The day began at the Del Mar horserace track with lightly overcast skies, mild temperatures and no wind. Eventually the overcast burned off and the temperatures increased, but the wind did not put in an appearance. We could not have asked for a nicer day for a chili cookoff at the horse races.

This is probably the best-organized cookoff on the Southern California circuit. The reason is that the Board of Directors of this Nonprofit Organization are all also active participants in putting together the event. Chairman, Claude Covington, mans the helm, pulling all of the pieces together all year long. Steve and Aggie Wright oversee the setup of the judging tables for each contest. This year they were enthusiastically assisted by Gene and Claudia Wheat. Red and Sachiko Brecke are the "caterers", providing a nice lunch spread for all of the judges and workers. The highlight of this spread are Sachiko's wonderful handmade sushi rolls. Ann Greenway is the Secretary-Treasurer of the committee. She ably looks after the finances for the cookoff, making certain that everyone pays and that the prize checks are correctly distributed. The recent loss of her husband, Lee, has necessitated her retirement from this position. She will be sadly missed. Mike Stewart is irreplaceable as a general helper, gofer, doer and supervisor. Whatever needs doing is taken care of by Mike. Kathy Stewart does a superb job as Scorekeeper for the cookoff. Dennis Macklin organizes the layout of the cookoff, showing cooks to their booth spots and helping them set up if needed. He attends to the cooks' needs all day long. Allene Macklin assists Dennis and will be taking over the position of Secretary-Treasurer upon Ann's retirement. Mike Austin continues to officiate as the Chief Judge of the event. New committee members this year are Bill and Karen Ray. Although Lee Greenway can never be replaced, Bill has assumed his position as Greeter/Security Person in the judging area. Karen has been designated the Assistant Scorekeeper.

Cooks arrived from Arizona, Idaho, Nevada and Washington to complement the turnout of contestants from California. In the judging area we were honored to welcome Dave and Carol Hancock, Fred and Leah Wieland and Dave and Kathy Hipskind in particular, along with a multitude of other judges. Cooks and judges alike enjoyed betting on the horse races. Some won, some lost---Oh, well!

Deep Creek Chili Splash at Wisp Resort
FIRST EVER DEEP CREEK CHILI SPLASH
Deep Creek Lake, MD – The heat of summer and a splash of Deep Creek come together for the first ever Deep Creek Chili Splash on August 19 from 11:00 am to 5:00pm at Wisp Resort in the Mountains of Western Maryland. This International Chili Society sanctioned cookoff offers cooks three different categories to compete in – Salsa, Chili Verde (Green Chili) and traditional Red Chili. Cooks from all over the eastern United Stated will be vying for $3000 in cash prizes and the opportunity to represent Wisp Resort at the World’s Championship Chili Cookoff in Omaha, Nebraska this fall. As many as 30 cooks are expected to compete in the regional event.

The public will have an opportunity to vote in the People’s Choice Chili competition giving local residents, businesses and restaurants the chance to showcase their signature chili while raising funds for the Garrett County Dove Center. “The Dove Center seeks to empower victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, to develop a sense of self-worth and to take control of their lives, and to promote and foster public awareness of these issues,” stated Heather Hanline, Executive Director. Sampling tickets will be sold for 50 cents each or 3 for $1 to help the Dove Center kickoff their Capital Campaign which will go towards purchasing land and building a new center.

The Deep Creek Chili Splash won’t be all about chili! Bring the entire family to enjoy live music from 11 am to 5 pm by the Half Time String Band from Morgantown, West Virginia and White Noise out of Garrett County, Maryland. The Mountain Top Cruisers will have their historic cars on display. The Hot Pepper Eating Contest at 1 pm is sure to fire up the crowd while a Splash Contest will cool them down at 3 pm. Kids and parents can stay occupied with fun and games put on by the Wisp Outdoors staff.
