Sacramento Regional Chili Cookoff May 16, 2009

.

What a day! The sun was shining, light breeze and the smell of chili cooking was in the air. What more could you ask for? How about a great chili cookoff? The beer garden, the kids area, the pony rides, the food, the pancake breakfast, dancing girls, a DJ that played great music all day and two ex World Champions, Margo and JR Knudson.

A big thank you to all the judges for giving up part of their day to judge all the chili's. Sacramento City Council member Steve Cohn judged the ICS red and was very impressed. How about that! Skip and Dione Cooley they came all the way from Reno, NV, and Steve and Lynn Boldenweck came all the way from San Francisco, CA to help in the judging area. Thank you guys very much. David Hipskind was the Chief Judge for the day. Thank you David.

The Kiwanis Club of East Sacramento-Midtown hosted this event. We started working on the event in November. It was great to see all the hard work turn into a successful event. Thank you, to all the Cookoff Chairman for all your hard work. One more .............. Thank You to all the chili cooks, without you we couldn't do this.

OK now the winners.

Tustin Regional Chili Cookoff

.

We are getting very close to the June 7th date for the Tustin Chili Cookoff. As many of you know, Bill and I were Chief Judge and Chief Scorekeeper of this event last year and will be again on June 7th. This is a good cookoff. Yes, they have a huge public, wanting to taste chili. So do lots of other cookoffs. There is no monetary entry fee, so they can only "require" that you bring two gallons of People's Choice chili as your entry fee. They humbly ask that you bring whatever you think is fair to provide chili for the public to taste. They have many local teams who provide gallons and gallons of chili for the public, and these teams are rewarded with the "bragging rights" of becoming the annual People's Choice Champion.

.

We cooked in this cookoff once. We would probably have cooked a second time, but we were drafted to help them in a different capacity. We were able to park close to our cooking space (we arrived early), we handed out a reasonable amout of People's Choice Chili (5 or 6 gallons, I think), and finished third in the cookoff. Many people you know have won this cookoff or placed. Ask Dennis Macklin or Boris Kiena how they like the event! Ask last year's winner, Darlene Taylor! It is a very well-organized event worthy of your attention.

.

This is their 25th Anniversary cookoff. They would like to have a good showing of "regular" ICS cooks to help them celebrate the occasion. Please come out and help us (and the City of Tustin) make this the great cookoff that it deserves to be. To help celebrate their Anniversary, they have added prize money for the ICS portion of the cookoff---$500 for 1st Place, $300 for 2nd and $200 for 3rd!

.

If you have already qualified for the World's Championship and can not cook, please come and help us judge. "Celebrity" judges will be limited this year, so we need your help. As a judge you will receive good food and a nice "Thank You" gift from the organizers. The tote bag that contains the gift is very unique and worth your time!

.

If you want to cook, please sign up on the ICS web site, or contact the folks listed there. They will make every effort to accomodate your needs regarding arrival times, cooking space, etc. If you have already qualified for the World's Championship (congratulations!) please come out and help with the judging. If you can judge, please RSVP to Chiliray94@sbcglobal.net, so we can be sure that there are plenty of "goodies" available for you.

.

Remember Inland Empire Regional on May 23rd, then we'll hope to see you on June 7th. Thanks for all of your support.
