STOVES & PLANES

.

Here's a stove story for you:

Today's story from California might be a little scary for those cooks who are traveling by plane to Terlingua, or anywhere else for that matter. Nevertheless, it's best to be prepared.

.

Susan and I have never had a problem taking our stoves on planes when going to cookoffs. Still, we're aware of some stories that have circulated and Jim Stoddard's efforts to help us all. Jim has a help page of documents at: http://alienpilot3.googlepages.com/home . Playing it safe, we left our painted stoves home on our trip last weekend. Instead, we took a pair of brand new stoves we had won at a cookoff two years ago.

.

As we went to check in for our Southwest flight home in San Diego, the agent demanded to know what was in our bags. He then said I would have to take the stoves out to show him. He said we couldn't take them on and I resisted. I had printed off all of the approval documents from Jim's website and attached them to the stoves. I pointed this out.

.

His reaction was to call over a supervisor who dismissed us until I pitched a minor fit. He did stop and read all of the pages and still conditionally refused to allow them on board. He did call his boss at airport operations. The official word in Sacramento was 'no stoves unless they are brand new, unused, and sealed in the manufacturer's box.' There was nothing further to do but leave the stoves for those agents. I hope they enjoy them.
