BAKERSFIELD CA DISTRICT

What a pleasant weekend. When you're halfway between North & South (Hence people from both areas) and have hosts like Jim & Eileen Beaty how could it not be? It began Friday with a gathering at the Beaty's. Lots of great food and "Old Timers" with lots of laughs and tales of old times. The weather was ideal. As Jim said judging was really tough (he marked 13 bowls to go back to) as it was a perfect chili weather. It was the first year so there was not much public and we all worried about that as the Optimist Club was beyond agreeable and eager to make it work. They didn't appear as disappointed as we were for them and are looking forward to next year. They are even talked to Susie & Phil to make sure there was no conflict on the dates for next year. Jim Beaty is an awesome Chief Judge and for scorekeepers he had Donnie, Bobbie Gaul and Pat Morosky. The band did not interfer with the calling of scores and the checks were written before we were ready to announce. After the cookoff it was back to Beaty's for more food & socializing. An auspicious beginning to what should turn out to be a favorite for all of us in the future. And the winners are:

.

Salsa (17 Entries)

3rd Place - Karen Angotti

2nd Place - Susie Decker

1st Place - Mary Nicoll

4th Place - Armando Sanchez

3rd Place - Irene Menchaca

Congratulations to all the winners and thank you Jim & Eileen for a wonderful weekend! I think we'll all be back.

Bill "GUMBY" Donavan Update

Since being released from impatient at Jewish Hospital Gumby has survived an additional two rounds of outpatient chemo with another two rounds to go. Each round takes about a month and a half to complete and after each round they take a bone marrow biopsy to see if his marrow is "clean". We are in the middle of a round so the next biopsy will be in a couple of weeks. We are on the scariest roller coaster imaginable. If our prayers are answered and all goes well and all biopsy's remain "clean" we will be well into August before we know if the one hundred and eleven hours of poison/chemo that has been put into Gumby's body will bring forth a remission. We pray that God will heal him completely with this course of treatment and he will not need a transplant. Needless to say it has been rough...and too many issues to mention...it is hard for us to understand and we are living it...

Our daily Monday through Sunday trips to Jewish Hospital Bone Marrow Unit are tiring...A short day is three hours and a long day for blood and platelet transfusions can take up to eight hours...The remainder of our day is spent on the phone with the insurance company and or the hospital trying to figure out the mounting and confusing bills. We don't get much of anything else accomplished but at least recently we have been able to take short walks in the neighborhood which seem to help us keep some sanity in our lives. We cherish the small stuff...and are trying to roll with the punches...but the shock has still not worn off.

Besides the obvious fears, isolation and depression has become major emotional issues. There are only a few days per month that his immune system will allow him to carefully venture outside of the strict doctor imposed guidelines. We are still not sure how to manage this...There are times that he does like to talk on the phone and other times that he would rather not...But please don't stop calling! 941-9711 He is so grateful for the support of his fellow firefighters, family and friends and I can't tell you how much you have always meant to him, especially now. Thanks to everyone who has donated blood and platelets. It is the most precious gift you can give.

Thanks again for the love and support for both of us.

Gumby's wife, Gail

Maria Austin's health update 3-29-08

To all our Chili Friends and Fam-Lee

Sorry for the late update on Maria, but she has had some setbacks and rough times these last two weeks. Just left Maria at 10:30 pm this evening and she is starting to make some progress. Myself and one of the Physical Therapists "Viola" have been giving Maria her much needed therapy. Viola is an Angel, she is not afraid to jump in and help Maria to get started with her much needed PT. We had to get started some where, and we made it happen. Maria is not real strong yet, but it's a start. She is being weaned off off the ventilator, in fact she has been breathing on her own the last 2 days. She still has the trech in her neck. We may be moving her to a more advanced physical theropy hospital, to teach her to eat, speak, and walk. The Doctors are looking at 6 weeks there, and then home with Ughlee for the finishing touches. The Doctors told me she is in the condition known as ICU Psychosis, it's where people who have been in the CCU and ICU depts. for long periods of times. On high powered drugs. The patient looses track of, day and night, and most everything around them. They claim most people will turn this condition around when moved to a different environment, where they turn out the lights at night and work out during the daytime hours. We'll see. I pray this works.

Please keep the Prayers and Good Thoughts coming, they really do work.

Love You All

Mike and Fam-Lee

AVI BACK to BACKS

April 4 – 5 , 2008

It's time again for the Springtime back-to-back Regionals at the Avi Casino in Laughlin! Call 1-800-AVI-2WIN and ask for "Chili 08" to get the cooks' (and judges/scorekeepers/spoon jockey) roomrate. We already have plenty signed up for salsa and verde, so these WILL be qualifiers. It also looks like we will maintain our Regional status in red for next year, as well. If you haven't already signed up, please go to http://www.chilicookoff.com/ and sign up, or e-mail me at susanbaumberger@yahoo.com so we can get a head count. Goodie bags will go to those who signed up online FIRST, and the late-comers will get whatever's left.

.

Cooks -- The Sunday cookoff will likely be held one hour earlier (to be determined by a vote of the cooks on Saturday) so that everyone can hit the road one hour earlier after awards are announced.

.

The weather is expected to be in the low 80's and partly cloudy, no wind in the prediction. Therefore, it looks like it will be a BEAUTIFUL weekend! Cooks will be able to set up as early as Friday (by then, the precise location will have been determined).

.

Congratulations to the Beatys on their very, very successful Bakersfield District, which will now be a Regional! I highly recommend this cook-off to anyone that did not attend this year. Great weather, cooking on the lawn, and a blend of "Northern" and "Southern" cooks. We had a few old timers (like from the 80's!) show up asking for some of you! Don't miss this one next year!
