country music concert this year, Carr said. The festival has partnered with 92.5 WXTU, Philadelphia's country station, to do so.

"We're happy to report that we're in the final stages of signing a contract with Sara Evans, who is one of the hottest female country stars today," Carr said. "And there are additional country stars we're negotiating with right now."

Set for April 26 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., the festival will also have a petting zoo, pony rides, balloon bounces, a car show, a wing-eating contest, and a motorcycle show.

More than 24,000 people attended last year's festival, and Carr said he's hoping to see even more this year.

"We've got people coming from all over the country," Carr said.

"Our regional chili cook-off is one of the largest in the United States," he added. "It's big, probably 80 to 100 cooks. So it's a big event. We've got big plans for this year."
