Louisiana State
Gonzales, LA.
Sat. Aug. 12
After a 6 year absence, the Louisiana State Championship Chili Cookoff is back, thanks to the volunteer efforts of the Gonzales Firefighters Association and their many members, headed up by Chief Leo Graves the Cookoff Chairman.
The goal of the Firefighters Association was to raise funds from the cookoff for new defibrillators and oxygen equipment for the Department.
With sponsorships, food and beverage sales, raffle and other events they have made lots of headway towards this project.
The cookoff was held on the lot of the beautiful Tanger Mall facilities. It was a very warm day with temperatures in the mid 90's. At about half way through the cooking period, a 10 minute rain shower came through and then cleared making for even more humidity. However this did not deter the spirits of the chili cooks. They all kept enjoying the day.
The Gonzales Firefighters Association is already in the process of planning next years cookoff with even more and better events and activities. They are also contemplating the date for next year with a possible middle of March date.
For this year they just had the Red chili contest, but are looking to expand to the other contest next year.
