WEDNESDAY - Apr 29, 2009

CARSON VALLEY INN B2B

I had Wind and some rain on the way up to Minden, folks coming from the surrounding areas had Wind & Snow! Saturday morning the mountains were beautifully covered with snow. As the morning went on the sun came out and it was a beautiful day with a repeat on Sunday. Fritz Rubins (who had escaped from the hospital to make sure his event ran smoothly) did a remarkable job (as usual) considering his health issues. David & Kathy Hipskind (Chief Judge & Scorekeeper) did a great job and are always a pleasure to work with. The Sertoma girls that Wrangle (I got in trouble for bragging on how good they are last year) did such a great job that David invited them to come up and help. And the winners:

Buckeye Reg. & Ohio State

Port Clinton, OH.

April 25 & 26

.

This was the 14th year for Ken and Diane Kostal to host the ICS Sanctioned Chili Cookoffs in Port Clinton, Oh. And, what a GREAT job they do in putting this event together.

The Buckeye Regional is held on Saturday and the Ohio State Championship is held on Sunday at the same location.

Friday afternoon is the arrival of most cooks and judges to the Holiday Inn Express in Port Clinton right on the banks of Lake Erie. Kim Bartish (General Manger) of the hotel really takes care of the chili cooks and judges with very special room rates and exceptional service by all of her staff at this fine facility.

Friday evening several of the cooks go next door to the hotel to the Nagoya Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar for an evening of fun, food, and spirits.

After the cookoff on Saturday everyone heads back to the Holiday Inn Express were Kim has given the banquet room to Ken and Diane for another evening of fun, food, and spirits. (Yes, we like to party!)

Diane has the room decorated in an appropriate chili decor and as always, Ken furnishes all the fine food for the evening. This years menu was Fresh Lake Perch and Barbecue Ribs along with all the other trimmings, appetizers, and deserts, etc., all prepared at Ken and Diane's "Big Boppers Restaurant."

Sunday morning everyone is back to the cookoff site for another day of very competitive competition cooking. And, to say the least, this was very competitive i.e., Nine World Champions as well as many Grand Master and Master Cooks.

The Charity of choice was again the Salvation Army's "Tools for Schools" program. This is a program for beginning youth students for obtaining school supplies (books, paper, pencils, etc.) as those less fortunate children beginning their school year. Cheryl Wieber heads up this program and does an excellent job with this.

Cheryl has reported that the cookoff has raised about $2,000 from this years event. VERY GOOD !

Acreage Music & Chili Fest

This note is to provide my thoughts and comments concerning the South Florida Back-to-Back Regional AMC&F that was held on April 25th and 26th at the Acreage Community Park in Royal Palm Beach, Florida.

.

Although the location was a bit remote, the facility, organization, side events, entertainment, and food vendors were wonderful. The arrangements for the chili cookoff, for the cooks, judging and the prompt announcement of the competition results were all very well planned. Both the events were well attended by the public.

.

AND last but not least, the cooks party held on Friday evening at "Uncle Mick's" was on of the best that I have attended in over twenty years of cooking in the "Chili World".

.

Sincerely,

Richard (Chilidick) Steinert
