Route 66 Regional - Paul Whitney
The first leg of the Northern Arizona Back to Backs started on Friday night, June 16th at the Salsa Brava restaurant on Route 66 in Flagstaff, Arizona. Almost all the cooks who were in town early in the evening came on down to the cooks dinner party and enjoyed the food of one of the event sponsors and each others company. Then on Saturday morning, everyone got down to cases. After all the cooks got set up and we could take a final count, we found we had 23 reds, 17 verdes and 16 salsas ready to go for the 23rd Annual Route 66 Regional Chili Cook-off. They represented nine states, a new record for us, in alphabetical order, Arizona, California, Colorado, Illinois, Massachusetts, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico and Texas! We had a perfect day, temps in the low 80's and sailed through the health dept. and fire marshal inspections. A great crowd came out, Miss Arizona came up from Tucson to judge, along with our usual Flagstaff judges and the intrepid crew from Lake Havasu City. After everyone caught a glimpse of the great raffle prizes we had donated by various Flagstaff businesses and artist Roberta Rogers, those in attendance who won were Kay Rook, the large Chili Cabinet, Linda Wilkison won the Chili glassware and snack set and Karen Ray won the chili soap. The other prizes were won by those who bought tickets earlier in the season at other cookoffs. Directions to day two of the Northern Arizona Back to Backs were passed out to all the cooks headed to Payson for the 35 Annual Arizona State Championship Chili Cook-off. When all the chili was passed out to the crowd and the judging results came in, it was a banner day for one family from Colorado. Steve Tomasek just edged Lynn Kost-Virant of Nebraska in a tie-breaker for the Salsa crown and ran away with the Verde to get his 2006 hat trick. Wife Bonnie won a very tight battle to claim the Red Chili, edging out first time cook Mary Rigby of Colorado by a point and getting her hat trick in the process. Third place in Salsa was Jinny Kost of Arizona. 2nd in Verde was Skip Cooley of Nevada and third was Bonnie Ford of California. In red chili, 3rd went to Kay Rook of Colorado, 4th to Skip Cooley and 5th to Don Hammes of California. Thank you from all of us here in Flagstaff to all you cooks who came for the cook-off. Your travelling here for the event means a lot to us. Hope you all had a safe trip home and we look forward to having you here next year for the Northern Arizona Back to Backs, The Route 66 Regional and the Arizona State Championship!
