Whittier CA District

The weather in Whittier was great this weekend. Cool in the morning, beautiful during the day and cooled off Saturday nite. The chairman, from the Whittier Historical Society was MIA (bad back and heavily medicated), so Chief Judge Don Hammes had several anxious moments with the replacements after arriving on site around 6am. By the time everything got started everything was running smoothly. Then the Health Department showed up in time for Salsa turn-in. Jim Maehl took over the salsa judges meeting so Don could handle the Health Department. Scorekeepers were Donnie, Edi Gumfudgin and Jim Maehl (as his normal scorekeeper, I feel every Chief Judge should be familiar with the complete scoring process and he agreed. This weekend was a perfect opportunity... and he did well). And the winners:

.

People's Choice - Russell Barns

.

Salsa (7 Entries)

3rd Place - Bob Plager

2nd Place - Judy Barns

1st Place - Chris Nicoll

.

Chili Verde (7 Entries)

3rd Place - Allene Macklin

2nd Place - Bob Dyer

1st Place - Russ Barns

.

Red Chili (20 Entries)

5th Place - Trudy Baker-Reed

4th Place - Ron Burt

3rd Place - Armando Sanchez

2nd Place - Red Brecke

1st Place - Bob Plager

.

As is custom for those people staying at the Hammes Inn, anyone winning $ buys pizza for dinner. Plager did and we all enjoyed it. Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to all the volunteers. Great weekend was had by all.

March into Spring Regional

The March into Spring Regional Chili Cookoff in Mt. Airy Maryland welcomed the spring in hot fashion. The Mt. Airy Main Street Association did a fantastic job of getting the word out to the public and the cooks were busy all day giving out samples of chili. There was a Beer Garden and a group handing out vegan chili as well as Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops selling items and helping out everywhere they could. Best of all, the weather held out after a fierce storm the night before. Many thanks to Barbara Corbalis the chairperson and to Ellie for letting us use her Flower shop.

Lompoc in April can produce any kind of weather. This year we got cold and windy Saturday, but it didn't stop the 10 Red and Verde cooks or the 8 Salsa contestants. Nor did it stop the people of Lompoc from coming out to support the Spring Festival at Ryan's Park. I do think a great time was had by all.
