PASCAGOULA, MS.

The annual Downtown for the Holidays event in Pascagoula will feature horse-drawn carriage rides through the snow followed by a Christmas parade and chili cook-off the next day.

From 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Dec. 7, visitors to the areas around Delmas Avenue can enjoy rides by carriage or firetruck, entertainment and shopping, said Main Street promoter Rebecca Davis. A children's venue with giant inflatable activities will be set up in the vacant lot behind the old Gryder's shoe store.

.

Merchants will remain open late and several restaurants in the area will feature dinner specials for the event.

.

Specialty vendors will line Delmas Avenue to sell handmade merchandise such as jewelry, sculptures, paintings and gourmet gift items.

.

Santa and his elves will be featured at Merchants & Marine Bank. A snow machine there will provide hours of frosty fun for children, Davis said.

.

Magnolia Cruisers have cars on display nearby and Christ Lutheran Church will feature a live walk-through nativity.

.

Davis hopes the family event will be an annual part of everyone's Christmas activities. "We started a tradition seven years ago with Downtown for the Holidays and it gets bigger every year," she said. "I get the warm fuzzies when I see people I haven't seen in forever. You're fellowshipping and you're hugging necks. It's better than a family reunion."

.

The Pascagoula Christmas parade begins at 10 a.m. Dec. 8. Sponsored by Pascagoula Kiwanis, the parade will travel along Market Street, Jackson Avenue and Pascagoula Street.

.

Near the parade route, in the parking lot of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, the first-ever South Mississippi Regional Championship Chili Cook-off will feature entertainment, chili judging and samplings from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

.

Winners of the contest sanctioned by the International Chili Society advance to the 2008 World Championship Chili Cook-off in Omaha, Neb., which features a $25,000 top prize.

.

Special guests at the event are 2007 world champion Jerry Buma and Florida state champion Bob Hall, who will serve as chief judge of the event.
